Use Chrome DevTools’ Capture a full size screenshot command to save the entire Google results page, including content below the visible screen. Set a repeatable viewport first if needed, then record the query, capture time, location or locale, and device conditions alongside the image. A screenshot is a dated observation of one search, not a universal record of Google results.
Capture the full Google results page in Chrome
- In Chrome, open Google and run the exact query you want to document.
- If the audit calls for a controlled screen size, open Chrome DevTools and turn on Device Mode. Choose a device or configure a custom viewport; Chrome’s Device Mode documentation describes the viewport selector and custom-device width and height settings. See Chrome DevTools Device Mode.
- In DevTools, open the More options menu and select Capture a full size screenshot. Do not choose Capture screenshot if you need the content below the current viewport: that command captures only what is currently visible. Chrome describes the full-size command as capturing the whole page, including content not currently visible in the viewport.
- Save the image with a descriptive filename, such as
google-serp-running-shoes-seattle-mobile-2026-10-04.png. - Open the saved image and check for overlays, truncation, or results that appeared after the capture. If the page was still rendering, wait for it to settle and capture again; note any change in the audit record.
Record the conditions that make the screenshot useful
A full-page image shows what appeared in that capture, but does not explain why those results appeared. Keep a short record next to each image so another person can interpret or repeat it. Chrome’s screenshot instructions cover the capture controls; the metadata below is practical audit recordkeeping, not a format prescribed by Chrome.
- Query: Preserve the exact wording, including punctuation where relevant.
- Date and time: Include the time zone.
- Location or locale: State the location or language/region setting used, if known.
- Device and viewport: Note desktop or mobile, the selected device if any, and custom viewport dimensions.
- Search context: Note relevant account or personalization state and any unusual page conditions.
- Visible SERP features: Identify notable modules, such as local results, image results, or other prominent features, when they matter to the comparison.
When comparing captures, keep query intent and wording, location or locale, viewport, and capture timing as similar as possible. If a condition differs, label the difference instead of treating the images as a controlled comparison.
Do not confuse a Google SERP screenshot with Search Console’s rendered-page view
Google Search Console’s URL Inspection tool is for examining a URL on your own site, not saving the Google results page for a query. In a successful live test, View tested page can show a screenshot of the page retrieved and rendered by Google, along with response and resource information. Google also notes that a positive live-test eligibility result does not guarantee that the URL appears in Search results. Optional alternative: a full-page capture extension
Chrome’s built-in DevTools command is sufficient for this workflow; an extension is not required. GoFullPage is an optional alternative listed in the Chrome Web Store. Its listing changelog says version 7.8, dated 2023-03-31, included capture improvements involving Google search. That dated listing does not establish that it is necessary or better than DevTools. Publishing and permissions
If you plan to publish a screenshot, review Google’s current Search Guidelines. Google says users are responsible for obtaining appropriate approval from third-party content owners for content shown in Search screenshots, such as material appearing in image results. Its guidance says Google permission is not required for print use in educational or instructional materials, while distinguishing that from advertisements and promotional materials. Google also requests this trademark notice beneath images featuring Google Search: “Google and the Google logo are trademarks of Google LLC.” Check that your planned use fits the guidance and obtain any relevant third-party rights.
