After each action, wait for the matching network response or a visible results change; stop only when the app gives a completion signal, and validate what you collected. A scroll command alone does not prove that another batch loaded.
Why infinite-scroll capture needs more than scrolling
Many apps load another batch when a user scrolls, often through a Fetch or XHR request. The request may use a page number, offset, cursor, or search request body; there is no universal pagination format. Playwright can both interact with page elements and monitor network traffic, including these requests (Playwright Network documentation).
Filters are part of the query, not just a visual setting. Applying one may replace results, reset pagination, or start a new request. Treat a cursor from the previous filter state as stale unless inspection shows otherwise. Keep each filter combination and its batches distinct, then deduplicate according to the app’s record semantics.
Inspect the app before automating it
- Find the results view and scroller. Determine whether the document scrolls or whether results sit inside a separately scrollable panel. Note the filter controls and whether changing a filter updates the URL.
- Open browser developer tools and filter Network to Fetch/XHR. Apply one filter and inspect the request method, URL, parameters or body, and response shape. Note any pagination fields, such as a next cursor, has-more flag, or total count, if present.
- Trigger one scroll load and compare. Check what request changes and whether the response adds records or changes a token. Do not assume a tutorial’s example fields exist in your target app.
- Record the required context. Real requests may depend on an authenticated session, headers, cookies, or a POST body. Do not put credentials in shared logs or source control.
The Playwright Page documentation covers element interaction, scrolling, response waits, and readiness checks. An element action can bring a target into view, including one inside a nested scroll container.

Automate filter and scroll actions with Playwright
Below is a runnable Node.js pattern. Install Playwright with npm install playwright; install a browser if your setup requires it with npx playwright install chromium. Replace the example URL, filter locator, result locator, and response matcher with selectors and request details observed in your app. The example assumes selecting a filter causes a request whose URL contains search, and that each result has a data-record-id attribute. Those are placeholders for app-specific values, not universal conventions.
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const page = await browser.newPage();
try {
await page.goto('https://example.com/results', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
// Replace with the actual filter control and selected value.
const filterRequest = page.waitForResponse(response =>
response.url().includes('/search') && response.request().method() === 'GET'
);
await page.getByLabel('Category').selectOption('books');
await filterRequest;
const results = page.locator('[data-record-id]');
await results.first().waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
const records = new Map();
let unchangedRounds = 0;
for (let batch = 0; batch < 1000; batch++) {
const before = await results.count();
const current = await results.evaluateAll(nodes => nodes.map(node => ({
id: node.getAttribute('data-record-id'),
text: node.innerText
})));
for (const record of current) {
if (record.id) records.set(record.id, record);
}
// Replace with the real pagination request matcher if you have identified one.
const nextBatch = page.waitForResponse(response =>
response.url().includes('/search') && response.request().method() === 'GET',
{ timeout: 15000 }
).catch(() => null);
// Scroll the actual feed/container when it is not the whole document.
await results.last().scrollIntoViewIfNeeded();
await page.mouse.wheel(0, 900);
const response = await nextBatch;
const after = await results.count();
if (!response && after === before) unchangedRounds++;
else unchangedRounds = 0;
// Use the app's real end marker or pagination metadata when available.
if (await page.getByText('No more results', { exact: true }).count()) break;
if (unchangedRounds >= 2) {
throw new Error('No completion signal or new results detected; verify the scroller and request matcher.');
}
}
console.log(JSON.stringify([...records.values()], null, 2));
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
The loop is deliberately bounded. Adapt its completion logic to the app’s actual end marker or pagination metadata rather than treating the sample text, URL substring, attribute, or maximum batch count as universal. If the app exposes a stable response with a next cursor, parsing that response’s completion field is generally stronger than inferring completion from DOM size.

Choose a reliable wait for each action
Register a response wait before clicking a filter or triggering a load when you know the request to expect; otherwise a fast response can arrive before the wait begins. If no useful request is exposed, wait for a specific locator change, such as a new result ID or updated result count. Use a bounded timeout so a stalled request becomes a visible failure rather than a silently skipped batch.
Playwright explicitly discourages networkidle as a generic readiness check and says: “Don’t use this method for testing, rely on web assertions to assess readiness instead.” A fixed sleep can also race with slow networks or rendering; use an action-specific response or observable page state instead (Playwright Page documentation).

Extract, deduplicate, and validate the records
- Prefer structured response data when suitable. Capturing a response can preserve fields more directly than scraping rendered text, but apps do not all expose a useful or parseable response. DOM extraction remains useful when the UI is the only accessible source.
- Use a stable identifier. Deduplicate by the app’s record ID when available. If not, define a composite key from fields that are stable for the target data and document that identical-looking records may be merged or duplicates may remain.
- Keep provenance with each batch. Save the filter values and page, offset, or cursor used for every batch. This helps diagnose gaps and resume a capture without mixing results from different queries.
- Check completion and samples. Prefer server pagination metadata or a visible end-of-results marker. Compare captured counts and representative records with the UI for each filter state.
Page height stopping once is not reliable proof of completion: requests can be delayed, results may be virtualized, and the wrong nested container may have been scrolled. If the app exposes no trustworthy end signal, report that completeness is uncertain rather than claiming every result was captured.
When direct request replay is an option
After discovering a request in the browser, you can test replaying it separately—for example, by copying it as cURL in developer tools. This may be simpler for structured batches, but preserve the method, query or body, relevant headers, and session context. A replayed request may not reproduce app-side behavior, and undocumented request formats can change. Start with browser automation to learn the UI’s real behavior; use replay only when the captured request works and its access is authorized.

Troubleshooting common capture failures
- The page scrolls but no batch arrives: confirm you scrolled the feed’s actual container, not an outer page, and inspect whether a request was sent. Scroll the last result into view or target the nested container.
- The script misses a response: register the response wait before the action and match the real URL, method, and, where needed, request body. A broad matcher may catch an unrelated request; an overly strict one may never match.
- The filter changes visually but results are wrong: wait for the filter-triggered request or a changed result state, then confirm that the response corresponds to the selected values. Check whether old results remain temporarily visible.
- The same records appear repeatedly: inspect whether the app appends overlapping batches and deduplicate on a stable ID. Do not assume each visible occurrence is a distinct record.
- The capture ends too early: do not rely on unchanged page height or one unchanged result count. Check for delayed loading, virtualization, a nested scroller, and a real completion marker or pagination field.
- The request works in the browser but fails when replayed: it may need session cookies, authorization, headers, or a POST body. Keep credentials private and prefer the browser flow if replay cannot safely preserve the required context.
- The app blocks or rate-limits collection: respect its access controls and usage limits. Log failures and response changes; do not treat a partial capture as complete.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A screenshot captures a rendered view, not every record in a paginated feed, so it is not a substitute for structured extraction when your goal is a complete dataset. For a visual snapshot of a page or a rendered state, one GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can infinite-scroll capture guarantee every result?
Only when the app exposes a trustworthy completion signal and the capture validates the result batches; without one, completeness remains uncertain.
Should I use Playwright or copy the app’s request?
Use Playwright first to discover and reproduce the app’s actual filter and scrolling behavior. Replay a request only after confirming its method, payload, session requirements, and response behavior.
