Record the query, search engine, market, device or viewport, timestamp, result URL and final URL after redirects. Those details make later comparisons interpretable; a landing-page screenshot by itself does not show where or how the page ranked.
What to capture—and why both screenshots matter
A SERP image documents what appeared in search for a particular query and context: visible result positions, titles, URLs, and features such as ads or other search elements. A landing-page image documents what a visitor sees after opening a result. Keep them together, since neither image establishes the other.
- SERP screenshot: preserves the visible result and its position in the captured search page.
- Landing-page viewport screenshot: records the initial view at a specified browser size.
- Full-page screenshot: includes the page below the fold and is useful when the page’s complete structure matters.
Playwright’s documentation describes screenshots of a viewport, an element, or a full scrollable page. Playwright screenshot documentation and the Page API describe navigation and screenshot options; the Python documentation covers viewport, full-page, element, and buffer capture.
Build a repeatable capture record
Before searching, decide the context you want to compare and write it down. Search results can vary when these inputs change, so use the same settings when repeating a capture.

- Exact search query
- Search engine
- Date and time
- Target market or location
- Device and viewport dimensions
- Browser state, including whether you are logged in and what consent choice you made
- Capture mode: viewport or full page
For every result, record the visible title and URL, then the final destination URL after redirects. Save the SERP image and the landing-page image with that metadata. If you compare pages visually, keep the viewport and capture mode consistent.
Manual workflow for a short list of competitors
- Search with a defined context. Use the query, engine, market, and device you intend to compare. Note the date and time.
- Capture the SERP before leaving it. Save an image that shows the relevant results and visible rank. If the page is longer than the visible window, capture enough of it to include the result you are documenting.
- Record the result identity. Note its displayed title and URL, plus any visible result type or SERP feature relevant to your comparison.
- Open the result and note the final URL. Redirects can lead to a destination different from the address displayed in the result. Keep both addresses in the record.
- Capture the landing page. Save a viewport screenshot for the visitor’s initial view. Add a full-page image if below-the-fold content or page structure matters.
- Pair the evidence. Store the SERP image, landing-page image, URLs, and capture context together. Repeat later using the same settings for a dated comparison.
Automate landing-page captures with Playwright
Playwright is useful when you have a list of destination URLs and want repeatable browser-based screenshots. The example below uses its Node.js API to open one page and save both viewport and full-page images. Install Playwright and its browser before running it; the SERP still needs to be captured and associated with the landing-page result separately.

}Replace the example URL with the final destination you recorded from the SERP. Use a distinct output filename for each competitor and capture context rather than overwriting prior evidence. Navigation can fail or time out on sites that require interaction or continue making network requests; when that happens, inspect the page and choose an appropriate wait condition rather than assuming the image represents a fully loaded page.
Playwright also supports screenshots of a selected element, which can help when comparing a specific part of a landing page rather than the whole document. Name and organize captures so comparisons stay useful
Use a consistent filename that identifies the project or query, competitor, engine, market, viewport, date, and capture mode. For example:

Retain separate SERP and page images: the page image does not prove that a result appeared at a particular rank.

Choose a capture method for the job
- Manual browser capture: simplest for a short list where you can inspect each SERP and destination yourself.
- Playwright: a fit for repeatable URL-based page captures, controlled viewport settings, and viewport, element, or full-page screenshots.
- SERPshot: a Chrome Web Store listing describes SERP archiving for Google and Bing, including result parsing and position logging, with bulk queries and metadata export. Those are listing-described capabilities, not an independent evaluation; availability and features can change. View the SERPshot Chrome Web Store listing.
Google Search Console URL Inspection is not a general way to inspect competitors. Google describes it as a tool for inspecting a specific page in the context of a property owner’s Search Console account; its live test can show a screenshot of the page Google retrieved in that workflow. Troubleshooting capture records
- The screenshot seems to show the wrong page: compare the result URL with the final URL after redirects. Store both and capture the destination you actually reached.
- A comparison looks inconsistent: check whether the query, engine, market, viewport, capture time, consent choice, or logged-in state differed. These inputs can change what appears.
- The landing-page image omits relevant content: a viewport capture only documents the initial view. Capture the full page when below-the-fold structure matters.
- Playwright navigation times out: some pages do not reach network idle because requests continue, or may require interaction. Review the page’s behavior and use a wait condition suited to the content you need to capture.
- A page screenshot is being treated as proof of rank: it is not. Preserve the SERP screenshot with the page image and metadata to document the ranking context.
