You can’t use the current Google PageSpeed Insights API v5 method to capture screenshots. It analyzes one URL per request and returns Lighthouse results, not screenshot image files. To audit a list of pages, send one request for each URL and save the results. To create actual screenshots, use a separate browser-capture workflow.
What the PageSpeed Insights API can—and cannot—do
The current method is GET https://pagespeedonline.googleapis.com/pagespeedonline/v5/runPagespeed. Its required url parameter identifies the page to analyze. The method reference does not document a screenshot parameter or image output. Its response contains analysis data, including Lighthouse results, rather than a screenshot file. Older v4 documentation described screenshot-related fields, but that historical behavior is not evidence that the current v5 method supports screenshot capture. Do not add a guessed parameter such as screenshot=true to v5. Google’s historical v4 reference
PageSpeed Insights is useful when you want performance diagnostics for many pages. If your output needs to be PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF images of those pages, run a separate screenshot capture process.

Run PageSpeed Insights on a list of URLs
There is no documented bulk endpoint in the current method. Prepare a list of fully qualified page URLs, then make one runPagespeed request per URL. The following shell example loops through a newline-delimited file named urls.txt; each successful response is saved separately as JSON.
1. Prepare the URL list
Put one complete URL per line in urls.txt, for example:

Google’s getting-started guide recommends an API key for frequent automated queries. The guide reviewed here does not state a numerical quota or batch size. Check the limits that apply to your Google Cloud project rather than assuming a fixed request rate. Google’s PageSpeed Insights API getting-started guide
3. Make one encoded request for each URL
This Bash loop uses curl --get and --data-urlencode, so query strings in a page URL are transmitted as a single url parameter. It writes responses to numbered files and reports failed requests without treating them as valid results.

done < urls.txtFor desktop analysis, change strategy=mobile to strategy=desktop, or remove the parameter: desktop is the documented default. Each URL is still a separate request. Keep the URL-to-file mapping in your own records, particularly if you later parallelize the loop.
4. Add categories when needed
The optional category parameter selects Lighthouse categories. Performance is the default; pass categories explicitly when you need other results. The method accepts category values as query parameters; consult Google’s current method reference for supported values. For example, append --data-urlencode 'category=accessibility' to the cURL command. The optional locale parameter sets the report locale; it does not select the geographic location of the Lighthouse run. Parameter definitions

5. Preserve traceability in your output
For each successful response, retain the requested URL alongside the returned resolved document id, analysisUTCTimestamp, version, requested strategy, and Lighthouse results you use. The returned identifier and timestamp help distinguish analyses when a URL redirects or is analyzed again. Do not assume every response field remains present or unchanged across Lighthouse updates.
What changes between runs, versions, and data sources
The endpoint is API v5, but Lighthouse is versioned independently and is updated over time. Google’s release notes state that PageSpeed Insights and its API moved to Lighthouse 13.0 on October 20, 2025. Store the returned version metadata with reports and make consumers tolerant of changing or missing fields. Google PageSpeed Insights release notes

The documented method offers desktop and mobile strategies, not a geographic test-region selector. Do not interpret the strategy parameter as a location setting.
Google’s getting-started material says real-world CrUX data in the PageSpeed Insights API is planned for discontinuation and recommends the CrUX API or CrUX History API for that data. It does not give an end date in the material reviewed, so treat this as a stated plan, not a completed removal. Google’s getting-started guide
Troubleshooting a bulk run
- The response is Lighthouse JSON, not an image. That is expected: v5’s documented method is an analysis API. Use a separate screenshot-capable browser or service for image output.
- A URL with a query string is analyzed incorrectly. Encode it as one parameter. In the example,
--data-urlencode "url=$page_url"handles ampersands and other reserved characters in the page URL. - The loop stops on a failed request or leaves a partial file. Inspect the HTTP error body and exit status, remove invalid output, and record the failure against the requested URL. Retry only in line with the limits and service guidance applicable to your Google Cloud project; a universal retry interval or quota is not specified here.
- A result appears different from an earlier report. Compare the requested URL, resolved
id, strategy, timestamp, and returned Lighthouse version before comparing metrics. Lighthouse updates independently of API v5. - You need a test from a particular country or region. The documented method does not provide a geography parameter. The mobile and desktop strategies describe analysis modes, not locations.
