To capture many pages at both mobile and desktop widths, script a loop over your URL list and viewport configurations. Set each viewport before navigating, wait for the page state you want to review, then save a screenshot with a filename that identifies the route and width. Playwright provides the browser and screenshot operations; your script supplies the bulk workflow.
Build a repeatable route-and-viewport workflow
- Choose routes: List the pages to capture, using complete URLs where needed. Decide whether you need viewport, full-page, or element images.
- Choose widths: Set explicit CSS viewport dimensions that reflect the breakpoints and review cases that matter for your site. There is no universal mobile-and-desktop pair that covers every design.
- Set viewport before navigation: Create or configure the page at the target size before opening the route. Playwright notes that some sites do not expect a phone-sized viewport to change after a page has loaded. See the Playwright Page API.
- Wait for the review state: Navigate, then wait for a site-specific signal such as a particular element or application state. No single readiness signal is reliable for every site.
- Save deterministic files: Use stable names such as
home-mobile.pngandhome-desktop.png, and keep output in a consistent directory.
The example below is a runnable Node.js script using Playwright. It loops over routes and widths; the loop, route list, readiness selector and filename rules are your code, not a built-in Playwright bulk URL command.

In a new project, install the Playwright package and its browser:

Capture each route at both widths
Save this as capture.mjs, then run node capture.mjs. Replace the example URLs and, if appropriate, the readiness selector with one that represents the settled state of your site.

This example uses viewport screenshots. It checks HTTP response status but does not treat that check as proof that all client-side content is ready; add a meaningful wait for the application state you intend to compare. If the site requires authentication, configure an appropriate authenticated browser context rather than assuming a public page will represent the signed-in experience.
Choose the screenshot extent and output scale
Viewport capture
The default screenshot shows the visible viewport. Use it to compare what a person sees without scrolling at each responsive width. The script sets fullPage: false explicitly.

Full-page capture
Set fullPage: true when you need the entire scrollable page in one tall image. It answers a different question from a viewport shot, so make the distinction clear in filenames or metadata if both are part of the same review. Playwright documents this option in its screenshots guide.
Element capture
For an isolated component, use a locator screenshot rather than capturing the whole page. For example, after the page is ready, await page.locator('header').screenshot({ path: 'screenshots/home-mobile-header.png' }); saves the selected header. Choose a selector that identifies the intended component reliably.
CSS-pixel or device-pixel output
Playwright’s screenshot scale option can produce CSS-pixel output or device-pixel output. CSS scaling gives one image pixel per CSS pixel; device scaling can produce larger images on high-DPI devices. Choose CSS pixels when compact artifacts and CSS-coordinate alignment matter, or device pixels when additional pixel detail matters. Higher-resolution output changes pixel dimensions, so coordinates will not correspond one-to-one with CSS pixels.
Image formats and post-processing
PNG is a sensible default when lossless output is useful. Playwright’s CLI also supports JPEG and WebP. The Page API can return screenshot bytes for image processing or pixel-diff workflows instead of writing directly to a file. Keep format, scale, browser, fonts and page state consistent when comparing runs.

Make batches useful for visual review
Match widths to your responsive decisions
Use viewport widths tied to the breakpoints or layouts you actually need to inspect. A single width labeled “mobile” and one labeled “desktop” are convenient sample points, not complete device coverage. Add more configurations when tablet layouts or breakpoint boundaries are relevant.
Control dynamic content without hiding the test
Animations, rotating banners, timestamps and personalized content can make comparisons noisy. Playwright supports screenshot style injection, which can suppress known dynamic elements, and masking selected regions. Apply these narrowly: hiding an element that the review is meant to validate can conceal a real regression.
Keep comparison assumptions stable
For meaningful comparisons over time, keep browser engine, fonts, data, viewport, scale and relevant application state consistent. Playwright documents repeatability controls, but the cited documentation does not guarantee pixel-identical screenshots across environments.

Organize artifacts predictably
Include route identity and viewport name in each file, and preserve a consistent output directory. If route names can contain slashes or other awkward filename characters, map them to safe stable names instead of using raw paths. Keep a manifest of URL-to-name mappings when filenames alone would be ambiguous.

A page is captured before its important content appears
Cause: The chosen navigation event completed before client-rendered or delayed content reached the state you need. Fix: Wait for a site-specific selector or application condition after navigation. Avoid assuming one wait mode works for every route.

Mobile screenshots show the wrong layout
Cause: The viewport was changed after navigation, or the chosen width does not cross the site’s intended responsive breakpoint. Fix: Set the viewport when creating the context, before opening the page, and verify your selected widths against the site’s actual responsive behavior.
Some routes fail while others succeed
Cause: A route may redirect, return an HTTP error, time out, require a session, or fail during page loading. Fix: Log the URL, status or thrown error for each route, review failed routes separately, and configure authentication when required. Do not silently treat a missing response as a successful capture.

Images differ between runs
Cause: Dynamic content, fonts, browser differences, data or timing changed. Fix: Stabilize those inputs and wait for the content under review. Mask or hide only irrelevant dynamic regions.
Full-page files are unexpectedly tall or hard to compare
Cause: Full-page capture includes below-the-fold content and has different dimensions from viewport capture. Fix: Use viewport capture for above-the-fold responsive checks; reserve full-page images for reviews that need the entire scrollable document.
When to use a different capture path
For a small one-off screenshot of the current page, Playwright CLI’s screenshot command can capture a page and accepts a custom filename, PNG/JPEG/WebP type, full-page capture and --hires. It is a convenient current-page workflow, not a bulk URL processor unless you add scripting. See Playwright CLI Screenshots & PDF.
If your integration already uses Chromium directly, Chrome DevTools Protocol’s Page.captureScreenshot exposes format, quality, clipping and capture-beyond-viewport options. It is a lower-level interface; for a multi-route process, Playwright supplies a higher-level page and browser-context workflow. See the Chrome DevTools Protocol Page domain.

Does Playwright have a built-in command to screenshot every URL at two widths?
No. A script must iterate over the URL list and viewport configurations, then call the screenshot operation for each combination.
Are 390 px and 1440 px the correct mobile and desktop widths for every site?
They are example values only. Choose widths based on the breakpoints and review needs of the site being tested.
