Can you use Insta360 360 video for Gaussian Splatting?
Yes. Insta360 360 footage is typically stored as an equirectangular sphere, while Nerfstudio’s Splatfacto pipeline expects perspective camera views. Nerfstudio documents a route for processing 360 images and video—including footage from cameras such as Insta360—by sampling perspective views and estimating camera poses. Its documented image and video processing route uses COLMAP.
That conversion matters: Splatfacto’s rasterizer assumes a perspective camera and does not support equirectangular or fisheye rendering. The practical workflow is to convert the spherical source into perspective views with poses, then train on those results. See Nerfstudio’s custom-data documentation and its Splatfacto documentation.
How to capture footage that is useful for reconstruction
Choose a detailed scene and plan overlapping coverage
Favor scenes with visible texture and detail that image-matching software can recognize. Move around the subject or environment so sampled frames overlap substantially and show surfaces from more than one viewpoint. Nerfstudio advises capturing overlapping, non-blurry images; it does not specify a universal overlap percentage, route, movement speed, shutter speed, or exposure recipe for every scene.

Keep sampled frames sharp
Move steadily and slowly enough that the frames extracted for processing remain clear. Cover the scene from multiple viewpoints rather than relying on a single direction or one orbit. Stabilization can reduce shakiness, but do not assume it can recover detail lost to motion blur.
For Nerfstudio’s 360-video route, position the camera overhead
Nerfstudio recommends holding the camera on top of your head when recording for its documented 360-video workflow. This places the camera holder or support near the bottom of the frame, where the processing step can crop it. This is workflow-specific advice, not a requirement for every reconstruction tool.

Keep the original 360 files
Record in the camera’s 360 mode and retain the original files. An equirectangular file preserves the full sphere; a reframed export selects a flat view and discards the other viewing directions. Do not use a reframed export as the only source for a workflow that needs spherical input. Insta360 recommends retaining the highest resolution and bitrate until final export; see its X5 file export guide.
Reframing also reduces the resolution available in the selected view. Insta360 estimates that X5 8K footage reframed with MegaView yields approximately 4K, while Linear yields approximately 2.5K/1440p. For 5.7K footage, the corresponding estimates are approximately 2.7K and 1080p. These are manufacturer estimates for X5 reframing, not guarantees of Gaussian Splatting quality.

Convert equirectangular footage into perspective views
Use a processor that can sample perspective images from spherical footage and estimate camera poses. Nerfstudio’s ns-process-data supports equirectangular image and video input through its documented custom-data workflow, which uses COLMAP.
For equirectangular images
Nerfstudio’s documented image workflow accepts the equirectangular camera type, crop factors, and a choice of 8 or 14 perspective samples per source image. Eight is its stated default and is sufficient for most documented uses; try 14 if the reconstruction lacks detail or COLMAP struggles to align the views. These are processing parameters, not camera capture settings. The exact command and options are listed in the custom-data guide.

For 360 video
Use the documented video-processing route to sample perspective views and estimate poses. If the lower part of the frame includes the holder or support, Nerfstudio’s workflow includes cropping that area. If alignment is weak or images are blurred, inspect the source quality and scene coverage before increasing the sample count; more samples do not fix missing detail or inadequate viewpoints.
Train Splatfacto on the processed dataset
Once processing has produced perspective images and camera poses, train Splatfacto on that dataset rather than on the raw equirectangular projection. Nerfstudio says Splatfacto works better when initialized with structure-from-motion (SfM) points, such as those generated by COLMAP. Its Splatfacto documentation describes the camera-model limitation and initialization.

Check stabilization and export behavior for your model
Insta360 describes FlowState as a feature for reducing shakiness, but stabilization compatibility varies by camera model and shooting mode. Some workflows apply stabilization in-camera; others may rely on post-production. Keep the camera originals and check the guidance for your specific model and mode before applying edits. Insta360’s X-series stabilization support page documents model- and mode-dependent compatibility.
If your processing pipeline expects spherical input, choose a full 360/equirectangular export—not a reframed flat view—and confirm that the export is not a lower-quality derivative of the source.
360 camera or conventional perspective camera?

These are workflow trade-offs, not evidence that one camera type always produces better splats. The right choice depends on whether all-around capture or a simpler path to perspective input matters more for your scene.
