To take a screenshot and paste it immediately, capture the screen to your clipboard, click the destination app, and use its paste command: Ctrl+V on Windows or Chromebook, Command+V on Mac, or Paste on iPhone. If your device or app does not support direct clipboard capture, save the image first and insert or attach that file.
The exact shortcut depends on your operating system, keyboard, phone model, and the destination field. The procedures below cover the current built-in tools and explain what to do when pasting fails.
Clipboard capture or saved file: which workflow should you use?

Whichever method you choose, first confirm that the destination accepts images. A plain-text field, a protected media viewer, or a website that disables image paste may reject a perfectly valid screenshot.
How do I take a screenshot and paste it on Windows?
Copy the entire screen with Print Screen
- Press Print Screen (sometimes labeled PrtSc or PrtScn). Windows copies the whole screen to the clipboard.
- Open the document, email, chat, form, or image editor where the screenshot belongs.
- Click in the destination and press Ctrl+V. If the field accepts images, the screenshot appears there.
This captures every visible display area in the result. If you use multiple monitors, the exact result can depend on your Windows configuration and keyboard.

Capture a region or window with Snipping Tool
- Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
- Choose the capture mode offered by your Windows version, such as rectangular region, free-form region, window, or full screen.
- Take the snip.
- For immediate pasting, choose the copy control or press Ctrl+C in Snipping Tool, switch to the destination, and press Ctrl+V.
- To keep a file, choose Save or press Ctrl+S, select a folder and image format, and then attach or insert that file from the destination app.
Use a region or window mode when a full-screen capture includes private tabs, notifications, or unrelated monitors.
How do I copy a screenshot on a Mac?
Send the capture to the clipboard
- Use macOS Screenshot controls or a built-in screenshot shortcut to capture the screen, a window, or a selected area.
- When the screenshot thumbnail appears, Control-click the thumbnail.
- Choose Save to Clipboard.
- Open the destination app and press Command+V.
Apple’s current Mac instructions call out the thumbnail menu for directing a screenshot to the clipboard. If you do not choose that option, macOS may save the image as a file instead of making it available for immediate pasting.
Save and insert the image instead
Open the screenshot thumbnail or Screenshot options, choose a save location, and let macOS write the image. In the destination, use its Insert Image, Attach, or Add Photo command and select the saved file. This is the reliable fallback when a paste command does nothing.
Some applications restrict screenshots of their windows. Apple specifically notes that protected media applications such as Apple TV may block capture; this is an application restriction, not a keyboard failure.

How do I take a screenshot and paste it on a Chromebook?
- Press the Chromebook’s Screenshot key, or open Screen Capture from Quick Settings.
- If your keyboard has no Screenshot key, press Shift+Ctrl+Show windows. The Show windows key resembles a rectangle with two vertical lines.
- Choose Full screen, Partial screen, or Window.
- Complete the capture. ChromeOS automatically copies screenshots and recordings to the clipboard according to Google’s Chromebook guidance.
- Move to the destination and press Ctrl+V.
Choose Partial screen to drag around only the content you need, or Window to avoid capturing the shelf and other windows. If automatic copying is unavailable on a managed or older device, open the saved capture from the Files app and use the destination’s attachment control.
How do I take a screenshot and paste it on Android?
Android capture controls vary by manufacturer, model, Android release, and whether navigation buttons or gestures are enabled. There is no single clipboard shortcut that works on every Android phone.
- Use your phone’s documented screenshot gesture or button combination. On many devices this is a simultaneous press of the power and volume-down buttons, but consult the device maker if that does not work.
- After capture, use the on-screen preview controls to copy, share, edit, or save the image.
- Open the destination app, place the cursor or focus in its image-capable field, and tap Paste if the phone offers a copied image.
- If Paste is absent, open the screenshot in Photos or the gallery and use Share, Attach, or the destination’s image picker.
Google’s Android guidance directs users to the manufacturer’s support instructions when the standard method fails. That qualification matters: menus and button combinations differ across Samsung, Google Pixel, Motorola, Xiaomi, and other devices.
How do I take a screenshot and paste it on an iPhone?
Capture on a Face ID iPhone
- Quickly press and release the side button and volume-up button together.
- Tap the thumbnail or open the screenshot controls to mark up, crop, share, or save it.
- To paste a copied image, tap the destination field and choose Paste.
Capture on a Home-button iPhone
On models with Touch ID, press the side button and Home button together. On models with a top button, press the top button and Home button together. Release quickly rather than holding the buttons, which can open other device controls.

Saved screenshots appear in Photos in the Screenshots collection. If direct paste is unavailable, open Photos, select the image, use Copy or Share, and then insert it with the destination app’s controls. Current iOS instructions include markup, cropping, sharing, and saving tools; older iOS releases may show a different thumbnail menu.
Copy from iPhone to another Apple device
Universal Clipboard can copy an image on iPhone and paste it on another nearby Apple device. Both devices must use the same Apple Account, with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff enabled. Clipboard content is temporary, so paste soon after copying. A VPN or local-network restriction can prevent the devices from seeing one another.
How do I paste a screenshot into a document?
- Capture to the clipboard, or copy the saved image from your file or photo app.
- Open the document and click exactly where the image should appear.
- Use the platform paste command: Ctrl+V on Windows or Chromebook, Command+V on Mac, or tap Paste on iPhone.
- If the document offers paste choices, select the option that keeps the image rather than plain text.
- Resize or crop the inserted image using the document’s image controls.
In a web form, look for a paperclip, image icon, or upload button when paste is not supported. A destination can accept typed text while rejecting image data.

It was saved as a file
Check the location selected by your screenshot tool, then use the operating system’s file search. On iPhone, open Photos and the Screenshots collection. On Windows, review Snipping Tool’s save location and recent files. On Chromebook, check the Files app and its recent items.
The destination rejected it
Try a different image-capable app, use Insert or Attach instead of Paste, and check whether the field permits images. Security-sensitive viewers and protected video windows may deliberately block capture or insertion.

The shortcut does nothing
- Check your device model and keyboard layout; some keyboards require an Fn key with Print Screen or a special Screenshot key.
- Use the platform’s graphical capture tool instead of a shortcut.
- On Android, follow the phone manufacturer’s instructions.
- Test another window: the original app may restrict screenshots.
Paste inserts text or nothing
- Click an image-capable destination first; focus may still be in a plain-text field.
- Capture or copy the image again, then paste immediately.
- Save the screenshot and use Insert, Attach, or the photo picker.
- Check whether the destination has a file-size, format, or security limit.
The wrong area was captured
Use Snipping Tool’s region or window mode on Windows, Partial screen or Window on Chromebook, and the selected-area controls in macOS Screenshot. On phones, crop the image before sharing or inserting it.
Mac saved the file instead of copying it
Control-click the screenshot thumbnail and choose Save to Clipboard, then return to the destination and press Command+V.

iPhone cannot paste to a Mac
Confirm the same Apple Account, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Handoff, device proximity, and local-network access. Temporarily check whether a VPN is preventing Universal Clipboard communication.

Can I paste a screenshot into every app?
No. The destination must accept image data, and some protected apps or fields intentionally block image paste. Use the app’s Insert or Attach control when direct paste is unavailable.
