Save Page Now handles one submitted page at a time: it does not crawl the rest of a site or guarantee that every image, script, or interactive feature will work in the replay.
If you need a collection-scale crawl, the Internet Archive points organizations to Archive-It. If you only need a current screenshot for documentation, a screenshot API can help, but that is not an archival capture and does not replace a Wayback save.
Save one page with Save Page Now
The Internet Archive’s Save Page Now workflow is for submitting a single page URL. It may capture that page’s images and CSS when available, but it does not save outlinks, multiple pages, directories, or an entire website. Browser extensions, add-ons, and a bookmarklet are alternate ways to invoke a single-page save; they have the same scope limitations. - Open the Wayback Machine’s Save Page Now form.
- Enter the full URL of the page you want to preserve, then submit it.
- When the save completes, copy the resulting archived URL. Use that URL to revisit or share the capture.
- Open the archived page and check the content and links that matter to you. A successful submission does not mean every asset or interaction was captured.
For a useful record, keep the original page URL and the capture timestamp alongside the archived URL. The timestamp identifies the specific archived version; without it, a reader may not know which capture you intended.

Can you archive a whole website?
Not with a single Save Page Now submission. It saves one submitted page, not a site crawl. If you want several pages represented, submit their URLs separately and inspect each resulting capture. This still does not amount to a complete backup: pages may be inaccessible to crawlers, resources may be missed, and interactive behavior may not replay.
For organizations and large collections
The Internet Archive directs organizations seeking to archive entire websites or build large collections to Archive-It. Its Help Center describes Archive-It as a subscription service for harvesting, building, and preserving digital collections, with crawling projects and technical and web-archivist support. Check the service for current terms and pricing; the cited Help Center article does not establish current prices.
Why an ordinary crawl may not find every page
A page can be missed if crawlers do not know the site exists, cannot access it, or are instructed not to crawl it. The Internet Archive’s guidance identifies robots exclusions, access restrictions, and owner exclusion requests as reasons pages may be absent. It recommends making a site discoverable through links from directories and related sites, and checking that robots.txt and in-page META robots directives do not tell crawlers to avoid it. A known URL can be submitted directly when possible, but that does not override access restrictions.

Find a saved page and interpret its capture
Enter a domain or page URL in the Wayback Machine to browse the available capture history. When you know the URL, searching by URL is more direct than using Site Search: the Internet Archive says Site Search helps locate site homepages using descriptive terms, rather than searching the full text of archived pages.

The calendar’s status colors indicate the server response associated with a capture: blue is a 2xx response, green a 3xx redirect, orange a 4xx client error, and red a 5xx server error. These colors do not prove that all page elements rendered or were preserved. The Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine guidance also describes a wildcard URL pattern for listing a site’s captures or files; check the live interface for the exact form because interface details can change.
Check the timestamp before treating replay as historical evidence
Wayback captures can be incomplete. If a link has no archived copy, Wayback may use a nearby available date or retrieve the link from the live web. Check the date code embedded in the replay URL, formatted as yyyymmddhhmmss in the Internet Archive’s example, and verify that the content you are viewing belongs to the intended capture. A page that loads is not, by itself, proof that every linked item came from that same moment.

What a Wayback capture may omit
Images, CSS, scripts, and linked files
Although Save Page Now attempts to capture a submitted page’s images and CSS when available, dependencies can be missing. The Internet Archive says missing images are often not on its servers because they were not captured. Try entering the image or file URL separately in Wayback to see whether it has its own capture. A save of the page does not automatically save the pages or files linked from it.
The Internet Archive Help Center says there can be a 3–10 hour delay between a crawl and its appearance in Wayback. That is guidance in an article marked updated without a visible update date, not a guaranteed service-level target. If a capture is not visible immediately, check again later, but do not assume it will necessarily appear.
Forms and dynamic behavior
Some dynamic pages archive adequately when rendered as standard HTML, but forms, JavaScript, or features that need to contact the original host may not work in replay. Simple HTML is generally easier to archive. The Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine general information explains these limitations; a historical copy should not be treated as a functioning copy of the original service.

Search-only and orphan pages
Crawlers do not enter queries into a site’s search box, and an unlinked page may be missed. If you know the URL, a direct Save Page Now submission is a better attempt than waiting for a crawl to discover it, subject to the site’s access settings and other capture limits.
Troubleshoot missing or broken captures

The right choice depends on scope and operating model: a manual save of one URL, or an organizational collection-crawling project. The cited Internet Archive pages do not provide current price figures for a price comparison.

Archived URLs can be copied and referenced. The Internet Archive’s guidance reports MLA’s advice to cite the webpage as usual and then include the Wayback information. It says there is no established citation format specific to Wayback captures and recommends providing more information. Include the original page URL and capture timestamp as well as the archived URL, so a reader can identify the version you mean.

Do not present a Wayback capture as a guaranteed backup. The Internet Archive says its terms do not cover public backups and it cannot guarantee that a site has been or will be archived. For legal proceedings, the Archive says the Wayback Machine was not expressly designed for legal use and points to a separate affidavit request procedure. If you need evidence for a proceeding, follow that official process rather than assuming a capture alone will be accepted.
