Use your bank’s official website and your device’s built-in screenshot function to record only the relevant part of a net banking page. Keep passwords, PINs, one-time codes and unrelated financial details out of the image; save an unchanged original securely, and make a separately redacted copy if you need to share it. A screenshot can support a record or complaint, but it does not by itself establish that a transaction occurred.
Prepare a safe capture
- Use a trusted device and an up-to-date browser. CERT-In advises keeping the operating system and browser current and protecting the computer. Its online banking guidance is available at CERT-In’s online banking advisory.
- Start from the bank’s known official address: type it into the browser, or reach it through the bank’s official home page. Check that the displayed domain is correct and that the connection is secure before signing in. Do not follow unexpected email, SMS, search-ad or pop-up links to a login page. CERT-In and Indian Bank’s online banking privacy guidance both advise checking the domain and HTTPS/security indicators.
- Never include or share your password, PIN, one-time password or other security access code. Open only the relevant account or transaction, and frame the capture to include enough context to identify what the page shows without exposing unrelated accounts or personal information.
Capture the page with your device
- Sign in only after verifying the bank’s official domain and secure connection. Navigate to the account, transaction or page you need to document.
- Arrange the page so the relevant information and useful context are visible, while keeping unrelated personal and financial details out of frame. If the content extends beyond the visible screen, capture the necessary sections separately rather than including more information than needed.
- Use your device’s ordinary screenshot function. The correct shortcut depends on the device and operating system; the official guidance cited here does not prescribe a particular shortcut or screenshot format. If a page-oriented document is more useful, use the browser’s print or save-to-PDF function instead.
- Check the saved file to confirm it is legible and shows the intended information. Do not alter the original. Give it a descriptive filename and note the date, time, bank, page and reason for capture.
- Use the bank’s log-off control when finished, then close the session. CERT-In advises logging out through the banking service’s control and not leaving a logged-in session unattended.
Store and share the record carefully
Keep the original in a secure location. If someone needs a copy, create a separate copy and redact identifiers or details they do not need. Preserve the original unchanged. A screenshot can contain sensitive information even when it does not show a password, so consider what the recipient actually needs before sending it.
What a screenshot can—and cannot—show
The National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal FAQ lists images among possible supporting evidence, alongside items such as bank statements, online money transfer receipts, URLs, videos and other documents. It also says to keep evidence related to a complaint and provide accurate, complete information. That guidance means an image may be useful supporting material; it does not say a screenshot alone proves a transaction or is sufficient in every proceeding.
If you are documenting a cybercrime or disputed transaction, preserve related records rather than relying on one image. The portal says complaints are handled by the State or Union Territory police authorities selected in the complaint. Submit accurate details and relevant supporting information through the appropriate channel.
