For a normal image, right-click it (Control-click on macOS) and choose Save image as. That downloads the image file the page exposes. If that option is unavailable, the image is drawn on a canvas, or you need the exact rendered appearance with text and overlays, capture a screenshot instead. The best method depends on whether you need the original asset, one rendered element, the visible viewport, or the entire page.

Choose the right capture method

What you need Best method What you get
The original image file Save image as, or find its network request Source PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, or another exposed format; usually the best resolution
One rendered element Firefox Screenshot Node or a browser element/area capture The element as displayed, including CSS, text, and effects
The current screen Operating-system or browser viewport screenshot Only the visible viewport
A complete long page Firefox full-page, Chrome full-size, or Edge full-size capture Content below the fold in one image
A visual record with overlays Screenshot rather than downloading the asset The rendered appearance, including controls, banners, and annotations

A downloaded file and a screenshot are not interchangeable. Saving the source preserves the asset’s pixels and metadata when available. A screenshot records what the browser rendered at a particular viewport, zoom, display scale, and loading state.

Save an ordinary image directly

  1. Move the pointer over the image.
  2. Right-click it on Windows or Linux, or Control-click on macOS.
  3. Select Save image as (the wording can vary slightly by browser).
  4. Choose a folder and filename, then confirm the download.

Open the downloaded file to verify that it is the expected image and not a tiny preview, placeholder, or differently sized responsive variant. If the page offers an explicit download button, that may provide a higher-resolution or licensed file than the context menu.

Capture an image in Google Chrome

Capture an area or the full page

  1. Open the page you want to record.
  2. Open DevTools with Ctrl+Shift+I (Windows/Linux) or Command+Option+I (macOS).
  3. Open the Command Menu with Ctrl+Shift+P (Windows/Linux) or Command+Shift+P (macOS).
  4. Type screenshot and choose the command for a visible area, selected area, or full-size screenshot.
  5. For an area capture, draw the rectangle. For a full-size capture, let Chrome stitch the page and save the resulting image.

Use a consistent window width and zoom before capturing. A full-size image can be extremely tall; if the page contains sticky headers, animated content, or lazy images, scroll through it first so the browser has a chance to load everything.

Capture one DOM element

  1. In DevTools, open the Elements panel.
  2. Use the element picker or the markup tree to select the image, card, figure, or other element.
  3. Use the available screenshot command from the Command Menu to capture the selected area or node.

If the element is a plain <img>, downloading its source is normally sharper. Use an element screenshot when its appearance depends on CSS, captions, masks, badges, or other surrounding content.

Capture an image in Firefox

Visible or full-page screenshot

Firefox’s built-in screenshot tool can capture the visible portion or the full page, then lets you copy or download the result. Open the page, invoke the screenshot tool from the page context menu or browser tools, choose the desired scope, and save or copy the image.

One element with Screenshot Node

  1. Open Developer Tools and select the Inspector.
  2. Click the element you want to capture.
  3. Open the selected element’s context menu.
  4. Choose Screenshot Node.

This is useful for a single card, chart, image, or component whose rendered size matters. Firefox Developer Tools supports both a single-element screenshot and full-page capture.

Capture an image in Microsoft Edge

Viewport screenshot

  1. Open DevTools and enable device mode if it is not already active.
  2. Open More options.
  3. Choose Capture screenshot for the current viewport.

Full-page screenshot

Choose Capture a full size screenshot from the same menu. Edge captures content below the visible viewport, subject to the page’s loading and rendering behavior.

When right-click or Save image as does not work

The image is drawn on a canvas

A canvas may contain pixels without exposing a normal image URL. Use an area or element screenshot. If you need the underlying file, inspect the page’s requests instead of relying on the context menu.

The picture is a CSS background

Inspect the element in Developer Tools and look for background-image or a linked resource. Open the image URL in a new tab and save it normally, or capture the element if the background is combined with gradients, text, or masks.

A lazy-loaded wrapper shows a placeholder

Scroll the image into view and wait for it to finish loading. In DevTools, inspect the element and its loaded resources. The real URL may be in srcset, a data attribute, or a request made after scrolling.

  3. Click likely requests and inspect their dimensions, preview, and URL.
  4. Open the resource in a new tab and use Save image as.

Network inspection can reveal resources stored or requested by the page, including PNG images, even when scripts disable the context menu.

Improve capture quality

  • Use the source when possible: it avoids display scaling and browser compression.
  • Set the viewport first: responsive layouts may select different images at different widths.
  • Account for display scale: a high-DPI screen can produce different pixel dimensions from a standard display.
  • Wait for lazy content: scroll through long pages and wait for images, fonts, and charts to settle.
  • Stop animation when accuracy matters: pause video or animated interfaces before capturing.
  • Check transparency: a transparent source may appear with a browser-colored background in a screenshot.
  • Use a stable zoom: browser zoom changes the rendered dimensions of an element capture.

Privacy, copyright, and permission

Capturing an image does not grant permission to republish it. Before downloading or publishing, check the site’s license, copyright notice, attribution rules, and any restrictions on commercial or editorial reuse. Avoid capturing personal information, private dashboards, or paid content unless you are authorized to do so. If you are documenting a page for evidence, keep the URL, date, viewport, and any relevant surrounding context with the file.

Automate webpage image capture with ScreenshotNeo

For repeatable captures, CI jobs, many URLs, or pages that require browser setup, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It can capture PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status.

Troubleshooting checklist

The saved file is low resolution

Look for the original network resource or a larger srcset candidate. A screenshot cannot add detail that was not rendered; increase the viewport or device scale only when the page can provide more pixels.

The full-page capture has blank sections

Scroll the page first, wait for lazy content, disable aggressive animation, and capture again. For automation, wait for a meaningful selector or network idle rather than using an arbitrary short delay.

The page shows a CAPTCHA or bot check

Do not attempt to defeat an access control. Capture only pages you are authorized to access, and use a normal authenticated browser session when appropriate. An automated service may classify the response as a bot check instead of producing a clean shot.

The image will not open

Confirm the download completed, check the file extension against its content type, and try opening the resource directly in a new tab. For API workflows, inspect the HTTP status and billing/verdict headers before saving the response as an image.

Quick decision guide

  1. Can you see a normal image and need its original pixels? Choose Save image as.
  2. Is it a canvas, CSS background, or lazy-loaded component? Inspect Network resources or capture the rendered element.
  3. Do you need one component exactly as displayed? Use Firefox Screenshot Node or a DevTools element capture.
  4. Do you need everything below the fold? Use a browser’s full-page command.
  5. Do you need repeatable, multi-URL, or server-side captures? Use an API such as ScreenshotNeo and set waits, viewport, cleanup, and output options explicitly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I capture an image if the site disables right-click?

Yes. Right-click blocking does not prevent you from using browser Developer Tools, a full-page or area screenshot, or the Network panel to locate a resource you are authorized to access.

Why is my screenshot different from the page I see?

Responsive breakpoints, browser zoom, display scale, lazy loading, animation, and sticky overlays can all change the rendered result. Set the viewport and zoom deliberately, then wait for the page to settle.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Should I save the image or take a screenshot?

Save the source when you need the original file and highest available resolution. Take a screenshot when you need the rendered layout, captions, controls, overlays, or a canvas result.
