To save an image of an HTML file as it appears in Safari on your Mac, use macOS’s screenshot shortcuts: press Shift-Command-4, then press Space, and click the Safari window. For a crop, press Shift-Command-4 and drag around the area; for the entire display, press Shift-Command-3. These capture the rendered content currently visible on screen—not the HTML source or an entire long page below the viewport.
Capture the Safari window as an image
- Open the HTML file in Safari and wait for it to finish rendering. Arrange the window, page zoom, and scroll position so the content you want is visible.
- Press Shift-Command-4, then press Space. The pointer changes to a camera.
- Click the Safari window. To omit the window shadow, hold Option while clicking.
Apple Support documents this as a macOS screenshot action, not an HTML export command. The resulting image reflects the visible Safari window and its current framing.
Choose what to capture
Capture a selected area
Press Shift-Command-4, drag the crosshair around the portion of the page you want, then release. Press Escape to cancel. To reposition the selection while keeping its size, hold Space while dragging.
Capture the entire display
Press Shift-Command-3. This includes everything displayed on the screen, not just the Safari page.

Use Screenshot controls
Press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot app controls. In Options, you can set a timer, choose a save location, show or hide the pointer, and control the floating thumbnail. Screenshots go to the desktop by default unless you change the save location.
Get a clean image of a long page
The Apple-documented Mac screenshot modes capture the display, a selected portion, or a window; they do not provide a one-action capture of a webpage extending below the visible viewport. Scroll and capture separate sections if you need the entire page as images, or use a different workflow for a full-page image. A single window screenshot will not include content below the current scroll position.

Choose the right file format
On supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Screenshot app options may offer SDR (Most Compatible), saved as PNG, and HDR, saved as HEIF. Availability depends on the Mac model and macOS version. Choose SDR/PNG when compatibility matters and the option is available.

To save the webpage or its source
In Safari, choose File > Save As, then choose Web Archive or Page Source. Web Archive saves graphics and keeps links working as long as the destination pages remain available. Page Source saves only the HTML source. Neither format is a screenshot image, and some webpages may prevent saving displayed items.
To save an image already on the page
Control-click the image and choose Save Image to Downloads, Save Image As, or Add Image to Photos. Some images, including some background images, cannot be saved this way.

Troubleshooting
- The capture misses part of the page: A screenshot only captures what is visible in the chosen screen area or window. Adjust the scroll position and framing, or capture separate sections.
- The camera cursor does not appear: Use the window shortcut in sequence: press Shift-Command-4, then press Space. Click the Safari window once the pointer changes to a camera.
- You captured the wrong area: Press Escape before completing a selection to cancel, then repeat the shortcut and drag a new region.
- The screenshot is difficult to find: Check the desktop, the default save location, or open Shift-Command-5 and review Options for the selected save location.
- You need a compatible image format: On supported Macs with macOS Tahoe 26 or later, select SDR (Most Compatible) for PNG if available; HDR capture is saved as HEIF.
