Open your localhost page in a browser, arrange it as you want it to appear, then press Shift-Command-4 and drag around the page area. That captures the selected visible region. Use Shift-Command-3 to capture the entire display instead. These macOS shortcuts capture what is on screen; they do not, by themselves, capture a long page below the viewport.
Capture the visible localhost page with macOS
- Start your development server with the command used by your project, then open its localhost address in Safari, Chrome, or another browser. The server command depends on your framework and project.
- Arrange the browser window and scroll the page to the state you want to show. Close unrelated windows or move them out of the capture area if needed.
- Press Shift-Command-4. When the pointer becomes a crosshair, drag a rectangle around the visible webpage area. Release to take the screenshot.
- To capture the full display instead, press Shift-Command-3. This includes everything visible on that screen, not just the browser.
macOS saves screenshots to the Desktop by default unless you change the save location. For Apple’s instructions on screenshot shortcuts and controls, see Take a screenshot on your Mac.
Choose where the screenshot is saved
Press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot controls, then choose Options and a destination under Save to. Available choices can vary by macOS version. If you see a screenshot thumbnail after capturing, you can click it to open the editing controls before it disappears. Apple documents these controls in its Mac screenshot guide.
Set a specific browser viewport first
If you need a screenshot that demonstrates how the page looks at a particular screen width or pixel ratio, use the browser’s device or responsive preview before taking the macOS screenshot. These previews control the webpage’s browser viewport; you still use macOS capture controls to create the image.

Safari Responsive Design Mode
With the webpage focused, choose Develop > Enter Responsive Design Mode, or press Control-Command-R. Set the preview dimensions and display pixel ratio, then capture the visible page region using Shift-Command-4. Apple describes the mode in its Responsive Design Mode documentation.
If the Develop menu is missing, open Safari Settings with Command-comma, go to Advanced, and enable Show features for web developers. Then use Develop > Show Web Inspector or press Option-Command-I to open the inspector. You can also right-click the page and choose Inspect Element. These tools are optional for a basic screenshot. Chrome Device Mode
In Chrome on Mac, press Command-Shift-M to toggle Device Mode, then set the preview you need. Capture the visible page with macOS screenshot controls afterward. Google’s shortcut reference verifies the Device Mode shortcut; it does not establish a full-page capture workflow. See Chrome DevTools keyboard shortcuts.
Visible-area screenshots are not full-page captures
Shift-Command-4 captures a rectangle currently visible on the screen, and Shift-Command-3 captures the display. Neither shortcut captures the entire scrollable document when the page continues below the browser viewport. For a full-page image, use a browser-specific full-page capture feature or another tool, and check the current instructions for your browser and version.

Troubleshooting
- The screenshot is not on the Desktop: Open Screenshot controls with Shift-Command-5, then check Options > Save to for the selected destination.
- The image includes the wrong part of the browser: Before capturing, scroll to the intended page state, resize or reposition the window, and drag the selection around the page content rather than the whole display.
- Safari has no Develop menu: In Safari Settings > Advanced, enable Show features for web developers. The setting label can vary by Safari version.
- The capture omits content farther down the page: The macOS shortcut captures visible pixels, not a scrolling document. Use a full-page capture method supported by your browser or another tool instead.
- The responsive preview does not change the saved image dimensions: Responsive Design Mode changes the browser preview. The final capture is still a screen capture of the visible area; ensure the preview and browser window are sized as intended before selecting the region.
- ScreenshotNeo cannot load a localhost URL: The API needs a page it can reach. A localhost address on your Mac is local to your machine; make the page accessible to the service before requesting it.
