To capture a website in dark mode with Screenshot.Rocks, first make the webpage itself render dark, then capture it. Use the site’s own dark-theme control if available, or set your browser or operating system to prefer dark colors if the site supports that preference. Screenshot.Rocks’ documented capture workflow does not include a setting to force a target website into dark mode.
Make the website render dark before capturing it
A dark browser frame is not the same as dark website content. The page must display its dark theme before you take the screenshot.
- Open the website and switch to its Dark, Night, or equivalent theme if it has one.
- If it follows the device color preference instead, set your browser or operating system to prefer dark mode. The CSS feature
prefers-color-schemelets a website detect whether a user has requested light or dark colors. - Reload the page if necessary, then check that the content—not just browser chrome—has turned dark.
If the site has no dark theme and does not respond to the system preference, the documented Screenshot.Rocks workflow does not establish a way to force it dark. Capture only after verifying the result; otherwise, the image may show the site’s normal light design.
Choose the Screenshot.Rocks capture route
Public page: capture the first screen by URL
- Open the Screenshot.Rocks website capture page.
- Enter the public page URL under “Or capture a website.” The tool says the
https://prefix can be omitted. - Select Mobile if you want a phone layout; otherwise use the desktop layout.
- Press Capture, choose a frame or background if desired, and export the image.
- Inspect the exported image to confirm the page content is dark and the intended area is visible.
This server-side route loads a page as a first-time visitor and captures its first screen, before scrolling. It is for accessible public pages: it cannot see behind a login, reach a local address such as localhost, or capture a site that blocks automated browsers.

Logged-in page or open menu: capture the visible browser tab
- Open the page in your browser, sign in if needed, and set the page to the exact state you want—including any open menu or form.
- Use the Screenshot.Rocks browser extension button.
- The extension captures the visible portion of the current tab and opens it in the editor. Choose a frame or background and export.
Because this method captures the current tab, it can include a logged-in view available in that browser. The extension captures only what is visible; it does not capture the whole scrolling page.
Entire scrolling page: use a browser full-page capture
Neither the public URL capture nor the extension workflow described by Screenshot.Rocks provides a full-page capture. Use your browser’s built-in full-page screenshot function, then import that image into the Screenshot.Rocks editor if you want to apply its framing or background options. Check that the full-page image preserves the dark content and the relevant page state.

Keep the webpage theme separate from the screenshot frame
A frame is presentation styling around the captured image; it does not change the website’s colors. If you want a dark browser surround around a light webpage, choose a dark frame. If you want the webpage itself in dark mode, switch the page theme first. Screenshot.Rocks describes frame options in its browser-frame guidance.
Capture dimensions and practical limits
Screenshot.Rocks lists these specifications for its public URL capture; they are the service’s stated output dimensions, not independent measurements:

The public URL workflow is suitable when you need the initial view of a public page. For a local site, login-protected content, a particular in-browser state, or a full-page image, use an appropriate browser-based capture route instead.
Troubleshoot a screenshot that is not dark or complete
- The page is still light: The frame may be dark while the site content remains light. Turn on the site’s own dark theme, or set the system/browser preference if the site supports it; reload and verify before capture.
- The public capture shows a logged-out page: The URL route loads as a first-time visitor. Use the extension on the already-authenticated visible tab.
- A menu or form state is missing: Open that state in the browser and capture the visible tab with the extension rather than expecting a fresh URL load to preserve it.
- The page is cut off: The URL workflow captures only the first screen, and the extension captures only the visible portion. Use a browser full-page capture and import it for a long page.
- The local or staging page cannot be reached: The public capture server cannot reach
localhost. Use a browser capture on a page you can open locally, or capture and import an image. - The site blocks capture: Screenshot.Rocks notes that its public automated browser may not capture sites that block it. Try the browser extension if the site is open and visible to you.

Privacy notes
Screenshot.Rocks says public captures are returned to the browser rather than stored on its server, and its homepage says images are processed in the browser and never stored on its servers. The extension page likewise says the captured image is not stored. These are the service’s own statements, not an independent privacy audit.
