Set the page and capture options, save each result somewhere with an intentional retention policy, and decide how to handle failures and retries. A schedule expression used in ScreenshotAPI.net’s documentation is 0 * * * *; its timezone behavior depends on the service, so check that before relying on a particular local capture time.
Choose who runs the hourly schedule
A screenshot API renders a page and returns an image or document. The schedule can live with that provider, or in a separate system that calls the capture endpoint on a timetable.

Run an hourly capture from your own scheduler
- Choose a capture endpoint. Confirm it can render the page type you need and returns the format your workflow can store or process.
- Fix the capture settings. Decide the URL, viewport width and height, full-page behavior, and any other options that affect comparability. Keep these settings stable across runs unless you intentionally want different views.
- Schedule the request. Configure your cron, CI, serverless timer, or automation system to call the endpoint hourly. A cron expression such as
0 * * * *is a common top-of-hour schedule, but syntax, timezone, and execution guarantees vary by scheduler. - Store the response. Save each image to provider storage or a destination you control. Use a timestamp or other unique key so later captures do not overwrite earlier ones.
- Define failure and retry behavior. Decide whether a failed capture should be retried, how to avoid duplicate outputs when a scheduler retries, and where alerts should go.
- Set retention and access rules. Choose how long screenshots remain available, who can read them, and how they can be deleted or exported.
- Estimate usage before enabling the job. Count pages, viewport variants, and hourly runs, then check the selected provider’s current quota and billing rules.
ScreenshotAPI.net describes scheduled captures saved to a customer’s S3, Google Cloud, or Wasabi bucket on its product page. That is a provider-specific capability, not a standard feature of every screenshot API. Verify the selected service’s storage destinations and current retention, deletion, export, and access terms before using it as your archive.
Calculate hourly capture volume
Estimate the number of renders with this formula:
pages × viewport widths × runs per page per month
For a simple hourly estimate over a 30-day month, there are 24 × 30 = 720 runs per page and viewport. A provider may count each page and viewport combination as a separate render, but billing rules differ, so check how your service defines a render.

ScreenshotAPI.net’s documentation gives an example of ten pages at two widths captured hourly using 14,400 renders per month. That is its example of render accounting, not a universal industry figure: 10 × 2 × 24 × 30 = 14,400. Actual calendar months have different lengths, and providers may define usage differently. Check the chosen plan’s current limits against your expected schedule.
Decide what a useful hourly archive needs
- Consistent views: Keep viewport dimensions and capture behavior steady if the goal is to compare changes over time.
- Useful filenames or keys: Include the page identity and capture time, while avoiding characters that your storage system treats specially.
- Retention: Set a deletion period that matches the purpose of the archive and its storage budget.
- Failure visibility: Record failed requests and alert on repeated failures rather than silently treating a missing image as an unchanged page.
- Retry safety: A timeout can leave uncertainty about whether a capture completed. Use unique run identifiers or idempotent storage logic where possible so a retry does not erase a good result.
- Timezone awareness: Decide whether “hourly” means every elapsed hour or a specific local clock schedule, and account for daylight-saving transitions if your scheduler uses local time.
Troubleshoot missing, late, or repeated screenshots
No screenshot is created
Check the scheduler’s run history first: it may not have fired, may be paused, or may use a different timezone than expected. If it did fire, inspect the API response and logs for authentication, invalid URL, rendering, timeout, or quota errors. Confirm that the job can write to its configured storage destination.
Captures arrive at an unexpected time
Compare the scheduler timezone, the API’s schedule timezone, and the timestamp convention used in storage. Cron expresses a schedule; it does not by itself establish whether a service interprets that schedule as UTC or local time. Verify the selected service’s current documentation and configuration.

There are duplicate images
Schedulers may retry after a timeout or uncertain response. Check whether each run has a unique identifier, and ensure the storage key and downstream processing distinguish a retry from a new hourly run. If duplicate work is costly, add a lock or deduplication step.
The archive has gaps
Look for failed, delayed, or overlapping runs rather than assuming the page was unchanged. Configure retries with a limit, keep failure logs, and alert when a run is missing beyond the interval your use case can tolerate.
Usage is higher than expected
Recalculate pages × viewports × successful runs and compare it with the provider’s actual definition of billable usage. Check whether retries, multiple output variants, or separate capture options count as additional renders under that service’s rules.
