Choose Capture a full size screenshot instead if you need the page beyond the visible viewport. These are browser viewport dimensions—not the physical dimensions of a Mac display or phone.
Capture a custom-size viewport in Chrome
- Open the website in Chrome.
- Open DevTools, then click Toggle device toolbar in the DevTools action bar.
- In the device toolbar’s Dimensions controls, select Responsive if it is not already selected.
- Enter the desired width and height. You can also drag the viewport handles to resize it.
- Open the device toolbar’s More options menu. Choose Capture screenshot for the visible viewport, or Capture a full size screenshot for the whole page.
Chrome’s DevTools documentation shows 480 × 415 pixels as an example of entered dimensions; it is an interface example, not a recommended size. See Chrome DevTools: Device Mode for the documented workflow and controls.
Choose viewport or full-page capture
- Viewport screenshot: captures the currently visible browser area at the dimensions you set.
- Full-size screenshot: captures the page beyond the visible area as well.
Use the viewport option when you need to inspect how a page appears within a fixed browser window. Use the full-size option when you need content below the fold in one capture. A manually selected portion of the Mac display is a different kind of image: it crops what is currently on screen rather than rendering the website at a specified browser viewport.
Understand viewport pixels and DPR
Chrome DevTools exposes a device pixel ratio (DPR) control. Viewport width and height describe the browser’s logical CSS-pixel area; DPR relates those logical pixels to physical image pixels on a HiDPI display. If a specification requires exact output-image dimensions, check whether it means CSS viewport pixels or image pixels and account for DPR before capturing.

Device emulation is an approximation, not a substitute for a real phone. Chrome describes Device Mode as a first-order approximation and notes that it does not run the page on actual mobile hardware. Test on the target device if device-specific behavior or exact hardware fidelity matters.
Use Firefox Responsive Design Mode
- Open the page in Firefox.
- Toggle Responsive Design Mode with Command-Option-M.
- Edit the width and height above the viewport, or drag its lower-right corner.
- Click the viewport screenshot button to capture the responsive viewport.
Firefox documents separate Developer Tools support for full-page screenshots and an Inspector context-menu action for a selected element. When macOS Screenshot is the right tool
For a crop of what is already visible on the Mac display, press Shift-Command-4 and select an area. Press Shift-Command-5 to open Screenshot controls for capturing the entire screen, a window, or a selected portion; its options include save location, timer, and pointer visibility. This does not set a website’s browser viewport to custom dimensions. See Apple’s Mac screenshot instructions.
