To capture lazy-loaded images in a full-page screenshot, scroll through the page to trigger loading, wait for the relevant images and page-specific content to become ready, then take the screenshot. A full-page option captures the page’s scrollable area; it does not by itself ensure offscreen images were requested or finished loading.

Why a full-page screenshot can still miss images

Many pages defer loading images until they are near the visible part of the page. A screenshot tool can capture the entire scrollable page without first causing every offscreen image to load. As a result, the screenshot may contain blank areas even though the capture itself succeeded.

Playwright documents full-page capture as covering the full scrollable page, and Puppeteer provides a full-page screenshot option. Neither capability alone is a lazy-loading completion check. Playwright’s screenshot documentation and Puppeteer’s ScreenshotOptions reference describe capture behavior, not a universal way to ensure every site’s deferred content is ready.

Capture a page with Playwright

This Node.js example opens the page, scrolls down in viewport-sized steps to trigger viewport-based loading, waits for ordinary image elements to complete, and saves a full-page screenshot. Replace the URL with the page you need to capture.

Install Playwright in your project if needed with npm install playwright, and install its browser binaries with npx playwright install chromium. The scroll pauses and repeated height check are practical starting points, not a guarantee for every site; tune them to the page’s behavior. The image check intentionally fails to complete if an ordinary image fails to load, so investigate the failed URL or add a deliberate timeout and error-handling policy if your capture job must continue despite broken assets.

Adapt the readiness check to the site

  • For an image that matters, img.complete && img.naturalWidth > 0 is a useful check for a standard <img> element. It does not detect CSS background images, custom components, or all application-specific states.
  • If the page shows a loading indicator or has a known completion signal, wait for that too. For example, use a selector or JavaScript condition tied to the page’s own interface.
  • If scrolling causes the document to grow, continue until it reaches a defined stopping condition. Infinite-scroll and virtualized pages may never expose a single final full-page state; decide which content range the capture should include.
  • After scrolling and waiting, return to the desired position if you need a viewport-only or element screenshot rather than a full-page image.

Capture with Puppeteer

Puppeteer documents Page.screenshot() for screenshots, and its screenshot guide includes a navigation example using waitUntil: 'networkidle2'. That is a useful initial navigation condition, but it is not proof that every lazy image has loaded. Scroll and check the content that matters before capture.

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');

(async () => {
  const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
  const page = await browser.newPage();

  try {
    await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });

    await page.evaluate(async () => {
      const step = Math.max(1, window.innerHeight);
      const pause = ms => new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, ms));
      let lastHeight = 0;
      let unchangedPasses = 0;

      while (unchangedPasses < 2) {
        const height = document.documentElement.scrollHeight;
        for (let y = 0; y < height; y += step) {
          window.scrollTo(0, y);
          await pause(150);
        }
        window.scrollTo(0, document.documentElement.scrollHeight);
        await pause(250);

        const nextHeight = document.documentElement.scrollHeight;
        unchangedPasses = nextHeight === lastHeight ? unchangedPasses + 1 : 0;
        lastHeight = nextHeight;
      }
    });

    await page.waitForFunction(() =>
      [...document.images].every(img => img.complete && img.naturalWidth > 0)
    );

    await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

Install Puppeteer with npm install puppeteer. Its guide documents page and element screenshots, and the fullPage option controls whether the capture covers the full page. See Puppeteer’s screenshot guide and ScreenshotOptions for the documented capture options.

Choose the capture method for the job

Need Approach Important limit
One full-page image after deferred assets load Scroll the page, wait for relevant assets and page state, then use Playwright or Puppeteer full-page capture. The full-page setting does not trigger or verify lazy loading by itself.
Capture one element Use the framework’s element screenshot support. Ensure the element is visible and its content is ready first.
Repeatable visual regression checks Playwright’s screenshot assertion can wait for consecutive screenshots to stabilize before comparing against an expectation. It requires the Playwright test runner and visual stability is not proof that every offscreen asset was requested.

Playwright describes its screenshot assertion as waiting until two consecutive page screenshots yield the same result before comparing the last screenshot with the expectation. That facility is useful for visual testing, but it is distinct from the scroll-and-readiness work needed for lazy-loaded resources. See Playwright’s PageAssertions documentation.

Troubleshoot missing images or incomplete captures

Images are blank near the bottom

The capture may have happened before the page scrolled far enough to trigger those images. Scroll in increments through the intended capture area and allow time for the page to react before checking image readiness and capturing.

The script waits forever

A failed image can have complete === true but naturalWidth === 0, so the example’s success-only condition will keep waiting. Inspect failed image requests and decide whether to fix the cause, exclude known broken images from the condition, or use a timeout that reports which images remain unavailable.

Network idle occurs, but images are still missing

Network-idle navigation is an initial wait strategy, not a universal lazy-load signal. The page may not request offscreen assets until scrolling, or may load content after an application-specific event. Trigger the page behavior and wait for its own relevant completion conditions.

The document keeps getting taller

Infinite scrolling can add more content whenever you reach the bottom. Set a maximum scroll depth, item count, or other capture boundary rather than waiting for a final height that may never arrive. Virtualized lists may remove offscreen items from the DOM, so a full-page screenshot may not include everything that was previously visible.

Some visual areas remain empty despite successful image checks

The image condition only covers ordinary <img> elements. Check for CSS background images, lazy-loaded iframes, custom components, consent dialogs, or content that appears only after clicking. Add the appropriate page-specific wait or interaction and inspect the saved screenshot for layout shifts and missing regions.

Its clean-shot steps accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Playwright’s full-page option load lazy images?

No. It captures the scrollable page but does not itself prove offscreen images were requested or finished loading.

Does Puppeteer’s networkidle2 guarantee lazy-loaded images are ready?

No. It can be a useful navigation wait, but offscreen content may not be requested until scrolling or may depend on page-specific behavior.

Will the image check catch CSS background images?

No. The `img.complete` and `img.naturalWidth` check applies to standard `` elements; CSS backgrounds and custom loading behavior need separate checks.
