Use browser automation to make the consent choice the site actually offers, wait until the popup closes and the page is ready, then capture the viewport, full page, or a specific element. With Playwright, the key is to inspect the site-specific consent control first: there is no universal button label or selector, and third-party banners may sit inside an iframe.
Capture the page in five steps
- Open the target URL. Start with the route and browser state your task requires. For repeatable captures, use a consistent browser context and setup.
- Inspect the consent interface. Find the actual control and determine whether it is in the main document or an embedded frame. Prefer an accessible role and name when available; otherwise use a stable selector specific to that site.
- Choose the intended consent action. Accept, reject, or configure the choices according to the purpose of your capture and the options presented. Do not simply hide or delete the popup and treat that as consent.
- Wait for the result. Confirm the popup has closed and, where relevant, that the expected post-consent content has rendered. The signal to check depends on the site.
- Capture and review. Choose the right scope, then inspect the resulting image to verify the overlay is gone and the intended content is visible.
For a banner that appears predictably, Playwright recommends explicitly waiting for it and dismissing it in the normal test flow rather than relying on page.addLocatorHandler(). The handler is intended for unpredictable overlays and is checked during relevant actions or assertions; it does not run merely because time passes.
Playwright JavaScript example
The following is a runnable starting point for a site whose consent control is a button named “Accept all.” Replace that name and the post-consent check with the actual controls and content on your target site. The example uses a persistent browser context so the page can be inspected in a visible browser window.
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const url = process.argv[2];
if (!url) {
throw new Error('Usage: node capture.js https://example.com');
}
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const context = await browser.newContext();
const page = await context.newPage();
try {
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
// Adapt the accessible name to the real consent option on this site.
const acceptButton = page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Accept all', exact: true });
await acceptButton.waitFor({ state: 'visible', timeout: 10_000 });
await acceptButton.click();
// Replace this with a meaningful, site-specific post-consent signal if needed.
await acceptButton.waitFor({ state: 'hidden', timeout: 10_000 });
// Captures the full scrollable page; use fullPage: false for the viewport.
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Install Playwright with npm install playwright and install its browser with npx playwright install chromium. This example assumes the control is in the main frame, its accessible role and name match, and clicking it closes the banner. It is not a universal cookie-banner script.
If the banner is in an iframe
A locator searched in the main page does not search inside a separate frame. After inspecting the page, target the relevant frame and locate the control there. For a frame whose URL contains a recognizable vendor path, a pattern is:
const consentFrame = page.frame({ url: /consent-provider.example/ });
if (!consentFrame) throw new Error('Consent frame not found');
await consentFrame.getByRole('button', { name: 'Accept all', exact: true }).click();
Replace the example URL pattern with the actual frame URL and the button name with the site’s real label. If there are multiple matching frames, identify the right one rather than selecting an arbitrary frame.
Wait for content, not just the overlay
A closed popup does not prove that consent-dependent content has appeared. If the site loads content after the choice, wait for a meaningful element or state that indicates it is ready before taking the screenshot. A timeout is a cue to inspect the page and locator; increasing the timeout blindly can conceal a wrong selector or frame.

Choose the screenshot scope
| Need | Playwright capture | What it includes |
|---|---|---|
| Visible browser viewport | await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' }) |
The current viewport. |
| Below-the-fold content too | await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true }) |
The full scrollable page. |
| One component or region | await page.getByTestId('summary').screenshot({ path: 'element.png' }) |
The selected element; replace the test ID with a locator suitable for the page. |
Playwright also supports device-scale options for higher-resolution output. Choose the scale deliberately because it affects image dimensions. Its screenshot guidance distinguishes visual verification and bug documentation from understanding structure: use accessibility snapshots or page inspection to identify controls and read page structure, then use a screenshot to check visual layout. Troubleshooting
The consent button locator times out
- Check whether the control is inside an iframe; a main-frame locator will not find it there.
- Inspect the accessible name, role, and actual button text. Sites may offer separate accept, reject, or settings controls.
- Wait for the banner to appear before interacting, and verify the locator matches the intended control rather than a similarly named page element.
A forced click still does not work
In Playwright, forcing a click skips certain actionability checks, such as whether an element is visible, stable, or obstructed. It does not switch the locator to another frame. Resolve the frame and selector first instead of using force as a fix.
JavaScript cannot find the button
A document.querySelector() call in the main frame cannot simply query the DOM of a cross-origin iframe. Use Playwright’s frame-aware API after identifying the relevant frame.

The banner vanished but content is missing
Hiding an overlay is not the same as recording consent. The site may keep consent-gated content unavailable or show the banner again on a later run. Use the site’s actual consent control, then wait for the expected content or state.
The popup appears only sometimes
For a predictable banner, wait for it explicitly and dismiss it in the regular flow. For an unpredictable overlay, Playwright’s locator handler may be useful, but it is not a timer-based watcher; it runs only during relevant actions or assertions. Inspect the page when behavior differs between runs.
Reliability and output considerations
- Keep browser state intentional. A fresh context can expose the banner on each run; reused state may preserve a previous choice. Choose based on whether the task is testing first-visit behavior or capturing a returning-user view.
- Wait for the page’s real readiness condition. Navigation completing does not necessarily mean all dynamic or consent-dependent content is ready. Prefer a meaningful site-specific signal over an arbitrary delay.
- Review full-page captures. A full-page image includes content beyond the initial viewport, but lazy-loaded regions may require scrolling or site-specific waits before capture.
- Record the choice in your workflow. Accepting, rejecting, and configuring preferences can produce different page states; select the choice that matches the task and retain that distinction in repeatable tests.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the same cookie-banner selector on every website?
No. The control name, markup, consent provider, and frame location vary by site, so inspect the target page and adapt the locator.
Does hiding a cookie popup mean the site recorded my choice?
No. Hiding the interface can leave consent state unchanged and may prevent consent-dependent content from appearing.
