Use a full-page screenshot for the whole document; use a viewport screenshot with the footer visible to preserve its on-screen position. A full-page capture is not guaranteed to place a fixed or sticky footer exactly once or where you expect, so inspect the saved image before attaching it to documentation.
Choose the capture that matches the record you need

Playwright supports viewport, element, and full-page screenshots. Its documentation describes a full-page screenshot as the full scrollable page shown as if it fit on a very tall screen (Playwright screenshots).
Check whether the footer is fixed or sticky
These CSS terms describe different behaviors, and the distinction helps explain why a footer may appear differently in a viewport image, an expanded full-page image, and a PDF.
- Fixed: In visual media, a fixed element is generally positioned relative to the viewport and removed from the normal document flow. Inspect its computed
positionand inset values, such asbottom. - Sticky: A sticky element remains in normal flow until it reaches a threshold, then sticks relative to its nearest scrolling ancestor and containing block. Ancestors with
overflow: hidden,overflow: scroll, oroverflow: autocan affect its behavior.
These positioning rules do not establish how every browser, page structure, or screenshot tool will render the footer in a full-page capture. Confirm the actual output rather than assuming the footer will appear once in the intended position. See MDN’s explanation of the CSS position property.

For a whole-page image, Playwright’s screenshot API accepts fullPage: true. A regular screenshot captures the current view unless you select full-page behavior.

The css scale maps screenshot pixels to CSS pixels and can produce a smaller capture; device scale uses the device pixel ratio. Choose based on whether file size or higher-density output matters more, then check text and details at the size people will review them. See the Playwright screenshot API.
Prepare long pages and check lazy-loaded content
A page’s load event does not necessarily mean every below-the-fold image is ready. Images marked loading="lazy" may be deferred until they approach the viewport. For a long page, scroll through the content so deferred visuals have a chance to load, wait for the page to settle, and then take the intended capture. MDN explains this behavior in its guide to lazy loading.

Before using the output, open it at full size and check that the page content is present, the footer is legible, and images have appeared. Look for gaps, unexpected repeated overlays, or a footer position that does not match the documentation’s purpose. If a full-page image does not show the desired on-screen footer state, make a separate viewport capture with the footer visible.
Use a PDF when pagination is useful
Playwright’s page.pdf() renders with print CSS by default. A site’s print rules can hide or change elements, and fixed-position elements may be placed in the same position on each printed page. A PDF is therefore not automatically a faithful copy of the screen layout or footer behavior.

Troubleshoot a footer that looks wrong
- The footer is missing from the full-page image: Capture the viewport while the footer is visible. For a sticky footer, inspect its scrolling ancestor and containing block; full-page output is not guaranteed to reproduce the browser’s scrolled state.
- The footer appears in an unexpected place or more than once: Check whether it is fixed or sticky, then inspect the actual output. If the record needs the on-screen position, make a separate viewport screenshot.
- Images are blank near the bottom: Scroll through the page before capture to prompt lazy-loaded images to load, then allow them to render and inspect the result.
- The PDF differs from the website: Print CSS is applied by default. Check the site’s print rules; if you need screen styling, emulate screen media before calling
page.pdf(). - The footer is clipped in an element screenshot: Confirm that the selector identifies the intended element and use a viewport or full-page capture if surrounding content or the footer’s on-screen placement matters.
