Build the endpoint from four parts: an HTTP entry point, a serverless function running a browser, Playwright navigation and screenshot logic, and a way to return or store the resulting image. On AWS, a Lambda Function URL is the simpler direct HTTP option; API Gateway adds API-management features for production needs. Neither choice by itself establishes that the browser runs in India or that a particular data-residency requirement is met. Verify execution region and data handling with the actual service before deploying.
How the screenshot API works
A client sends a target URL and capture options to your endpoint. The function validates the request, launches Chromium through a Playwright-compatible runtime, navigates to the page, captures the requested area, and returns the image bytes or stores the file and returns a reference.
For a small synchronous service, the flow can be:
- Accept an HTTP request with the target URL, viewport, format, and capture mode.
- Reject unsafe URLs and enforce navigation, time, and output-size limits.
- Launch the browser, navigate using a deliberate readiness condition, and capture the viewport or full page.
- Return the bytes with an image content type, or save the output and return a URL or job result.
For larger images, slow pages, or workloads that may exceed the function or gateway request deadline, accept a job asynchronously, save the result, and let the caller check status and retrieve it. Confirm current timeouts, payload limits, and regional behavior for the AWS services you choose.
Choose the AWS HTTP entry point
Lambda Function URL
AWS describes Function URLs as a simple, direct HTTP endpoint for a Lambda function. Choose one when the endpoint needs straightforward request/response behavior and does not need API Gateway’s broader API-management controls. Review the URL’s access configuration and protect the function against untrusted requests.

API Gateway
AWS describes API Gateway as the more advanced option for fully featured APIs. It is a better fit when you need features such as richer authentication, throttling, custom domains, request or response transformations, or broader API management. Additional layers also mean more configuration and cost considerations.
AWS documentation states default limits of 1,000 concurrent Lambda executions per Region and up to 10,000 API Gateway requests per second per Region, with 5,000 burst capacity. These are documented defaults, not screenshot-performance guarantees; quotas and availability can vary, so check the current limits for your account and deployment region before launch.
Define the request and capture contract
Make the capture behavior explicit so callers know what the response contains. A useful request contract includes:
- URL: the only destination the browser should visit, subject to strict validation.
- Viewport: width and height for viewport captures.
- Mode: viewport or full-page screenshot.
- Format: for example, PNG or JPEG, with any quality setting defined only for formats that support it.
- Delivery: image bytes in the response, or a stored object/reference for larger or asynchronous results.
Playwright supports viewport and full-page screenshots as distinct modes, along with output and capture controls such as masking. Choose the mode deliberately: full-page captures can produce much larger dimensions and payloads, and may take longer to process. Measure with representative pages rather than assuming a fixed execution time or file size.

Implement the Playwright capture logic
The following is the core of a Node.js handler; the HTTP adapter and Chromium launch configuration depend on the Lambda-compatible browser package and deployment bundle you select. Confirm that package’s current support for your Lambda runtime and architecture. Community package documentation is not an AWS compatibility guarantee.

};This example shows the request flow, not a complete SSRF defense or a drop-in Lambda browser bundle. Adapt the launch options and packaging to the Chromium binary you deploy. If using API Gateway, configure binary media handling as needed for your integration; alternatively, store the image and return a reference instead of encoding it into the response.
Secure an endpoint that accepts arbitrary URLs
A browser navigating to caller-controlled URLs can reach resources that should not be exposed. Scheme validation alone is insufficient. Treat URL capture as an SSRF-sensitive feature and enforce policy before navigation and at the network layer.
- Allow only HTTP and HTTPS; reject credentials in URLs and malformed hostnames.
- Block loopback, private, link-local, multicast, and cloud metadata addresses. Check resolved addresses and account for DNS rebinding and redirects.
- Restrict outbound network access where possible, and revalidate each redirect destination.
- Set a maximum navigation duration, page dimensions, output size, and request rate. Limit concurrency so expensive pages cannot exhaust the function.
- Do not expose internal error details or browser logs to untrusted callers; log safely without storing sensitive page content unnecessarily.
- Use authentication and abuse controls appropriate to the endpoint, particularly if it is publicly reachable.
Plan India-region execution and data handling
An Indian use case does not automatically mean the browser executes in India. Select an AWS region only after checking current Lambda and API Gateway regional availability and your application’s latency and compliance needs. Also determine whether the target website’s response varies by the browser’s egress location; a function’s deployment region and the target page’s geolocation behavior are separate questions.

For a managed screenshot service, verify its actual execution location, image retention, data residency terms, and outbound network behavior directly. A marketplace listing can demonstrate that hosted screenshot APIs exist, but does not establish Indian execution or suitable data-handling terms. The available information does not resolve those questions for every provider.
Return the image or use asynchronous delivery
Inline response
Returning PNG or JPEG bytes is convenient when captures are small and reliably fit the gateway’s response limits and deadline. Binary handling must be configured correctly in the chosen HTTP integration; base64 encoding can increase payload size.
Stored result
For bigger images or longer captures, save the output to object storage and return a reference. Define expiration and access controls for stored images, and decide whether the reference should be public, signed, or available only to an authenticated caller.
Asynchronous job
When capture duration is unpredictable, respond with a job identifier, run the browser capture separately, and provide status/result retrieval. This avoids making the client connection depend on browser startup, page readiness, and image transfer all completing within one synchronous request.

Cost, scaling, and reliability considerations
Browser-function cost depends on invocation count, execution duration, and configured memory. Storage and data transfer can add cost if images are persisted or delivered externally. Recalculate with the current AWS pricing for the target region, architecture, expected page mix, and capture mode; a monthly estimate without those workload assumptions is not meaningful.
Measure representative pages in the deployment region, including pages with slow scripts, large images, redirects, and consent dialogs. Track navigation failures, timeouts, function duration, memory use, output size, and concurrency. Set alarms and throttles around the limits that matter to your workload. AWS’s documented concurrency and request-rate defaults are capacity context, not evidence that a browser workload can sustain those rates.

- Browser executable not found: the deployment package may omit the Chromium binary or its path may not match the launch configuration. Verify the package contents and runtime/architecture compatibility.
- Function starts but capture times out: page readiness may wait on long-running network activity. Use a readiness condition suited to the target pages, set a bounded timeout, and consider asynchronous processing for slow sites.
- Empty or incomplete screenshot: the page may render content after navigation completes. Wait for a meaningful selector or a bounded delay, and test lazy-loaded content and full-page behavior.
- HTTP 4xx or 5xx from the target: the site may reject automated traffic, require authentication, or be unavailable from the function’s network path. Do not treat a failed navigation as a valid image; report a controlled error.
- Image response appears corrupted: the HTTP integration may be treating binary bytes as text. Configure binary response handling or return a base64-encoded body with the integration’s corresponding flag.
- Unexpected access to internal addresses: basic hostname validation may have missed DNS changes, redirects, or IP literal forms. Enforce destination checks at resolution and on redirects, backed by outbound network restrictions.
- Concurrency or throttling errors: request bursts may exceed account quotas or available capacity. Add queueing or rate controls and confirm current regional service quotas.
