In Chrome, reload after changing the preference; in Firefox, use its color-scheme controls and full-page screenshot tool. Check the rendered page before saving, because a site may not support dark styling.
Choose the right kind of dark mode
A dark browser theme changes the appearance of browser controls; it does not necessarily change the webpage. To change the page, ask the site to use its dark styles by emulating prefers-color-scheme: dark. Sites that do not provide dark styles may remain light unless you apply a generated dark treatment.
Chrome: emulate dark mode and capture the whole page

Open the page you want to capture, then open Chrome DevTools.

Open the Rendering tab. If it is not visible, open the DevTools More tools menu and select Rendering.

Under Emulate CSS media feature
prefers-color-scheme, choose prefers-color-scheme: dark. This tells a supporting site to use its authored dark styles. Chrome’s CSS media feature emulation guide documents this setting. -
Reload the page so its styles respond to the emulated preference.

To capture beyond the visible viewport, open Device Mode and select Capture a full size screenshot. Chrome’s Device Mode documentation describes the full-size capture command.

If the site has no dark theme
In the Rendering tab, enable Automatic dark mode to ask Chrome to generate a dark treatment for a light-themed page. This is distinct from simply emulating the preference: Chrome says Automatic dark mode also sets prefers-color-scheme to dark. The generated result may differ from a site’s intended design, so inspect the page before capture. See Chrome’s guide to automatic dark theme and other rendering effects.

Firefox: emulate the page color scheme and capture full-page

Open the page, then open Firefox DevTools and use the page inspector’s color-scheme controls to select dark mode. Mozilla documents emulation of light, dark, or no emulation in its page inspector guide.

Inspect the page to confirm the change. With no emulation, Firefox follows the operating system preference; emulating the same mode as the OS may not visibly change the page.

For a GUI capture, use Firefox’s screenshot tool and choose the full-page option. Alternatively, open the Web Console and run

Check the result before you save it

Verify the page itself is dark; a dark DevTools or browser theme is not proof that the webpage changed.

Look for unreadable text, low-contrast controls, images that did not load, and sections that remain light. Automatic darkening can produce a different result from a site-authored theme.

Wait for dynamic content and lazy-loaded images to appear. A full-page capture can include content outside the viewport, but it cannot guarantee that a page has finished loading or that every interactive section is visible.

If the page did not respond to dark preference emulation, reload once more and confirm the selected setting. If it still has no dark styles, try Chrome’s Automatic dark mode or capture the site’s light appearance rather than treating browser chrome as page styling.

Troubleshooting
The page stays light
Check that dark preference emulation is enabled for the webpage and reload it. A site without authored dark styles may not change; use Chrome Automatic dark mode if a generated treatment is acceptable.

The screenshot stops at the viewport
Use Chrome’s Capture a full size screenshot command in Device Mode, or Firefox’s full-page screenshot option or :screenshot filename.png --fullpage command.
The page looks different from its normal dark theme
Confirm whether you selected preference emulation or Chrome’s Automatic dark mode. The latter generates a dark treatment and can alter a light-themed page in ways its designers did not specify.
Firefox shows no visible change after emulation
If the emulated color scheme matches your operating system’s preference, the page may already be rendering in that mode. Compare with the opposite setting or inspect the page’s appearance directly.
