Set the browser’s color-scheme preference before capturing the page. In Playwright, use colorScheme: 'dark' or colorScheme: 'light' on the browser context, or call page.emulateMedia() for an open page. In Chrome DevTools, choose light or dark under Rendering’s prefers-color-scheme emulation and refresh before taking the screenshot.
Capture a screenshot in Playwright
For a repeatable capture, set the scheme on the browser context before opening the page. The browser then renders the page with that prefers-color-scheme value when you navigate and take the screenshot.
Complete example: dark mode

})();Save this as a JavaScript file in a project where Playwright is installed, then run it with Node.js. Change 'dark' to 'light' to capture the light preference. Remove fullPage: true if you want the visible viewport rather than the full page.
Change the scheme on an open page
If the page is already open, emulate the media preference before capturing:

Capture both schemes for comparison
Use explicit settings and distinct filenames. Keep the browser, viewport, page state, and other capture settings consistent so the color scheme is the meaningful difference between captures.

- Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools.
- Open the Rendering tools. If the Rendering panel is not visible, open it through the DevTools command menu and search for “Show Rendering.”
- In the Rendering panel, find the
prefers-color-schemeemulation control and select light or dark. - Refresh the page so it renders with the selected preference.
- Capture the screenshot using the method appropriate to your task.

What the color-scheme setting changes
The setting changes the browser’s emulated prefers-color-scheme media feature. It does not force every site to adopt a different design. A visible theme change depends on the page responding to that preference; a site may instead use its own theme control or saved preference.

Troubleshoot an unchanged or unexpected screenshot
- The page looks the same in light and dark captures: Check whether the page’s styles respond to
prefers-color-scheme. Also check for a site-level theme control or stored preference that determines the appearance. - The screenshot shows the old scheme: Apply emulation before navigation in Playwright, or refresh after changing the Rendering control in DevTools.
- The two captures are difficult to compare: Use fixed scheme values and filenames, and hold the viewport, browser, and page state constant.
- You used
no-preference: Replace it with'light','dark', ornull, as appropriate; Playwright documentsno-preferenceas deprecated.
