Wait for the route’s actual content—not just the click or document load—before taking the screenshot. In Playwright, a dependable sequence is to trigger the route change, wait for the expected URL when it changes, wait for a destination-specific element or application state, and then call page.screenshot().
Capture only after the target route is ready
A screenshot records what the browser has rendered at that moment. It does not wait for a single-page application (SPA) to finish changing routes or fetching the content you want to show. The right readiness check depends on the page and the image: it might be a destination heading, a results indicator, a known value, or the disappearance of a loading state.
For a route reached by clicking a link, wait for both the route transition and the UI state you intend to capture:

Choose the right route-transition pattern
Open the target URL directly
Use page.goto() for a known destination, then wait for a route-specific UI condition before capture:

A modern app may still fetch data or render visible content afterward, so goto() completing does not by itself establish that the screenshot target is ready (Playwright navigation guide).

Trigger a route change with an action
After a click or other action, use waitForURL() if the route changes the URL, then check the content that matters. Waiting for both prevents a matching URL from being mistaken for proof that asynchronous route data has appeared.

Some apps update content without changing the URL. In that case, skip the URL wait and wait for an application-specific change, such as a destination heading, a changed status label, or a result value. History API URL changes are treated as navigation by Playwright’s navigation APIs, but a URL match still does not prove the route’s asynchronous content has rendered (Playwright Page API).

Make the readiness condition specific
Use a signal that belongs to the destination state and corresponds to what must be visible in the image. Prefer a result row, route-specific heading, or completed-state indicator over a generic container that existed on the previous screen. If the screenshot depends on data, wait for a value or state that indicates that data has arrived; merely seeing the page shell may be too early.
Playwright’s navigation guidance notes that pages can perform meaningful work after load, including lazy fetching and UI updates. Its API documentation discourages networkidle as a general testing readiness criterion and recommends web assertions to assess page state (navigation guide; Page API). A background poll, analytics request, or persistent connection can make network idleness unrelated to whether the target content is ready.

Use Puppeteer if it is already in your project
Puppeteer also supports page and element screenshots. For an app-specific readiness condition, use page.waitForFunction() to wait until a predicate in the page context becomes truthy, then capture the page or a selected element. Tie the predicate to the intended visible state rather than an arbitrary delay.

Pick capture scope after readiness
Once the route state is ready, choose whether the image should cover the page or just the relevant component. Playwright’s fullPage: true captures the full page; the default captures the viewport. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide documents both page and element screenshot workflows (Puppeteer screenshot guide). For a result panel or card, an element capture can avoid including unrelated page content.
Troubleshoot premature or unreliable captures
- The screenshot shows the old route or a loading shell: the capture likely ran after the action but before route data or rendering finished. Wait for the expected URL when applicable and a destination-specific state.
loadcompleted, but content is missing: document load does not guarantee later client-side fetches and rendering have finished. Add a condition for the visible content.networkidlenever arrives or arrives at the wrong time: ongoing background work can make idleness a poor proxy. Prefer a web assertion or app-specific condition, consistent with Playwright’s guidance.- The wait passes immediately on the old page: the selector may be generic or already present. Wait for destination-specific text, a changed value, or another state that distinguishes the new route.
- A fixed sleep is flaky or slow: a delay may be too short on a slow run and waste time on a fast one. Await the state the screenshot actually requires instead.
- The URL changed but the screenshot is still incomplete: URL matching confirms location, not necessarily completion of route data or rendering. Follow it with a content readiness check.
