To capture an HTML link as a PNG, open the link’s destination in a browser and save a screenshot of the rendered page. The link itself is just a reference to a URL; it is the page that opens at that URL—not the anchor text or raw HTML—that you capture. You can save only the visible browser area, the entire scrollable page, or a single element.
Choose what you want in the PNG
Before capturing, decide how much of the destination page you need. A screenshot of the browser viewport shows what is visible without scrolling. A full-page screenshot extends down the page, while an element screenshot crops to a particular part of the page, such as a chart or article. These produce different images, so choose based on how the PNG will be used.
- Visible area: Use this for a page as it appears in a browser window. It is usually the simplest option, but content below the fold will not be included.
- Full page: Use this when the image should include the page’s scrollable content. It can be much taller than a viewport capture, and some pages may change their layout or load more content as you scroll.
- One element: Use this when you need a focused image of a particular page component rather than the surrounding page.
Playwright describes a full-page screenshot as the full scrollable page rendered as though it fit on a very tall screen. Its screenshot API also supports capturing an element. Playwright’s screenshot guide shows the basic patterns.
Capture the link’s destination manually
For a one-off image, use your browser’s built-in screenshot or capture feature if it has one, or use the operating system’s screenshot tool. Open the link first, navigate to the destination, and frame the content you want. If the browser offers a full-page capture or an export format choice, select the option that matches your goal and choose PNG. Browser menus and screenshot features differ, so consult the help for your specific browser if you cannot find them.

- Open the HTML link in the browser. If it is in a page, follow it; if you can copy its URL, paste that address into the browser.
- Wait until the part of the destination page you need is visible and has finished changing.
- Use the browser’s screenshot feature or your operating system’s screen capture. Choose a full-page option if you need scrollable content and one is available.
- Save or export the image with a
.pngfilename, or choose PNG in the export dialog.
A basic screen capture may include browser chrome, other windows, or overlays. If you need a clean, repeatable capture without those extras, browser automation gives you control over the page and output.
Automate PNG capture with Playwright
Playwright can open the destination URL and save a page screenshot directly to a PNG file. Its documentation shows page.goto() followed by page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' }); the extension identifies the output format. The following Node.js example captures the visible browser viewport.
- Install Node.js if it is not already available on your system.
- In a new project folder, run
npm init -y, thennpm install playwright. - Save the following as
capture.cjs. Replace the example URL with the link destination you want to capture. - Run
node capture.cjs. Playwright writesscreenshot.pngto the current folder.

Capture the full scrollable page
Set fullPage: true when you want the full page rather than only the current viewport:

It does not mean that every page’s lazy-loaded or interactive content is guaranteed to appear: the page must expose that content in a state the browser can render before capture. For pages that load content on scroll, first make the relevant content appear, then take the screenshot.
Capture one element
When only one component is needed, locate it and call screenshot() on the locator. Replace the selector with one that matches the target on the page:

If the selector does not match anything, the capture cannot produce the intended element image. The Playwright guide includes element screenshot examples.
Set format, dimensions, and image scale
For PNG, use a path ending in .png. Playwright supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP, and documents that screenshot type can be inferred from the filename extension. Its API also distinguishes CSS-pixel sizing from device-pixel sizing: CSS scale targets one screenshot pixel per CSS pixel, while device scale can produce a higher-resolution image. Higher-resolution output can help with fine detail, but it also increases the image dimensions and file size.

Choose the viewport to control the page layout before capture, as in the runnable example’s 1280 × 900 viewport. A different viewport may cause responsive sites to display different navigation, text wrapping, or columns. Keep the viewport consistent when you need comparable captures. Wait for the visual state you actually need
Navigation completing does not prove that every visual element is ready. A page may render its main document before images, ads, charts, or application data have finished loading. Decide which content matters, and wait for that content or element before capturing it. For example, if the chart is the deliverable, wait for the chart selector rather than relying only on the fact that the URL opened.
There is no single wait rule established here that works for every website. A fixed delay may be too short on a slow page and unnecessarily long on a fast one; a network becoming idle does not necessarily mean a site’s visual work is complete. Prefer a condition tied to the content you need, and check the saved PNG when changing a capture workflow.
Troubleshoot common capture problems
- The image is a blank page or shows an error: Check that the link resolves to the intended destination and that the page has rendered before capture. Try opening the URL manually to distinguish a destination problem from a script or selector problem.
- The PNG cuts off content: The default page screenshot covers the viewport. Use
fullPage: truefor a full-page capture, or use an element screenshot for a specific component. - Images or dynamic content are missing: Wait for the particular content or selector to appear before taking the screenshot. If the site loads content only after scrolling, make that content load before capture.
- The element screenshot fails or targets the wrong thing: Verify the selector against the destination page and ensure it identifies the intended element. A selector copied from a different page state may no longer match.
- The result is JPEG or WebP instead of PNG: Check the output path or export setting. For Playwright, use a filename ending in
.png. - The output looks too small or too large: Check the viewport and screenshot scale. Viewport dimensions affect responsive layout; scale affects output pixel density.
- The page looks different from your browser: Confirm that the destination is the same and compare viewport dimensions and page state. A site can render differently at different widths or before its dynamic content is ready.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
A manual capture is straightforward for an occasional page. Automation is useful when the same task must be repeated, when you need a fixed viewport or full-page output, or when screenshots need to be saved by a script. Capture time and success depend on the destination page, its content, and the state you wait for; the documentation does not establish a universal speed or a guarantee that every site can be captured.

Full-page images can have many more pixels than viewport images, and device-scale output can increase pixel dimensions further. If file size matters, capture only the needed area and choose a suitable scale. When using automation, make sure the script’s output location is writable and that the screenshot filename is not unintentionally reused where you need to keep earlier captures.
