The shortcut depends on your operating system. On Windows, press Windows + Shift + S for an area, window or full-screen capture; on macOS use Command + Shift + 3 or Command + Shift + 4; on Chromebook use Ctrl + Show windows; and in GNOME Linux press Print. Each method can either save an image, copy it to the clipboard or open editing controls.
Choose the capture you need
- Full screen: captures every visible display and is useful for desktop-wide errors or complete workflows.
- Window: captures one application without unrelated windows or desktop content.
- Area or region: lets you drag around a control, dialog, chart or other detail.
- Delayed capture: gives you time to open a menu or hover state that would disappear when you press a shortcut.
- Recording: use a screen recording when a still image cannot explain a sequence of actions.
Before capturing, close private information, move the pointer if it obscures the detail, and choose the display that contains the content you want. On a multi-monitor setup, full-screen commands may capture the active display or all displays depending on the operating system and version.
Windows 10 and Windows 11
Capture a region, window or screen with Snipping Tool
- Press Windows + Shift + S. A Snipping Tool overlay appears.
- Choose the capture mode: rectangular area, freeform area, window or full screen.
- Select the area or window. The image is placed in Snipping Tool for editing.
- Click the save button, choose a folder and select an image format. You can also copy or share the result from the Snipping Tool window.
This is the best general-purpose Windows method because you choose exactly what is included rather than cropping a whole desktop afterward. Microsoft describes Snipping Tool as capturing all or part of your PC screen.
Copy the entire screen to the clipboard
Press Print Screen (also labeled PrtSc, PrtScn or PrntScrn). Windows copies the entire screen to the clipboard. Open Paint, an email, a chat or an image editor and press Ctrl + V to paste it, then save or send the image.

If your keyboard has no Print Screen key, Microsoft documents Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar for applicable devices. Laptop keyboards vary, so check the key legends and the manufacturer’s documentation rather than assuming every model uses the same Fn combination. A USB keyboard with a clearly labeled Print Screen key can be convenient, but built-in Windows shortcuts normally eliminate the need to buy hardware.
Capture a menu with a delay
- Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
- Choose the delay control and select a delay before the capture.
- Open the menu, tooltip or hover state you need.
- When the delay ends, select the required area and save the result.
Edit and save
The Snipping Tool window lets you annotate a capture before saving. If you used Print Screen, paste the clipboard image into Paint or another editor first. Clipboard captures are not permanent: copying another item replaces the screenshot, so save it before continuing with other work.
macOS
Capture the entire screen
Press Command + Shift + 3. macOS saves a screenshot file, normally on the desktop unless you have changed the Screenshot settings.
Capture a selected area
Press Command + Shift + 4, then drag around the region. Release the pointer to capture it. While selecting, you can adjust the rectangle before releasing.

Press Command + Shift + 5 to open the Screenshot controls. Apple provides this Screenshot app in macOS Mojave 10.14 and later. The controls let you choose the entire screen, a window or a selected portion, set a destination and start a screen recording. This is the simplest way to change where files are saved or to record instead of taking a still image.

Copy instead of saving
Hold Control with a screenshot shortcut when you need the image copied to the clipboard. You can then paste it into a document, message or editor. You can also use the screenshot thumbnail menu that appears after capture to copy or mark up the image. Some protected applications, including Apple TV, may block window screenshots; a black or missing capture in that app is a content restriction rather than a broken shortcut.
Chromebook and ChromeOS
Full screen
Press Ctrl + Show windows. The Show windows key is the key on the top row that looks like a rectangle with lines beside it.
Selected area
Press Ctrl + Shift + Show windows, then drag over the area to capture. ChromeOS opens the result through its built-in capture and Gallery workflow.

Open the ChromeOS screen-capture interface from the shelf or Quick Settings when you prefer visible controls. It supports screenshots and screen recording. Google documents alternate key mappings for external Windows and Mac keyboards, plus a tablet method using the Power button or the Screen Capture control. If the keyboard shortcut does not work, use that on-screen control and select the mode there.
GNOME Linux
Use the GNOME screenshot overlay
Press Print to launch GNOME’s screenshot interface. GNOME documents Alt + Print for the focused window and Shift + Print for full-screen or area capture. GNOME 42 added an interactive overlay where you choose an area, window or screen and switch between an image and a recording. GNOME’s release notes describe the overlay as launching when you press Print Screen.

Exact save-folder behavior and shortcut assignments can vary by distribution and version. KDE, Cinnamon, Xfce and other desktop environments may use different tools or bindings, so open that environment’s screenshot utility or keyboard settings if GNOME shortcuts do nothing.
Save, copy and find the file
When the image is in the clipboard
A clipboard-first capture has not necessarily created a file. Paste it into Paint, Preview, an email, chat or an image editor and save it in PNG or another required format. If you copy something else first, the unsaved screenshot is replaced.
When the operating system saved a file
Use the notification, thumbnail or Gallery result to open the image and reveal its location. macOS commonly places screenshots on the desktop; ChromeOS exposes them through its capture/Gallery workflow; Linux location depends on the distribution and desktop settings. If you cannot find a file, search for recently modified PNG files and check the destination configured in the capture utility.
Choose a useful format
PNG is usually best for text, interfaces and diagrams because it preserves sharp edges. JPEG can be smaller for photographic content but may blur fine interface text. Use the editor’s crop, annotation and redaction tools before sharing credentials, personal data or customer information.
When a still screenshot is not enough
Use the built-in recording mode when you need to show a sequence, a hover state, an animation or a reproducible bug. Windows Snipping Tool, the macOS Screenshot app, ChromeOS Capture and GNOME’s overlay document recording features. Keep recordings short, narrate the important action and trim unrelated desktop activity before sharing.

The shortcut does nothing
- Confirm the operating system and use its shortcut, not one from another platform.
- On laptops, try the Fn layer or an external keyboard if the key is shared with another function.
- Check keyboard settings for a remapped shortcut or a utility that intercepts Print Screen.
- On Linux, verify which desktop environment is running; GNOME bindings are not universal.
The image is black or missing an application
Protected video and some secure applications can block capture. Try the application’s permitted export or recording feature; do not treat a black result as proof that the operating-system shortcut is faulty.
A menu closes before capture
Use Snipping Tool’s delay on Windows, the Screenshot controls on macOS or the equivalent delayed/on-screen control in your desktop environment. Open the menu during the countdown.

The screenshot is not where expected
Determine whether your method copied to the clipboard or saved a file. Paste clipboard captures into an editor immediately. For file captures, open the capture notification, Gallery, thumbnail or Screenshot settings to inspect the destination.
Text looks blurry
Capture a smaller region at the display’s native scale, use PNG, and avoid enlarging a compressed JPEG. For a web page, capture at a larger viewport or retina scale with ScreenshotNeo rather than enlarging a low-resolution image afterward.

FAQ
Can I screenshot only one monitor?
Choose the window or region mode and select content on the required display. Full-screen behavior across multiple monitors differs by platform and version, so region or window capture is the predictable choice.

Use a delayed capture, move the pointer to reveal the tooltip during the countdown, and select the area after the delay expires.
Can screenshots include the mouse pointer?
Default still-image shortcuts commonly omit the pointer. If the pointer is essential, use the capture utility’s pointer or recording setting when your platform provides one, or annotate the saved image.
