What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Open the page in your browser, then choose the capture type that matches your goal: a visible-viewport image for what is on screen, a selected region or page part for one section, or a full-page image for everything below the fold. Chrome/Chromium, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge all include built-in website screenshot tools, so you do not need to buy software. For a repeatable, automated workflow, ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL through one API request after removing common consent banners, popups, and chat widgets.
Choose the kind of website screenshot you need
“A screenshot of a website” can mean several different outputs. Decide this before opening a menu, because each mode captures a different amount of the page.
| Capture type | What it includes | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Visible viewport | Only the page area currently displayed in the browser window | You need to show an on-screen detail, state, or interaction |
| Selected region or page part | A rectangle you draw or an automatically detected element/section | You want to focus attention on one component |
| Full page | The page from the top through content below the fold | You need a complete article, landing page, or document in one image |
| Responsive/device viewport | A screenshot rendered at configured dimensions such as a phone or tablet width | You are documenting a responsive layout or a specific viewport size |
A simulated device viewport changes the browser’s layout dimensions; it is not a guarantee that the result behaves exactly like a physical phone. Dynamic ads, carousels, animations, consent dialogs, and lazy-loaded images can also change what appears, so check the saved image before sharing it.
Capture a specific website in Chrome or Chromium
Chrome’s documented screenshot commands are in DevTools’ Device Toolbar. The menu distinguishes a viewport capture from a full-size page capture.
- Open the exact page. Navigate to the URL and wait until the content you need is visible. Sign in or set the page state first if the screenshot must show a logged-in view.
- Open DevTools. Use the browser’s DevTools command, then enable the Device Toolbar. In the toolbar you can drag the viewport edges or enter width and height values. Device presets, device type, orientation, and device-pixel-ratio controls are available there.
- Set the layout, if required. Choose a preset or enter dimensions for a desktop, tablet, or mobile-style view. Select the orientation and device type that match your documentation.
- Open More options. In the Device Toolbar, open More options and choose Capture screenshot for the viewport currently shown.
- Capture the whole page instead. Choose Capture a full size screenshot. Chrome captures content outside the current viewport as one image.
- Inspect the result. Open the downloaded image and verify that the intended viewport, scroll position, fonts, images, and page state are present.
Use the ordinary capture for a visible browser view; use full size when readers must see content below the fold. If a page uses lazy loading, scroll through it first so images have a chance to load before taking the full-page capture.

Capture a specific website in Firefox
Firefox’s Screenshot tool supports a dragged selection, an automatically highlighted page part, the visible area, and the entire page.
- Open the website.
- Right-click an empty part of the page and choose Take Screenshot. You can also use Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Choose one of the capture modes: drag a region, select an automatically highlighted page part, choose Save full page, or choose Save visible.
- Choose Download to save an image file or Copy to place it on the clipboard.
Firefox’s selection controls are keyboard accessible. On Wayland, Mozilla notes that moving the crosshair with the pointer does not work; use the available keyboard controls or another capture mode. Firefox may collect interaction data such as whether you used Copy or Save full page, but Mozilla says it does not collect the URL or details of the captured image. Technical and interaction-data collection can be disabled in Firefox settings.
Capture a specific website in Microsoft Edge
- Open the target page.
- Open Screenshot from the right-click menu, the Edge Settings menu, or with Ctrl+Shift+S.
- Choose a full-page capture or a selected area.
- Optionally mark up the image, then copy it or save it to a file.
Edge documents support for preserving moving content such as GIFs or carousels while capturing, which can help when a particular frame matters. Microsoft cautions that feature availability and functionality can vary by device type, market, and browser version, so verify the labels in the Edge version installed on your system.
Make the screenshot represent the right page state
Handle consent banners and overlays
Dismiss cookie notices, newsletter dialogs, sign-in prompts, chat bubbles, and other overlays before capturing. If a dialog is part of the state you are documenting, leave it open deliberately and include that fact in the file name or notes.

Load content below the fold
Long pages often load images only as you approach them. Scroll from top to bottom once, wait for images and fonts, then return to the desired position or run the full-page command. A blank image area usually means the resource had not loaded when the capture occurred.
Freeze dynamic content
Pause videos and carousels where possible. For a reproducible result, note the time, viewport dimensions, zoom level, and whether you were signed in. Animated content can differ between two captures seconds apart.
Check privacy and sensitive data
Review the complete image for personal information, access tokens, email addresses, internal URLs, and notifications. Crop or redact before publishing. A full-page image can include footer links, account details, or hidden-looking sections you did not notice in the viewport.

When a browser screenshot is not enough
Built-in tools are ideal for an occasional, human-reviewed image. They become awkward when you must capture many URLs, repeat the same viewport and cleanup rules, generate PDFs, or run the process in a build pipeline. An automated service can make those settings explicit and return a consistent response.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Send a URL and it returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
The API supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, 12 device presets or any viewport, retina scale, PDF paper size/margins/landscape/page ranges, HTML/CSS-to-image, custom JavaScript and CSS, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, waits for a selector/delay/network idle, blocking ads/trackers/requests/resource types, custom headers/cookies/user agents/Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, image resizing, TTL-based caching, signed links for public <img> tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, an OpenAPI specification, and familiar parameter names for easier migration. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Troubleshooting website screenshots
The capture contains only the visible area
You selected a viewport command. In Chrome, return to DevTools’ Device Toolbar and choose Capture a full size screenshot; in Firefox or Edge, choose Save full page or the full-page option.

The page is cut off or elements overlap
Use the page’s actual scroll container, not just the browser window, and wait for fonts, images, and scripts. A very long page can exceed image-dimension limits; capture logical sections or export a PDF when one enormous bitmap is impractical.
Images are missing
Scroll through the page first to trigger lazy loading, wait for network activity to settle, and capture again. Check that an ad blocker, privacy setting, or corporate proxy is not blocking the image host.

The mobile layout is wrong
Set the responsive width and height before capture. In Chrome, verify the Device Toolbar’s device type, orientation, preset, and device-pixel-ratio settings. Remember that emulation is not identical to physical hardware.
A consent dialog or chat widget hides the subject
Dismiss or close it before using a native browser tool. If you need repeatable cleanup across many URLs, use ScreenshotNeo’s consent, popup, and widget removal controls.

The output changes between runs
Dynamic content, personalization, location, timezone, animation, and authentication can all change the page. Record the capture settings, pause motion, use a consistent profile, and set the same viewport and locale each time. For automated jobs, configure headers, cookies, user agent, timezone, and geolocation explicitly.
An automated request is not billed or returns an error
Inspect ScreenshotNeo’s X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. A bot check, CAPTCHA, blank page, timeout, failed load, or cache hit is identified in the response and is not billed. Confirm that the access key is valid, URL-encode query values, allow up to 90 seconds for slow pages, and check the HTTP status before writing the response body to an image file.
Which method should you use?
- One visible detail: use Chrome’s Capture screenshot, Firefox Save visible, or Edge’s selected-area capture.
- An entire page: use Chrome’s Capture a full size screenshot, Firefox Save full page, or Edge’s full-page option.
- A highlighted section: use Firefox’s automatically highlighted page part or draw a region in Firefox or Edge.
- A mobile-style view: configure the responsive/device viewport before capturing.
- Many URLs or repeatable cleanup: use ScreenshotNeo’s API or MCP tools and inspect the verdict and billing headers.
Frequently asked questions
Can I screenshot a website without installing an extension?
Yes. Chrome/Chromium DevTools, Firefox Screenshot, and Edge Screenshot provide the capture modes described above without a separate purchase or extension.
What is the difference between a full-page and a full-screen screenshot?
A full-page screenshot contains the webpage’s content beyond the current scroll position. A full-screen or viewport screenshot contains only what is currently displayed in the browser window.
Can a screenshot prove how a site looked on a real phone?
No. A configured responsive viewport documents the layout at chosen dimensions, but browser emulation does not guarantee identical rendering, hardware behavior, or network conditions on a physical phone.
Why should I keep the original URL and settings?
They let you reproduce the capture and explain differences caused by viewport, login state, location, time, animation, or page changes. Store that metadata separately from any screenshot containing sensitive information.
