To capture a page that requires login, sign in through the site’s normal flow in a Selenium WebDriver session, open the protected page in that same session, wait for an element that confirms the page has loaded, then call driver.save_screenshot("screenshot.png"). The example below uses Python and saves a PNG of the current browser window.
Capture the page in the same session you use to log in
Selenium’s browser session holds the site’s active login state. Complete the authorized login flow in that session, then navigate to the protected URL without quitting the browser or creating a new WebDriver instance in between. Replace the example URLs, field names, button selector, and page locator with ones that match the site.

driver.quit()There is one formatting correction if copying this block: remove the extra leading space before driver = webdriver.Chrome() so it aligns with try. Keep credentials out of shared source code; for a real script, load them from a secure configuration source rather than committing them to a repository. The sample uses placeholder credentials and selectors, not a universal login recipe.
Wait for proof that the authenticated page is ready
A successful navigation does not necessarily mean the page’s useful content is ready. Selenium’s navigation commands wait for a readyState value—by default, complete—but that state covers assets defined in the HTML, not later changes made by JavaScript. The Selenium Project explains: “The readyState only concerns itself with loading assets defined in the HTML, but loaded JavaScript assets often result in changes to the site, and elements that need to be interacted with may not yet be on the page when the code is ready to execute the next Selenium command.” See Selenium’s waiting strategies.

The example’s explicit wait looks for a visible main h1. Choose a selector that is distinctive to the expected protected page, not merely an element that also appears on the login, error, or access-denied screen. Selenium’s explicit waits let the script proceed when a specified condition is met; a fixed sleep may be too short on a slow load or unnecessarily long on a fast one. Avoid mixing implicit and explicit waits, which Selenium warns can produce unpredictable timing.
Choose the screenshot scope and output
driver.save_screenshot("screenshot.png") saves a PNG of the current browser window. Use a clear output path so the file is easy to locate, and check that the resulting image shows the expected page rather than a login prompt or error.

Selenium also documents taking a screenshot of an individual element. Choose that when you need a particular component without the surrounding browser-page context; use the window screenshot when the visible page context matters. The cited Selenium documentation does not establish a cross-browser guarantee for full-page screenshots, so verify the behavior of the browser and driver you use before relying on a full-page capture.
Handle login-specific requirements safely
- MFA or other verification: Implement the site’s authorized verification steps as part of the login flow. The example cannot know the site’s authentication protocol.
- Session continuity: Keep authentication, navigation, waiting, and capture in the same active WebDriver session.
- Cookies: Selenium exposes cookies visible to the current WebDriver session, and driver APIs include cookie-addition methods. Cookie reuse is site-specific, not a universal shortcut around login; domain, path, expiry, security attributes, and the site’s authentication design can all matter. Prefer the site’s intended login flow.
- Permission: Use an account you are authorized to access and follow the site’s applicable rules for automation and capture.
Troubleshooting
- The screenshot shows the login page: The login may have failed, the site may have redirected, or the script may have opened the protected page in a different session. Confirm the authenticated state before navigating and wait for a page-specific element after navigation.
- The wait times out: Check that the selector exists on the authenticated page and that the expected page actually loaded. A changed selector, slow JavaScript-rendered content, an error page, or an incomplete login can all prevent the condition from becoming true.
- The screenshot is blank or missing expected content: A navigation reaching
readyState == completedoes not prove later page updates have finished. Wait for a meaningful visible element, and inspect the page state if that wait does not succeed. - The output file is not where expected: Use an explicit path, such as
"/path/to/output/screenshot.png", and ensure the process can write to that location. - Cookie-based reuse does not authenticate: Do not assume a copied cookie is portable. Check whether the cookie is valid for the target domain and path and whether it remains within its validity period; when uncertain, use the normal login flow.
