Crop and save the result. This captures what your screen displays—not necessarily the video’s original, full-resolution frame.
Capture a YouTube screenshot on Windows
For a clean still, use Snipping Tool’s rectangular capture rather than photographing the whole desktop.
- Pause the video at the target moment. If needed, use the left and right arrow keys to adjust the moment in small increments; player behavior can vary.
- Move the pointer away from the video and wait for the YouTube controls to fade.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. In the capture overlay, choose rectangular snip if it is not already selected.
- Drag around the video image. Select the Snipping Tool notification to edit the capture, then use Ctrl + S to save or Ctrl + C to copy it.
Snipping Tool can also capture a window, the full screen, or a freeform area. Its delay options, documented as 1–5 seconds, can help when you need time to move the pointer or compose the capture. Microsoft’s instructions are at Use Snipping Tool to capture screenshots.
Other Windows shortcuts
- Print Screen may capture the screen or copy it to the clipboard, depending on your Windows configuration.
- Alt + Print Screen captures the active window on many Windows installations.
- Windows + Print Screen commonly saves a full-screen image automatically.
These alternatives may include browser chrome or other content, so check the result before sharing it. Windows + Shift + R starts a video snip; it is not the shortcut for a still screenshot.

Capture a YouTube screenshot on a Mac
Select just the video area
- Pause the video and wait for the controls to fade.
- Press Shift + Command + 4.
- Drag over the video frame and release the mouse or trackpad.
- Find the saved screenshot on the desktop by default, unless you have changed the destination.
Use the screenshot controls
Press Shift + Command + 5 to open macOS screenshot and screen-recording controls. Choose a still-capture option for the entire screen, a window, or a selected portion, then capture the video area. The panel also offers recording controls; choose a still capture when you want a single image. Apple’s guide is Take a screenshot on your Mac.
Enter full screen only if it makes the displayed video larger. Move the pointer to a corner while the controls fade, and select the video rectangle rather than the entire browser window.
Capture a YouTube screenshot on an iPhone or iPad
The button combination depends on the device:
- Face ID models: press the Side button and Volume Up at the same time.
- Home-button models: press the Side or Top button and the Home button at the same time.
Pause the video, rotate to landscape if it gives you a larger image, and wait for the controls to disappear before pressing the buttons. Tap the screenshot thumbnail to crop or mark up the image. Button layouts vary by model; use the combination that matches your hardware.
Capture a YouTube screenshot on Android
- Pause the video and wait for the controls to disappear.
- Press Power + Volume Down at the same time.
- Tap the screenshot preview to crop or edit, then save or share it.
Google documents this as a common Android method, but the exact behavior can vary by manufacturer. If it does not work, holding the Power button may show a Screenshot option; otherwise, check your phone manufacturer’s support instructions. Some devices offer a three-finger gesture, but it is not universal. A restricted or protected video may also produce a blank or blocked capture.

On a phone, avoid tapping the player immediately before taking the screenshot: the tap can bring up controls. Landscape orientation may make the frame larger, but buttons can be harder to press in that position.
Capture a YouTube screenshot on a Chromebook
- Full screen: press Ctrl + Show Windows. Google documents Ctrl + F5 as an equivalent on some external keyboards.
- Partial capture: press Shift + Ctrl + Show Windows, then select and drag around the video frame. This shortcut also opens Screen Capture controls, where you can choose a capture type.
By default, Chromebook screenshots are saved in Downloads and copied to the clipboard. Keyboard layouts can differ, particularly with an external keyboard. See Google’s guides for taking a screenshot and using Screen Capture.
Get a clean frame without YouTube controls
- Pause at approximately the right moment. Use the left and right arrow keys to adjust in small increments where the player supports them; there is no universal YouTube screenshot or frame-by-frame button.
- Move the pointer outside the video and stop moving it. Wait several seconds for the title, timeline, play button, and other overlays to fade.
- Use full-screen playback if it increases the displayed video size.
- Capture only the video rectangle. Crop away player borders or black bars if they are part of the player layout, but retain bars that are part of the original video composition.
- Turn captions off for a clean image, if they are not needed. Captions visible on screen will appear in a normal screenshot.
If controls keep appearing, do not tap or click the player again just before capture. Move the pointer to the browser toolbar or a screen edge, wait, and try a delayed capture where your tool supports one. If the screenshot shortcut changes focus or the frame, try another capture method or use a short screen recording only when a still capture cannot preserve the moment.
Improve screenshot quality
- Make the player as large as practical before capturing and choose the highest playback quality available to you.
- Capture the video region at its displayed size rather than taking a tiny player image and enlarging it afterward. A screenshot cannot restore detail that was not rendered on screen.
- Use PNG for text, diagrams, and interface details. JPEG can create a smaller file, but may add compression artifacts.
- Avoid browser zoom if it unexpectedly resamples or crops the video. Check the capture before relying on it.
A full-screen capture is convenient but includes more unwanted content. A region capture gives you a cleaner image but requires accurate selection. A browser extension may make frequent captures more convenient; it does not necessarily provide more detail than a native screenshot.

Screen capture or exact frame extraction?
Use a screen capture for a quick still
A built-in screenshot tool is suited to notes, sharing a moment, or retaining the video alongside visible context. It records the displayed player output, so overlays, scaling, or display resolution can affect the result.
Use frame extraction for precise work
Editors, researchers, or people making repeated captures may need more precise frame selection than a screen capture provides. A local media player such as VLC can capture a frame from a video file. This is a different workflow from screenshotting YouTube playback: use it only with a file you own, have permission to download, or otherwise obtained lawfully. Do not treat a frame-extraction tool as a way to obtain a YouTube video without authorization.
Optional browser extensions
A Chrome Web Store listing for Screenshot YouTube describes a button for saving the current YouTube frame or copying it to the clipboard. Extensions can be convenient if you capture frames often, but they are not necessary for one-off screenshots and are not automatically higher quality than native tools.
Before installing an extension, review its publisher, requested permissions, recent reviews, update history, and privacy policy. Availability, compatibility, permissions, and pricing can change. Firefox also has a built-in screenshot tool, opened with Ctrl + Shift + S on Windows and Linux or Command + Shift + S on macOS; see Take screenshots in Firefox.

Troubleshoot black, blurry, or obstructed captures
The play button, timeline, or title is visible
The player may still have focus, the pointer may be over the video, or controls may not have timed out. Pause, move the pointer away, and wait several seconds. A delayed capture can help; cropping is a fallback if the controls remain at the edge of the image.
The frame changes while you capture it
Pause before opening the capture tool, and avoid clicking the player immediately beforehand. Try the operating system’s rectangular capture or Firefox’s screenshot tool. If the moment cannot be held still, a short screen recording followed by a still capture can help, though it is slower and produces a second-generation copy.
The screenshot is blurry
Increase the player size and playback quality, then capture at the displayed size. Do not upscale a small image and expect additional detail. The source video itself may be low resolution.

The screenshot is black or blank
A black result can stem from graphics acceleration, a protected playback restriction, a capture layer that is not composited normally, or a temporary rendering failure; it does not by itself prove that YouTube blocked the screenshot.
- Try a rectangular region capture instead of a window capture.
- Try another browser and the operating system’s built-in screenshot utility.
- Try full-screen playback, then test whether other video sites or local videos capture normally.
- If the problem appears related to browser graphics acceleration, disable and re-enable that setting, then restart the browser.
- If capture is deliberately restricted, respect the restriction rather than attempting to bypass it.
Black bars or captions appear
Crop bars that belong to the player layout, not bars that are part of the video itself. Captions are visible screen content: turn them off for a clean image or leave them on when they matter to the purpose of the screenshot.
Can you publish or reuse a YouTube screenshot?
Capturing an image for private reference is different from publishing it or using it commercially. YouTube explains that original videos are generally protected by copyright and that copyright owners control how their work is used and distributed. Possible lawful bases include permission, a Creative Commons license, public-domain status, or a relevant copyright exception. See YouTube’s copyright overview.
