Set locale on the Playwright browser context before creating or navigating the page, then capture it with page.screenshot(). For example, de-DE emulates German as used in Germany; it does not guarantee that every site will translate its content.
Capture a screenshot using a locale
This standalone Playwright script creates a context with the requested locale before opening the page:

})();Replace de-DE with the locale tag your scenario needs and the example URL with the site to capture. The context option applies to pages created in that context. Playwright documents locale emulation in its emulation guide, and the Page API documents screenshot options.
What locale does—and what it does not
The locale is a browser-emulation setting. A site may use browser locale when choosing language or regional formatting, but locale alone does not force a translation. The page may instead rely on its own language selector, URL, saved preferences, account state, or application behavior. Inspect the rendered result for the target site rather than assuming the setting changed its language.

Locale is also separate from timezone. If the page must use a particular browser timezone, set timezoneId independently, for example:

Set locale in Playwright Test
If you use Playwright Test rather than launching a browser directly, configure locale through the test options. For one test, use test.use() in the relevant test file:

Choose screenshot output and dimensions
page.screenshot() captures the visible viewport by default. Set options to change the captured area or file output:
- Full page: Set
fullPage: trueto capture the full scrollable page rather than just the viewport. - File type: Playwright supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP. When saving with
path, the filename extension determines the output type unless you specifytype. - Scale: Choose CSS-pixel or device-pixel scale. Device-pixel output follows device pixel density and can produce a larger image.
- Clip: Use the screenshot API’s clipping option when only a selected rectangular region is needed.
- Buffer: The method returns an image buffer, so you can process or write the image yourself instead of passing a path.
For instance, save a full-page PNG with:

Keep locale screenshots useful for visual tests
Locale correctness and pixel-for-pixel repeatability are different concerns. A locale setting controls browser emulation, but screenshot output can also vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. For visual comparisons, keep the execution environment consistent with the one that produced the baseline. Playwright explains these sources of variation in its visual comparisons guide.
Troubleshoot locale screenshots
- The page is still in another language: Confirm the context has the intended
localebefore navigation. Then check whether the site chooses language through its URL, saved preferences, account, or an in-page setting; locale emulation does not override every site-specific choice. - Dates or times do not match the expected region: Locale and timezone are separate. Set
timezoneIdas well if the browser’s timezone affects the page. - The screenshot is missing content below the fold: The default capture is the viewport. Add
fullPage: truewhen you need the full scrollable page. - Visual comparison images differ between runs or machines: Compare runs in the same browser and execution environment as the baseline, including headless mode and relevant host settings.
