A screenshot records the browser state; it does not grant access or establish permission to retain or share the article.
Before you capture: confirm access and intended use
This workflow is for an authorized subscriber viewing a page through their own permitted account session. Do not use Selenium to bypass a subscription wall, fabricate credentials, or borrow someone else’s session. Check the publisher’s account terms and applicable permissions before storing or sharing a copy: browser access is not blanket permission to redistribute the content.
Selenium automates browsers through WebDriver, and its screenshot APIs capture what the browser has rendered. The browser automation and capture APIs do not decide whether a publisher permits a particular copy or use. See the Selenium project documentation.
Choose the right capture format
| What you need | Selenium method | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| What is visible in the current window | Python driver.save_screenshot("page.png") or driver.get_screenshot_as_file("page.png") |
Captures the current browser window, not automatically the entire document. Selenium’s screenshot documentation: screenshots. |
| A particular article region or other element | Locate the element, then call element.screenshot("element.png") |
Use a stable locator for the element you intend to capture. Selenium documents element screenshots separately from window screenshots: screenshots. |
| The full document as an image | Firefox Python API: driver.get_full_page_screenshot_as_file("page.png") |
The cited full-document method is from Firefox’s Python API. Do not assume it is available with every browser and binding; check the documentation for your combination: Firefox WebDriver Python API. |
| A PDF representation | WebDriver print_page() |
Selenium documents this PDF capability for Chromium browsers running headless. Pagination and rendering can differ from the web page: Print Page. |

Install Selenium and a supported browser
Use the browser and WebDriver setup supported by your project. Selenium’s current project overview describes WebDriver as the interface used to automate browsers; consult its documentation for setup and browser-specific details. The example below uses Chrome, but it does not implement a publisher’s login flow or page-specific readiness condition.

Navigate, authenticate, wait, and save
Run this outline after adapting the authentication and wait portions to the publisher’s permitted workflow and page structure:
from selenium import webdriver
driver = webdriver.Chrome()
try:
driver.get("https://example.com/article")
# Authenticate through the permitted site workflow.
# Wait for a page element or state that confirms the intended content is ready.
driver.save_screenshot("page.png")
finally:
driver.quit()
For clean copy-and-run Python syntax, remove the leading space before driver = if your editor preserves the indentation shown above:

- FAST SPEEDS - Scans color and black and white documents a blazing speed up to 16ppm (1). Color scanning won’t slow you down as the color scan speed is the same as the black and white scan speed.
- ULTRA COMPACT – At less than 1 foot in length and only about 1. 5lbs in weight you can fit this device virtually anywhere (a bag, a purse, even a pocket).
- READY WHENEVER YOU ARE – The DS-640 mobile scanner is powered via an included micro USB 3. 0 cable allowing you to use it even where there is no outlet available. Plug it into you PC or laptop and you are ready to scan.
- WORKS YOUR WAY – Use the Brother free iPrint&Scan desktop app for scanning to multiple “Scan-to” destinations like PC, Network, cloud services, Email and OCR. (2) Supports Windows, Mac and Linux and TWAIN/WIA for PC/ICA for Mac/SANE drivers. (3)
- OPTIMIZE IMAGES AND TEXT – Automatic color detection/adjustment, image rotation (PC only), bleed through prevention/background removal, text enhancement, color drop to enhance scans. Software suite includes document management and OCR software. (4)
from selenium import webdriver
driver = webdriver.Chrome()
try:
driver.get("https://example.com/article")
# Authenticate through the permitted site workflow.
# Wait for a page element or state that confirms the intended content is ready.
driver.save_screenshot("page.png")
finally:
driver.quit()
save_screenshot("page.png") saves the current-window capture as a PNG. Selenium’s example uses the same method pattern for a current browsing context/window: screenshot documentation. The example is illustrative, not tested against a publisher site; it intentionally leaves the publisher-specific authentication and readiness steps unspecified.
Wait for the actual content, not an arbitrary delay
Do not assume that navigation returning means the article has finished rendering. Choose a wait condition based on a page element or state that signals the content you need is present. The right locator and condition depend on the publisher’s page structure, so there is no universal selector or fixed delay that can be supplied safely here.

Capture an element, full document, or PDF
Save one article element
If the page exposes a stable element locator and you only need that region, locate the element and save its screenshot. Selenium documents this pattern:
article = driver.find_element("css selector", "article")
article.screenshot("article.png")
Replace article with a selector that matches the intended content on the actual page; the example selector is not guaranteed to fit any particular publisher.

Save the full document as an image in Firefox
The Firefox Python API documents full-page screenshot methods, including:
driver.get_full_page_screenshot_as_file("page.png")
This is browser- and API-specific. Confirm that the selected Firefox and Selenium binding support the method before building it into a workflow. It is distinct from a current-window screenshot, which may show only the viewport.

Print to PDF in headless Chromium
Selenium’s documented print_page() capability returns a PDF representation and requires Chromium in headless mode. Check the output’s pagination and rendering in your target environment rather than treating it as identical to a screenshot.
Troubleshoot common capture problems
- The image shows a login or subscription prompt: verify that the browser is in the intended authorized account and that the page reached the content state you expect before taking the screenshot. The API captures the state currently in the browser; it does not grant access.
- Text or images are missing: wait for the relevant element or content state, then capture again. The specific selector and readiness condition depend on the site.
- The bottom of the page is cut off: a window screenshot is a viewport capture. Use a documented full-document method supported by the chosen browser, capture the relevant element, or use PDF output where supported; these outputs have different behavior.
- The PDF method is unavailable: confirm you are using Chromium in headless mode, as required by Selenium’s documented print capability.
- The saved file contains sensitive account or personal information: store it in a location protected appropriately for your situation. Selenium’s API documentation does not set the publisher’s retention or data-handling requirements.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. For a one-request capture, use the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication and available options:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/article -o shot.webp
For authorized pages that require a subscriber session, use only an authentication method and access the service permits; a URL-only request should not be treated as a way to get through a paywall. ScreenshotNeo removes known cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, and the Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Selenium provide permission to save or share a subscriber-only article?
No. Selenium provides browser automation and capture APIs; check the publisher’s terms and permissions for your intended use.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can a normal Selenium screenshot capture the entire page?
A current-window screenshot is not the same as a full-document screenshot. Selenium’s documented full-page image method cited here is specifically from Firefox’s Python API.
Can Selenium save the page as a PDF?
Selenium documents PDF printing through Chromium in headless mode; inspect pagination and rendering in the target environment.
