To capture a page behind a login with ApiFlash, provide the target site’s authentication data in the way its login system expects: pass a valid session cookie with cookies, send a token or other required header with headers, or use injected JavaScript for a login flow that can be automated. ApiFlash’s access key authenticates your request to ApiFlash; it does not sign you in to the target site. The right method depends on the site’s authentication design.
Choose the method that matches the site’s login
ApiFlash identifies three approaches: request headers for token-based authentication, cookies for session-based authentication, and JavaScript injection to automate a login flow. Its FAQ says the best approach depends on the authentication mechanism (ApiFlash FAQ; API documentation).
- Token or header authentication: If the site accepts an authorization token or another required header, pass it using ApiFlash’s
headersparameter. - Session-cookie authentication: Sign in through the site’s normal process, then pass the resulting valid cookie values using
cookies. - Automatable login form: ApiFlash lists injected JavaScript as an option for automating login. The implementation depends on the page and flow, and it is not guaranteed to work for every login system.
- A site you control: You can design a secure bypass for screenshot access, such as a secret key in the URL. Keep this limited to your own site; do not weaken access controls on a third-party site.
ApiFlash’s access key and the target site’s credentials serve separate purposes. The access key authorizes use of ApiFlash; the target still needs whatever authentication its own system requires.
Capture a session-protected page with cookies
For a site that authenticates a browser session with cookies, first create a valid session normally. ApiFlash’s FAQ describes signing in and then supplying the cookie values to the API. Cookies are not a way to bypass login: an expired, incomplete, or wrong-session cookie will not grant access.

- Sign in to the target site through its normal login process, using an account authorized to view the page.
- Obtain the session cookie name and value using the site’s approved workflow. Treat these values as credentials.
- Send the target URL and cookie string to ApiFlash. The
cookiesparameter takes semicolon-separated name-value pairs, for examplesession_id=VALUE; preference=VALUE. URL-encode the parameter when sending it in a GET query string. - Inspect the returned capture to confirm that the page shows the authenticated content rather than a login screen, error, or incomplete render.
ApiFlash’s documented endpoint is https://api.apiflash.com/v1/urltoimage. Calls require an ApiFlash access key, and the target URL must include http:// or https://. GET requests use query parameters; POST requests accept form data. See the ApiFlash API documentation for the current request parameters.
Example request shape
In a GET request, provide the access key, fully qualified target URL, and URL-encoded cookie string as query parameters. For example, the unencoded cookie value would have this shape:
session_id=YOUR_SESSION_VALUE; preference=YOUR_PREFERENCE_VALUE

Encode the cookie parameter for the query string rather than placing raw separators or special characters in a URL. Do not publish a request URL containing a real access key or session cookie.
Use headers for token-based authentication
If the target expects a token or other HTTP header, pass the required header or headers in ApiFlash’s headers parameter. ApiFlash describes header values as semicolon-separated header/value pairs; URL-encode parameter values as needed for a GET request. The exact header name and value come from the target service’s authentication requirements, not from ApiFlash.
Header-based authentication can have a rendering side effect: ApiFlash’s FAQ cautions that custom headers may apply to all requests, including subresources such as external fonts. If the screenshot is missing fonts or other assets, inspect the request behavior and consider self-hosting the fonts or using the cookie approach when it fits the site’s authentication design.

When JavaScript login automation or a site-owner bypass fits
Automating a login flow
ApiFlash documents JavaScript injection as an option for automating login. A script must match the actual page: selectors, form behavior, redirects, multi-factor prompts, and other site-specific steps can affect whether it works. The official material does not promise that injected login automation works with every flow. Use it only where you are authorized to automate the account and handle any credentials securely.
Designing access for a site you operate
If you control the target site, ApiFlash suggests a secure bypass such as a secret key in the URL as one possible approach. Design that mechanism deliberately: restrict its scope and lifetime where possible, and do not expose the secret in public links, source code, or logs. This is an option for a controlled site, not a recommendation to circumvent another site’s login.
Keep cookies, tokens, and access keys private
Session cookies and authentication tokens can grant access to an account or protected content. Keep them out of public image URLs, client-side browser code, and logs. Make the ApiFlash request from a server-side system that can protect its credentials, and use credentials with the shortest practical lifetime and narrowest scope the target service permits. Avoid committing real values to source control; use protected configuration or secret storage.

Check rendering, caching, and request limits
Verify the captured page
After the request, check whether the screenshot contains the expected signed-in page, whether it has finished loading, and whether fonts or other assets are absent. ApiFlash documents wait_for and wait_until controls for waiting on page conditions. Choose a wait condition suited to the target rather than assuming that a successful HTTP response means the final page has rendered.
Handle cached captures
ApiFlash says requests with identical parameters can be cached. Its documentation lists a default cache duration of 86,400 seconds. Use fresh=true when you need to request a fresh capture; ttl controls cache duration. A cache hit can therefore return an earlier rendering rather than reflect a newly changed page or session state.
Plan for rate limiting
ApiFlash’s undated API documentation, accessed in 2026, specifies 20 requests per second with a burst size of 400. Excess requests may be delayed, and requests beyond the burst may receive HTTP 429. If captures are rate-limited, reduce request volume or spread requests over time.
