For full-page captures, scroll through the page first so lazy-loaded images have a chance to start. A navigation event or a quiet network alone does not prove the page is visually ready.
Capture a mobile screenshot with Playwright
This Node.js example uses a mobile device profile, waits for a meaningful page element, then waits for fonts and image loads before saving a full-page PNG. Replace the URL and readiness selector with values that match the site you are capturing.

This code is a starting point, not a universal page-readiness detector: the main selector may not exist on every page, and the image check covers DOM <img> elements rather than every possible visual asset, such as CSS background images. The event listeners treat an image error as a completed attempt so one broken asset will not keep the script waiting forever; check naturalWidth if failed images should instead fail your capture.
Choose the right mobile setup and capture area
Use a device profile or a controlled viewport
Playwright device emulation can set characteristics such as viewport dimensions, user agent, and touch behavior. A named profile is useful when you want a recognizable mobile configuration; an explicit viewport is better when you need exact dimensions. Mobile behavior can also depend on the page’s viewport metadata. See Playwright’s emulation documentation.

Choose viewport, element, or full-page capture
- Viewport: captures the visible phone-sized area, using
await page.screenshot({ path: 'mobile.png' }). - Element: captures a selected component after confirming it is visible, using
await page.locator('.product-card').screenshot({ path: 'element.png' }). - Full page: captures the document beyond the initial viewport, using
fullPage: true. Trigger lazy loading in the regions you need before checking image readiness.
Playwright’s screenshot scale option controls whether output dimensions follow CSS pixels or device pixels. Device-pixel output can increase image dimensions and file size. Refer to the Page API for current screenshot options.
Wait for the conditions that matter—not just navigation
- Wait for navigation to reach a useful milestone. The example uses
load, which is a reasonable starting point for ordinary page assets.DOMContentLoadedhappens earlier; neither guarantees a single-page app has rendered all intended content. - Wait for application content. Use a locator or a page-specific ready signal that represents the content you want to capture. A visible
mainelement only establishes that this element is visible, not that every section is complete. - Wait for fonts.
document.fonts.readyresolves when the document’s font loading and layout work have settled for fonts used by the page. It does not ensure that content inserted later will not request more fonts. - Trigger lazy image loading when capturing below the fold. Images marked for lazy loading can be deferred until they are in or near the viewport. Scroll through the portions to capture, then check image state. See web.dev’s discussion of lazy-loaded responsive images.
- Check successful image loads and decoding.
completemeans the load attempt finished, not necessarily that the image succeeded. A positivenaturalWidthhelps distinguish a usable image from a failed one. Where supported,decode()waits for decoding before capture.
Playwright documents networkidle as a discouraged general testing readiness method: it means there have been no network connections for at least 500 ms, not that the intended content or lazy images are ready. Prefer assertions and targeted waits for the page conditions that affect your screenshot. See the navigation and Page API documentation.

Make repeated mobile screenshots comparable
For visual regression checks, keep the browser, operating system, fonts, viewport, and other rendering conditions consistent. Playwright notes that rendering can vary between browsers and platforms; its visual comparison assertions wait for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing. Troubleshoot missing fonts, images, or content
- The screenshot has fallback typography: verify the page actually requests the intended font, await
document.fonts.readyafter the relevant content is present, and check the browser console or network activity for failed font requests. - Images below the fold are absent: scroll the portions to be captured to trigger lazy loading, then wait for the relevant images. A first-viewport check cannot establish readiness for the entire page.
- An image never appears despite
complete: inspectnaturalWidth. A failed request can be complete with a zero natural width; decide whether to retry, report the failure, or allow the capture to proceed. - The page is blank or incomplete after
load: wait for a meaningful app-specific locator or ready condition. Client-rendered content may arrive after the browser’s load event. - The script hangs while waiting: set navigation and locator timeouts, and use bounded waits for assets. A broken image should not hold the capture indefinitely; handle its error and report it if image completeness is required.
- Screenshot differs across machines: align browser and OS versions, installed fonts, device settings, and other rendering inputs before treating a pixel difference as a page change.
