Open DevTools, open the Command Menu, search for screenshot, and choose Capture a full size screenshot. Chrome renders content below the fold and saves the result through its normal download flow.
This is different from Capture screenshot, which records only the current viewport. The full-size command is the built-in choice for long articles, receipts, documentation, bug reports, and design reviews.
Capture a full webpage in Chrome
- Open the page. Navigate to the URL you want to save and let the initial content load.
- Open DevTools. Right-click the page and select Inspect. You can also use Chrome’s platform-specific DevTools keyboard shortcut.
- Open the Command Menu. On Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS, press Ctrl+Shift+P. On macOS, press Command+Shift+P.
- Find the screenshot command. Type screenshot in the Command Menu.
- Capture the complete document. Select Capture full size screenshot. Chrome captures the page beyond the visible viewport and sends the image to the browser’s usual download location.
You do not need to scroll to the bottom first. The command is specifically designed to include content that is not currently visible.
Choose the right DevTools capture mode
DevTools has several screenshot commands. Select the one that matches the evidence or asset you need rather than using a full-page image for every job.

Chrome for Developers documents these full-page, node, area, mobile, and customization workflows in its DevTools screenshot guide, updated August 9, 2024 UTC. The Device Mode documentation, updated July 4, 2022, distinguishes the viewport command from Capture a full size screenshot.
Prepare a page before capturing
A full-size screenshot reflects the page state Chrome can render at that moment. A few preparation steps make the result easier to interpret and repeat.
Wait for content that appears after load
Many sites insert content after the initial HTML arrives. Let charts, comments, images, and other sections finish loading before opening the Command Menu. If a page uses a “load more” control, activate it first; a screenshot cannot include items the page has not added to the document.
Account for lazy-loaded images
Some pages request images only when a section approaches the viewport. The full-size command can capture the complete document, but page-specific lazy-loading behavior can still affect whether every image is present. Inspect the downloaded image and, if necessary, wait longer or use a smaller, targeted node capture.

Headers, cookie notices, floating buttons, and chat controls may be positioned over content. They can appear repeatedly or obscure sections in a tall capture because their behavior is controlled by the page’s CSS and JavaScript. Close notices that you are allowed to dismiss and capture a clean state when the purpose is a document or design review.

Consider unusually tall or dynamic documents
Chrome’s documentation establishes the command, not a universal maximum page height or guaranteed output for every dynamic site. Very tall documents can be difficult to inspect as one image, and scripts that constantly change the layout can produce a result that differs from a manual scroll-through. For those cases, capture a relevant element or area, or split the work into smaller sections.
Inspect and preserve the downloaded image
- Open Chrome’s download list and locate the file saved after the command completes.
- Open the image at a zoom level that lets you check the top, middle, and bottom of the document.
- Look for missing lazy-loaded media, overlays, clipped sections, or layout shifts.
- Keep the original file unchanged when it is evidence for a bug report or review; make annotations on a copy.
A single full-page image can become extremely tall. If a reviewer needs to compare a small component, a node or area capture is usually easier to read and share.
Advanced DevTools choices
Capture a specific element
Open the Elements panel, select the target node, then use DevTools’ node screenshot command. This avoids unrelated navigation, ads, and surrounding sections while preserving the element’s rendered appearance. If the element itself exceeds the viewport, use the command for a node larger than the screen size.
Capture a mobile layout
Use Device Mode to choose a simulated mobile viewport, then select the mobile screenshot command. This is useful when a responsive breakpoint changes navigation, typography, or card layout. A mobile capture represents the emulated viewport, not a photograph of a physical phone.
Capture a drawn region
Choose the area option and drag around the exact region required. Area capture is preferable when a bug report needs one control, message, or chart and the rest of the page would be noise.

Customize before capture
DevTools also exposes screenshot customization options. Use them when the default viewport, device, or framing does not match the review requirement, then verify that the resulting image still contains the evidence you intend to share.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need repeatable captures in a build, script, or AI workflow, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF for the URL you provide.

This cURL request captures a page and writes the response to a file:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same request in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; more than 60 known consent platforms and similar interruptions are covered, and each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed as clean shots. Response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed.
For AI workflows, its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The API also supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets plus custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper size and margins, landscape mode and page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, selector or delay or network-idle waits, request and resource blocking, custom headers, cookies, user agents and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed links for public image tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs are accepted to ease migration.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Manual DevTools capture
Chrome is convenient when you need one page immediately and want to see exactly what is being rendered. It has no service quota or API charge, but the result depends on the current browser session, page scripts, viewport, cookies, and network conditions. Repeating the same capture across many URLs requires manual work and consistent preparation.
Automated capture
An API is more practical for scheduled jobs, documentation pipelines, regression checks, and batches. Set explicit waits or network-idle conditions for pages that render asynchronously, choose a viewport and device consistently, and retain the response headers when billing status matters. Caching can reduce repeated work when the chosen time-to-live is appropriate; disable or shorten it when freshness is critical.
Large outputs
Full-page images and PDFs can be large, especially at retina scale or on long documents. Resize the output when a review copy does not need source resolution, or capture a specific selector when only one component is relevant. For public embeds, signed links avoid exposing a private access key in an image URL.

Troubleshooting Chrome full-page screenshots
The command is missing
Make sure DevTools is open and that you typed screenshot into the DevTools Command Menu, not Chrome’s address bar. Open the menu again with the correct platform shortcut and search for the full phrase Capture full size screenshot.

Only the visible area was saved
You selected Capture screenshot, which is the viewport command. Repeat the process and choose Capture full size screenshot.
Images or sections are missing
Wait for the page to finish rendering and check whether content is loaded only after scrolling, clicking, or dismissing a notice. If the page keeps changing, capture the affected node or area after it stabilizes.
A banner or widget covers the page
Dismiss the element before capture when the site permits it. If it is fixed by page code or returns during rendering, use a selector-based automated capture that can hide the selector, or capture a node that excludes the overlay.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe image is too tall to use
Keep the full-size file as the archive, then create a node or area capture for the section people need to read. For a report, split the page into logical sections rather than shrinking one image until text is illegible.
The layout shifts between attempts
Dynamic content, late fonts, ads, personalization, and network timing can change dimensions. Capture after the layout settles, use the same viewport and zoom, and record the page state in the issue or review notes.
The page requires authentication
Sign in to the page in the same Chrome session before opening DevTools. The screenshot reflects the document currently rendered in that session; it does not create credentials or bypass an access control.
