A full-page screenshot captures the entire scrollable document, not just the pixels currently visible in your browser window. For a one-off image, use Firefox’s Save full page command or Chrome DevTools’ Capture a full size screenshot. For repeatable work, Playwright’s fullPage: true option automates the same result.

The right method depends on whether you need a quick manual capture, precise browser controls, or a script you can run in tests and production.

What makes a screenshot “full page”?

A normal viewport screenshot records only the visible rectangle. A full-page capture includes content below the fold and produces one tall image representing the page’s scrollable area. Playwright describes this as capturing the page “as if you had a very tall screen and the page could fit it entirely” (official documentation).

Choose the command explicitly labeled Save full page, Capture a full size screenshot, or fullPage: true. A command named simply “screenshot” may capture only the current viewport.

Firefox: save an entire page without code

Firefox has the simplest built-in workflow for an occasional capture.

  1. Open the page you want to save.
  2. Right-click an empty area of the page. You can also press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
  3. Choose Take Screenshot.
  4. In the screenshot controls, select Save full page.
  5. Download the image or copy it to the clipboard. A downloaded file goes to Firefox’s normal download location.

Firefox also offers visible-area, selected-region, and automatically highlighted page-part captures. Those modes are useful when you do not need the whole document; they are not substitutes for Save full page.

Firefox DevTools: more control over the capture

Enable the full-page toolbar button

  1. Open Firefox DevTools with F12 or the browser menu.
  2. Open DevTools Settings.
  3. Find Available Toolbox Buttons.
  4. Enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
  5. Click the new screenshot button in the toolbox. Firefox saves the resulting image in your Downloads folder.

Use the Web Console helper

Open the Web Console and run:

:screenshot --fullpage

The helper can also accept a filename, delay, device-pixel ratio, selector, clipboard behavior, and a force-file option. Set a new filename before repeated captures because an existing filename can be overwritten. A selector is useful when you want a specific element rather than the complete document.

Chrome: capture full size from Device Mode

Chrome’s full-page command is in DevTools Device Mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Chrome DevTools with F12, Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows/Linux, or Command+Option+I on macOS.
  2. Turn on Device Mode by selecting the phone/tablet icon, or press Ctrl+Shift+M (Windows/Linux) or Command+Shift+M (macOS).
  3. Open the Device Mode More options menu.
  4. Choose Capture a full size screenshot.

Chrome saves an image containing content outside the current viewport. If you choose a regular screenshot command instead, the result may stop at the visible area. Menu placement can change between Chrome releases, so look specifically within Device Mode’s More options menu if the command is not immediately visible. Chrome’s release notes announced the feature in Chrome 59; that historical announcement confirms its existence, not a current version requirement (Chrome DevTools release announcement).

Capture only one Chrome element

For an element-only image, inspect the node in DevTools, open the node’s context menu, and use the screenshot command for that node. This is an element capture, not a full-page capture, and is preferable when a long page contains unrelated content.

Automate full-page screenshots with Playwright

Playwright is the practical choice for visual regression tests, scheduled jobs, and repeatable documentation. Install it in a Node.js project with npm install -D playwright, then install a browser with npx playwright install.

Complete Node.js example

const { chromium } = require('playwright');

(async () => {
  const browser = await chromium.launch();
  const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
  await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true });
  await browser.close();
})();

The API’s fullPage option defaults to false, so set it explicitly. A relative path is resolved from the current working directory (Page screenshot API).

Python example

from playwright.sync_api import sync_playwright

with sync_playwright() as p:
    browser = p.chromium.launch()
    page = browser.new_page(viewport={"width": 1440, "height": 900})
    page.goto("https://example.com", wait_until="networkidle")
    page.screenshot(path="full-page.png", full_page=True)
    browser.close()

Install the Python package with pip install playwright, followed by playwright install.

Control loading before capture

Use a page-specific wait when content is rendered after navigation:

await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.wait_for_selector('.article-body');
await page.wait_for_timeout(1000);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'article.png', fullPage: true });

Do not assume that one wait strategy handles every application. Lazy images, sticky headers, animations, infinite scrolling, and consent dialogs can change the saved result. Inspect the output and choose a selector or delay that matches the page. Playwright can also capture an individual locator:

await page.locator('.invoice').screenshot({ path: 'invoice.png' });

CSS pixels versus device pixels

Playwright’s screenshot API provides a scale choice. CSS-pixel output keeps high-density screenshots smaller; device-pixel output produces a larger image with more physical pixels. Pick CSS pixels for lighter files and device pixels when downstream print or pixel-level comparison needs the extra resolution.

Why a result stops at the viewport

  • Viewport mode was selected: repeat the capture using Firefox’s Save full page, Chrome’s Capture a full size screenshot, or Playwright’s fullPage: true.
  • The page is still loading: wait for a meaningful selector, network idle, or a short page-specific delay before capturing.
  • Lazy content is missing: scroll or trigger the page’s loading behavior before the screenshot, then inspect the output. No single method guarantees correct rendering for every lazy-loaded implementation.
  • Infinite scrolling never ends: full-page capture cannot infer where an intentionally unbounded feed should stop. Define a bounded state or capture a selected element.
  • Sticky or animated elements look wrong: disable the animation where you control the page, wait for a stable state, and check whether a fixed header is repeated or overlaps content.
  • A consent dialog covers the page: dismiss it manually or automate the dismissal before capture. A screenshot records whatever state the browser has at that moment.
  • The image is unexpectedly huge: reduce the viewport width, use CSS-pixel scale in Playwright, or capture the relevant element instead of the entire document.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It accepts a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it accepts cookie/consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status.

Use the API directly (see the ScreenshotNeo documentation):

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo includes full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, click and wait actions, blocked ads or resource types, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen-TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

FAQ

Can I capture a full page without installing software?

Yes. Firefox’s built-in Take Screenshot and Chrome DevTools Device Mode work in the browser. Playwright and ScreenshotNeo are better suited to repeatable or automated captures.

Does full-page mean a PDF?

No. Firefox, Chrome, and Playwright produce image screenshots. A PDF is a separate output mode; ScreenshotNeo supports PDF capture when that format is required.

Can I capture a page that requires login?

Browser automation can use an authenticated browser context. ScreenshotNeo supports custom cookies, headers, user agents, and Authorization values; protect credentials and avoid exposing them in client-side code.
