Use the browser-specific full-page capture path: Selenium’s Python Firefox driver provides full-document screenshot methods, while Chromium can capture beyond the viewport through Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP). The ordinary WebDriver screenshot captures the current browsing context, so it should not be treated as a full-document screenshot. Sticky navigation is a CSS layout issue; if it repeats or obscures content in the image, temporarily neutralize its sticky positioning for the capture and restore it afterward.
Choose the full-page capture method for your browser
First decide whether you need the entire document or only the visible viewport. Selenium’s standard WebDriver screenshot is the simpler current-context option. Full-document capture is browser-specific, rather than a universal WebDriver behavior.
| Browser or method | Full-page approach | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Firefox with Selenium Python | Use the Firefox driver’s documented full-page screenshot methods. | The API documents methods that save or return a full-document screenshot of the current window. |
| Chromium with CDP | Call Page.captureScreenshot with captureBeyondViewport: true. |
The cited Selenium-maintained Chromium v136 protocol definition makes this flag optional and false by default. CDP is Chromium-specific and protocol details can change. |
| Ordinary WebDriver screenshot | Use the standard screenshot method for the current browsing context. | Do not assume it captures the full document. |

Prepare the page and diagnose sticky navigation
- Navigate to the page, then wait for the content that matters to be present and ready. For dynamic pages, wait for lazy-loaded images and content to settle; screenshot APIs do not guarantee that asynchronous page content has finished loading.
- Identify the actual navigation element and its scrolling ancestor. Sticky positioning is governed by CSS: it sticks after crossing its threshold while remaining within its containing block. The nearest ancestor with a scrolling mechanism—including one created by
overflow: hidden,scroll,auto, oroverlay—may control it. - Decide whether the output should show the navigation once at the top, retain its sticky presentation, or omit it. If it repeats or covers content, test a temporary CSS override that changes its position to a non-sticky state for the screenshot.
- Restore the original styling after capture, including if the capture raises an error. Inspect the image: nested scroll containers, fixed elements, and page scripts can affect the result.
These sticky-positioning details follow CSS behavior described by MDN’s position reference and MDN’s overflow reference. Temporarily changing the style is a CSS-based workaround, not a guarantee that every browser’s full-page capture will treat sticky elements identically.
Capture a full-page screenshot in Firefox with Selenium Python
The Firefox driver documents get_full_page_screenshot_as_file(filename), save_full_page_screenshot(filename), and methods that return PNG bytes or base64. This runnable example waits for a page element, changes a known sticky header to static positioning during capture, and restores its original inline style in a finally block. Replace the URL and selector with those for your page.
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
url = "https://example.com"
sticky_selector = "header.site-header" # Change to the actual sticky element
options = webdriver.FirefoxOptions()
# Uncomment for headless capture:
# options.add_argument("-headless")
driver = webdriver.Firefox(options=options)
try:
driver.get(url)
WebDriverWait(driver, 20).until(
EC.presence_of_element_located((By.CSS_SELECTOR, "main"))
)
# Give page scripts and lazy content time to settle when needed.
driver.execute_async_script(
"const done = arguments[arguments.length - 1];"
"window.addEventListener('load', () => setTimeout(done, 500), {once: true});"
"if (document.readyState === 'complete') setTimeout(done, 500);"
)
header = driver.find_element(By.CSS_SELECTOR, sticky_selector)
original_style = header.get_attribute("style")
try:
driver.execute_script(
"arguments[0].style.setProperty('position', 'static', 'important');",
header,
)
driver.save_full_page_screenshot("full-page.png")
finally:
if original_style:
driver.execute_script(
"arguments[0].setAttribute('style', arguments[1]);",
header,
original_style,
)
else:
driver.execute_script(
"arguments[0].removeAttribute('style');", header
)
finally:
driver.quit()
For a simpler Firefox capture without a sticky-style override, replace the inner capture block with driver.get_full_page_screenshot_as_file("full-page.png"). Use the screenshot method documented by the Selenium Firefox API version installed in your project; available method names depend on that driver API.
Capture beyond the viewport in Chromium with Selenium and CDP
For Chromium, CDP exposes Page.captureScreenshot. The code below enables beyond-viewport capture and uses the current document’s dimensions as a capture clip. CDP calls are browser-specific; pin Chrome and driver versions in your project and verify this path when upgrading.
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
url = "https://example.com"
sticky_selector = "header.site-header" # Change to the actual sticky element
options = webdriver.ChromeOptions()
# Uncomment for headless capture:
# options.add_argument("--headless=new")
driver = webdriver.Chrome(options=options)
try:
driver.get(url)
WebDriverWait(driver, 20).until(
EC.presence_of_element_located((By.CSS_SELECTOR, "main"))
)
header = driver.find_element(By.CSS_SELECTOR, sticky_selector)
original_style = header.get_attribute("style")
try:
driver.execute_script(
"arguments[0].style.setProperty('position', 'static', 'important');",
header,
)
dimensions = driver.execute_script(
"return {width: document.documentElement.scrollWidth, "
"height: document.documentElement.scrollHeight, "
"x: 0, y: 0, scale: 1};"
)
result = driver.execute_cdp_cmd(
"Page.captureScreenshot",
{
"format": "png",
"captureBeyondViewport": True,
"clip": dimensions,
},
)
import base64
with open("full-page.png", "wb") as image_file:
image_file.write(base64.b64decode(result["data"]))
finally:
if original_style:
driver.execute_script(
"arguments[0].setAttribute('style', arguments[1]);",
header,
original_style,
)
else:
driver.execute_script(
"arguments[0].removeAttribute('style');", header
)
finally:
driver.quit()
Some pages change height as images or scripts load. In that case, wait for the relevant content before reading document dimensions. If the image is clipped or unexpectedly sized, compare the dimensions and output with a normal viewport screenshot, then inspect the page’s scroll containers and fixed or sticky elements.
Keep a viewport screenshot for comparison
When diagnosing a bad full-page result, save an ordinary viewport screenshot too. It helps distinguish a page-readiness or layout issue from a full-document capture issue. Firefox Developer Tools also offers a manual full-page screenshot command: its console helper accepts --fullpage to include content outside the window bounds. That is useful for manual comparison, not a Selenium API. See Firefox Developer Tools screenshot documentation.

Troubleshoot common failures
- The screenshot stops at the viewport: A standard WebDriver screenshot may be capturing only the current browsing context. Use Firefox’s documented full-page method or Chromium CDP with
captureBeyondViewportenabled. - The navigation appears repeatedly or covers text: Locate the sticky element and its scrolling ancestor, then test a temporary non-sticky position for capture. Restore the original style and inspect the image rather than assuming the override worked.
- The header selector fails: The page may use a different selector, a nested component, or an iframe. Inspect the live DOM and target the element that actually sticks in the relevant browsing context.
- The image omits late content: Wait for the specific content or image condition your page requires. A fixed delay is only a fallback; it cannot guarantee that every site has finished rendering.
- CDP returns an error or changes behavior after an upgrade: The capture path depends on Chromium’s protocol. Check the Chrome/driver combination and the protocol definition for the version in use; CDP documentation warns that tip-of-tree details may change without backward-compatibility guarantees.
- The full-page result has unexpected dimensions: Recheck document width and height after dynamic content settles. Inspect nested overflow containers, fixed positioning, and scripts that alter layout during capture.
