Short answer: macOS has no documented system-wide shortcut that automatically scrolls through an entire webpage. Shift–Command–3 captures the display, and Shift–Command–4 captures a selected area. To make a scrolling webpage image from the keyboard, Chrome users can open DevTools with Command–Option–I, open its command menu with Command–Shift–P, and run Capture full size screenshot.
What the Mac screenshot shortcuts actually capture
Apple documents four ordinary screenshot scopes: the entire display, a selected area, a window or menu, and the controls in the Screenshot app. None of those modes automatically scrolls a webpage to include content below the fold. A normal shortcut therefore produces a picture of what is currently rendered on screen, not a complete, tall page.
| Shortcut or command | Result | Full webpage? |
|---|---|---|
| Shift–Command–3 | Entire display | No; only the visible screen |
| Shift–Command–4 | Selected rectangle | No; only the selected screen area |
| Shift–Command–5 | Screenshot and screen-recording controls | No; it adds capture controls, not page scrolling |
| Chrome DevTools command | Full-size page image | Yes, when the page and browser permit it |
On Macs running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, supported models can choose SDR PNG or HDR HEIF in Screenshot settings. That changes the file format, not the capture area. Some applications also restrict screenshots of their windows.
Chrome: the keyboard-driven full-page method
Chrome’s DevTools has a Capture full size screenshot command. The following sequence uses the keyboard to reach it; it is a DevTools workflow rather than a macOS shortcut. The exact key sequence is commonly documented in Chrome Community guidance, while the command itself is available from the DevTools command interface.

- Open the webpage in Chrome and wait until the initial load finishes.
- Press Command–Option–I to open DevTools.
- Press Command–Shift–P to open the DevTools command menu.
- Type
capture full size screenshot. - Select Capture full size screenshot from the results.
- Open Chrome’s downloads list or your default Downloads folder and inspect the generated image.
Chrome renders the page at the current emulated viewport and creates an image containing the page’s full layout height. The browser interface itself is not part of that page image. If you need a screenshot of the entire Mac display, use Shift–Command–3 instead.
Before you run the command
- Dismiss sign-in prompts, cookie dialogs and overlays that cover content you need.
- Wait for charts, videos, fonts and other asynchronous components to finish loading.
- Scroll through the page once, especially when it contains lazy-loaded images. Reaching the lower sections can trigger assets that otherwise remain unloaded.
- Keep the target tab active while invoking DevTools; capturing another tab produces a different result.
When Chrome’s result is incomplete
Dynamic pages may change while Chrome is measuring their full height. Sticky headers can appear repeatedly, animations can capture mid-transition, and content loaded only after an interaction may be absent. Stop animations where possible, expand the sections you need, and capture again after the page settles.
Safari: full-page capture through Web Inspector
Safari’s keyboard reference lists Command–P for printing a webpage but does not list a dedicated full-page screenshot shortcut. Safari’s built-in image path uses the Develop menu and Web Inspector.
- Open Safari > Settings (called Preferences on some older releases).
- Open Advanced.
- Enable Show features for web developers or Show Develop menu in menu bar, depending on the Safari version.
- Load the webpage you want to capture.
- Choose Develop > Show Web Inspector.
- In the Elements panel, locate the first top-level line beginning with
html. - Right-click that
htmlline and choose Capture Screenshot. - Select a save location for the generated image.
This is a browser developer-tool operation, not a single keyboard chord. If the context-menu command is missing, confirm that Web Inspector is enabled and that you selected the document’s top-level html element rather than a child element.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFirefox: a context-menu option
Firefox provides a page-level capture command without requiring a Mac-wide shortcut:
- Open the target page.
- Right-click in the page and choose Take a Screenshot.
- Select Save full page.
- Download the image or copy it, depending on the controls shown by your Firefox version.
This option is useful when Firefox is already your working browser. It remains a browser menu action, not an Apple screenshot shortcut.

Choose the method that matches the output you need
| Need | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A picture of everything currently visible | macOS screenshot shortcut | Fast and built in, but it does not scroll |
| A tall image from a Chrome page | Chrome DevTools | Keyboard-driven command captures the page’s full layout |
| A tall image from Safari | Web Inspector | Uses Safari’s developer tools and the top-level HTML element |
| A tall image from Firefox | Take a Screenshot > Save full page | Accessible from the page context menu |
| An archive that preserves links and graphics | Safari Web Archive | File > Save As can save a Web Archive; this is not a screenshot image |
| HTML source for inspection | Safari Page Source | Saves source markup, not a visual capture |
Safari’s Web Archive can preserve graphics and maintain links while the destination pages remain available. Page Source saves HTML. Use either when your goal is preservation or analysis rather than a shareable image.
Lazy loading, long pages and other edge cases
Images missing below the fold
Many sites request images only as they approach the visible viewport. Scroll from top to bottom before capturing, pause where large image groups appear, and then run the full-page command. This improves the chance that the browser has fetched those assets, but it cannot guarantee content from a page that requires a click, login or script-generated state.
Cookie banners, popups and chat widgets
Dismiss or hide overlays before capture. A fixed chat bubble or newsletter dialog can be repeated down a tall image because the browser treats it as part of the viewport while it stitches the page.
Protected or restricted windows
Apple notes that some apps may not allow screenshots of their windows. Browser capture tools can also fail on protected content, bot checks or pages that never complete loading. Do not assume that a full-page command bypasses access controls.
Very tall documents
A page containing thousands of pixels of content can produce a large image that is difficult to open or share. Consider saving sections separately, printing to PDF, or using a capture service that supports resizing and asynchronous jobs.

Troubleshooting checklist
The shortcut does nothing
Make sure you are using the Mac key names: Command is not Control, and Option is not Alt. In Chrome, DevTools must be focused before Command–Shift–P opens its command menu. If a global utility has remapped either chord, open DevTools from Chrome’s menu and continue from there.

Confirm that DevTools is open on a normal webpage, not a browser-internal page such as the extensions manager or a new-tab screen. Reload the document, reopen DevTools, and search for full size screenshot rather than relying on autocomplete.
The bottom of the page is cut off
Check for content that expands after scrolling, a collapsed accordion, an infinite-scroll feed or a frame embedded inside the page. Expand the required sections and allow network activity to finish. An iframe may need to be captured separately if its content is not part of the parent document’s layout.
Images are blank or placeholders
Scroll through the page first to trigger lazy loading. If an image still fails, check whether it requires a login, blocks the browser’s user agent, or is supplied by a script that runs only after interaction.
Safari cannot capture the page
Verify the developer features setting, reopen Web Inspector, and right-click the first document-level html node. Selecting a nested element exposes a different context menu that may not include page capture.

The output is an archive, not an image
Safari’s Web Archive and Page Source commands intentionally save preservation formats. Use the browser’s screenshot command when you need PNG or another image file.

Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo can load lazy images, capture a CSS-selected element, emulate dark mode and device presets, set viewport and retina scale, wait for a selector, delay or network idle, apply custom CSS or JavaScript, click before capture, hide selectors, block ads or resource types, set cookies and headers, choose timezone or geolocation, create transparent images, resize output, cache with a chosen TTL, produce PDFs, and submit asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks. It also supports bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, an OpenAPI specification and an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
Failed loads, bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; yearly billing provides two months free, and every feature is available on every plan. Will a full-page capture include content behind a login?
Only if the browser session is already authorized and the page exposes that content to the capture tool. A screenshot command is not an authentication bypass.
Should I save a webpage as PDF instead?
Use PDF when pagination, selectable text or printing matters more than a single tall image. Use full-page capture when you need a visual representation of the rendered page.
