To capture a webpage beyond what is visible on screen, use Firefox or Chrome’s built-in full-page screenshot control for a one-off image, or automate the capture with Playwright when you need a repeatable workflow. In Firefox, enable the screenshot toolbox button and choose the full-page option; in Chrome, use Device Mode’s More options → Capture a full size screenshot. For scripts, Playwright’s page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true }) captures the full scrollable page. These methods capture page content beyond the viewport, but dynamic pages may need extra handling for deferred or endlessly scrolling content.

What a full-page screenshot captures

A normal screenshot shows the browser’s current viewport: the part of the page visible without scrolling. A full-page screenshot extends the capture across the page’s scrollable content. It is useful for archiving an article, reviewing a long landing page, sharing a complete page for feedback, or saving a page when printing is not appropriate.

Full-page capture does not necessarily mean that every item a visitor could eventually see has loaded. Pages may load images only when they approach the viewport, append results as you scroll, or render a list only for the currently visible region. A capture tool can include the page’s scrollable extent without causing every type of deferred content to appear. Check the output before relying on it.

Choose a method

Method Best for What to know
Firefox DevTools screenshot control A quick capture from Firefox Enable the screenshot toolbox button, then use the full-page option. Firefox also documents a console command with a --fullpage option.
Chrome DevTools Device Mode A quick capture from Chrome Use More options → Capture a full size screenshot. The documented route is through Device Mode.
Playwright Repeatable captures, scripts, or a workflow that needs browser automation Use fullPage: true for the full scrollable page, or capture a specific locator when only one component is needed.
Puppeteer Browser automation in a scripted workflow It supports browser navigation and screenshots of full pages or specific elements.

Built-in browser controls are usually the simplest choice for one image. Automation is a better fit when captures need to run repeatedly or become part of a process. Use an element screenshot rather than a full-page image when the output should contain only a component, such as a chart or card. The official capabilities described for these tools do not establish that one method is universally faster or more accurate.

Capture a full page manually in Firefox

  1. Open the page you want to capture in Firefox.
  2. Open DevTools and open its Settings.
  3. Under Available Toolbox Buttons, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
  4. Click the screenshot icon in the DevTools toolbar. Firefox says the resulting image is saved to Downloads.

Firefox’s screenshot interface also documents a Save full page choice. If you do not see the described button or wording, check the instructions for your installed Firefox version; interface labels and locations can change.

Use Firefox’s console command

Firefox also documents a console screenshot command that accepts --fullpage. The basic form is:

:screenshot screenshot.png --fullpage

The command documentation also describes options for a delay, device-pixel-ratio adjustment, a selector, and file settings. Consult the current Firefox command documentation before using those options: command syntax can change, and this short form is not intended to cover every variant.

Capture a full page manually in Chrome

  1. Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools.
  2. Turn on Device Mode.
  3. Open the Device Mode More options menu.
  4. Select Capture a full size screenshot.

Chrome’s Device Mode menu also offers Capture screenshot, which captures the viewport rather than the full page. Choose the full-size option when you need content outside the visible area. This instruction applies to the documented Device Mode route; do not assume that a similarly named control in another Chrome context works the same way.

Do not confuse it with Network-panel screenshots

The Network panel has a separate screenshot-capture feature that records the page at points during loading. That is useful for inspecting what users see as resources arrive, but it is a loading diagnostic rather than the Device Mode full-size page capture described above.

Automate full-page capture with Playwright

Playwright’s JavaScript API accepts fullPage: true in page.screenshot(). The following Node.js example navigates to a page and saves a PNG capture of its full scrollable content.

const { chromium } = require('playwright');

(async () => {
  const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
  const page = await browser.newPage();
  try {
    await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
    await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

Save it as screenshot.js, install Playwright and its Chromium browser, then run the script:

npm init -y
npm install playwright
npx playwright install chromium
node screenshot.js

Replace https://example.com with the page you can access and want to capture. The example waits for network activity to settle before capturing; some pages keep requests open or load content later, so that wait condition may not suit every site. If navigation waits indefinitely, choose a less strict navigation condition and wait for a page-specific element or a short delay instead.

Capture only an element

If a full-page image is too large or includes unrelated content, take a locator screenshot instead. Playwright supports element screenshots, and its screenshot options include masking selected elements. The target element must exist and be visible at capture time; wait for the relevant locator before taking the screenshot.

When a page uses lazy loading or endless scrolling

Lazy-loaded images are often requested only as the visitor scrolls near them. Infinite-scroll pages may add more content only after a scroll, while virtualized lists can remove off-screen items from the rendered page. Nested scroll containers can also behave differently from the document’s main scroll area. A full-page option alone does not guarantee that all such content will load or remain in the final image.

  • Inspect the output first. Look for blank image areas, missing sections, truncated lists, or content repeated at a join.
  • For lazy images, try scrolling through the page before capture so the page has an opportunity to load images. Whether this works depends on how that page implements loading.
  • For infinite scroll, load the sections you need before taking the final capture. There is no universal stopping point; a feed may continue adding content as long as you scroll.
  • For virtualized content, determine whether the page keeps off-screen items in the document. If it does not, a single full-page image may omit items that were previously visible.
  • For sticky headers, check whether the header appears repeatedly or obscures content in the final image. The result depends on how the capture method handles the page layout.

These are page-dependent checks, not guarantees that a particular browser or script will trigger every deferred resource. If the page is important, compare the capture with the content you can see while scrolling in the browser.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its full-page capture option loads lazy images, though behavior on a particular site can still depend on that site’s implementation.

Here is a cURL request for a full-page capture. Find the available screenshot parameters in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key and change the URL to the page you need. Equivalent Python request:

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

And a Node.js request that saves the returned bytes:

import { writeFile } from 'node:fs/promises';

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
await writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));

ScreenshotNeo’s clean-shot options accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. AI agents can use its MCP server tools take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

Troubleshoot a missing, incomplete, or awkward capture

The screenshot shows only the viewport

In Chrome, confirm that you selected Capture a full size screenshot in Device Mode, not the viewport-only Capture screenshot. In Firefox, use the full-page control or the documented --fullpage command option.

Images or lower sections are missing

The page may defer loading content until it approaches the viewport, or may append sections only after scrolling. Scroll through the relevant content, wait for it to appear, and capture again. If you are automating the process, wait for a selector or page-specific condition rather than assuming navigation completion means every image has loaded.

The automation does not finish navigating

A page can keep network requests active, making a strict network-idle wait unsuitable. Try a less strict navigation wait and then wait for the element that signals the content you need is ready. A fixed delay can help diagnose timing, but it may be too short on a slow page and longer than necessary on a fast one.

The output has gaps, duplicates, or cut-off content

Check whether the page uses an infinite feed, nested scrolling, virtualized content, or sticky elements. Load the sections you need and inspect whether the content remains in the document before capturing. If only one stable component matters, capture that element instead of the entire page.

The Firefox button or command differs

Toolbox controls and command details may vary with Firefox versions. Confirm the current wording and syntax in the documentation for the version you are running rather than relying on an old menu location or command variant.

Make the capture reliable and manageable

  • Choose a sensible target. Full-page images can become very tall; use element capture if the reader only needs one section.
  • Wait for the right condition. Navigation completion is not the same as every page component being ready. Prefer a meaningful selector or state when the page has one.
  • Check dynamic content. Review long captures for missing or repeated sections before archiving or sharing them.
  • Use browser controls for occasional work. They avoid writing a script and are easy to invoke, but are manual.
  • Automate repeated work. A script can make the navigation and capture steps repeatable, but requires setup and page-specific handling for dynamic content.

There is no performance comparison established here that makes one browser or automation library the universal fastest choice. Pick based on whether you need a one-off capture, a repeatable process, or a specific element, then verify the image produced for the page in question.
