To capture all rows, scroll the list’s own container through its range, let each section render, and take overlapping screenshots. If you need one tall image, check whether the app offers a safe way to render all rows first.
Why a full-page screenshot can miss virtualized rows
Virtualized lists render only the rows near the visible viewport, rather than keeping every row in the DOM. Playwright’s fullPage screenshot option captures the full scrollable page, but a full-page capture does not itself scroll the visual viewport to trigger the list’s scroll-dependent rendering. Rows outside the rendered window can therefore be missing from the image. Playwright documents full-page and element screenshot modes; the viewport behavior is discussed in this Playwright issue.
Choose a capture method
- Ordinary full-page screenshot: Use this for a page whose content is already rendered, or when you only need the current state of a virtualized list.
- Overlapping segments: Scroll the actual list container and capture each visible section. This is the practical route when you need rows across the list’s range while preserving the app’s normal rendering.
- Render all rows temporarily: If the application provides a supported capture mode that disables virtualization, it may allow a single tall image. Verify that this does not change ordering, widths, sticky headers, or other layout. Whether such a mode exists is app-specific.
Capture a virtualized list in Playwright
1. Find the real scroll container
Determine whether the document scrolls or the list sits inside a separately scrolling panel. A page screenshot and an element screenshot are distinct: Playwright can capture the full scrollable page with fullPage, or capture a particular locator as an element screenshot. For a virtualized panel, scrolling and capturing the panel itself is usually the relevant operation.
2. Scroll in overlapping increments
Move the list container by slightly less than its visible height so neighboring screenshots share an overlap. After each movement, wait for the app’s rows and any asynchronous data to settle, then capture the list. The overlap makes it easier to align segments and check for skipped or repeated rows.
#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Here is an illustrative Playwright pattern. Replace the selector and wait condition with ones that match your app; the short timeout is only a placeholder, not a universal guarantee that rendering is complete.
const list = page.locator('[data-testid="virtual-list"]');
const images = [];
// Initial estimate; asynchronous loading may change these values.
let metrics = await list.evaluate(el => ({
scrollHeight: el.scrollHeight,
clientHeight: el.clientHeight,
}));
const overlap = 80;
let top = 0;
while (top < metrics.scrollHeight) {
await list.evaluate((el, y) => { el.scrollTop = y; }, top);
// Replace with an app-specific signal that rows/data/layout are ready.
await page.waitForTimeout(100);
images.push(await list.screenshot());
metrics = await list.evaluate(el => ({
scrollHeight: el.scrollHeight,
clientHeight: el.clientHeight,
}));
const step = Math.max(1, metrics.clientHeight - overlap);
if (top + metrics.clientHeight >= metrics.scrollHeight) break;
top += step;
}
This pattern captures separate images; it does not stitch them into one composite. The exact selector, readiness condition, and end-of-list signal depend on the app. The approach is an inference from viewport-based rendering behavior, not a virtual-list recipe prescribed by Playwright’s API reference.

- CRISP CLARITY: This 22 inch class (21.5″ viewable) Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- 100HZ FAST REFRESH RATE: 100Hz brings your favorite movies and video games to life. Stream, binge, and play effortlessly
- SMOOTH ACTION WITH ADAPTIVE-SYNC: Adaptive-Sync technology ensures fluid action sequences and rapid response time. Every frame will be rendered smoothly with crystal clarity and without stutter
3. Handle changing content and layout
- Infinite loading: The scroll height may grow as records load. Re-read the dimensions while scrolling and use a reliable app-specific signal for the final record or end of list.
- Variable-height rows: Segment boundaries will not necessarily fall between rows. Keep overlap and inspect the joins rather than assuming fixed row heights.
- Sticky headers: A header that remains visible in each screenshot can appear repeatedly. Account for it when aligning segments or choose a capture region that excludes it.
- Images, fonts, and animation: They may settle after the rows first appear. Wait on app-specific readiness where possible, and check that content is not clipped or shifting between captures.
4. Verify coverage before using the result
- Check the first and last expected rows.
- Compare adjacent images at their overlap to confirm continuity.
- Look for repeated, skipped, or clipped rows, especially around segment boundaries.
- If the list loads data asynchronously, verify the new rows appeared before treating a segment as complete.
When ordinary full-page capture is enough
For a non-virtualized page, Playwright’s documented pattern is await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true }). This captures the full scrollable page. For a virtualized list, use that option only if the currently rendered rows are all you need, or you have confirmed the app renders all rows in the capture state.

ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL in one GET request. It removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. These are general URL captures: they do not replace scrolling a virtualized list through its rows, so use the Playwright method above when every virtual row must appear.
