To cancel Xfinity internet cleanly, first check whether your account has a minimum-term commitment, then choose between transferring service and disconnecting it. Set up replacement connectivity before the cutoff if you need continuous access, submit the request through an approved Xfinity channel, return rented equipment within the required period, and audit the final bill. Xfinity does not publish one universal early-termination-fee amount; the agreement attached to your account controls whether a fee applies.
1. Check your Xfinity agreement before choosing a date
Sign in to your Xfinity account and open the Residential Services Agreement or other service agreement attached to the account. Look specifically for a minimum-term commitment, its end date, and any early-termination language. The current 2025 agreement says that ending services covered by a minimum term before that term expires may result in an early termination fee (ETF). Accounts without a minimum term may terminate for any reason at any time after giving the required notice.
There is no single ETF amount that applies to every Xfinity customer. The amount, if any, depends on the terms associated with your account, promotion, or equipment agreement. Do not rely on a fee quoted for a different plan or state. Save a copy or screenshot of the agreement and note the date you reviewed it.
- Record the term status: minimum term, end date, or no minimum term.
- Check promotional conditions: a discounted rate can have separate requirements from the internet service itself.
- List rented equipment: gateways, modems, television boxes, mesh units, power supplies, and remotes may appear on the account separately.
- Note the billing cycle: this helps you compare the eventual final bill with the date service actually ends.
If the agreement is unclear, ask the representative handling the cancellation to read back the applicable term and any charge before you authorize a disconnect. Request that the explanation and your confirmation number be added to the account notes.

2. Decide whether to transfer service or disconnect it
A move does not automatically require cancellation. If your new address is within an area where Comcast/Xfinity service is available, request a transfer and confirm the activation date. Xfinity’s moving FAQ says a transfer can sometimes be arranged as early as the next day, depending on the circumstances. An official Xfinity employee answer updated September 2, 2026, states that transferring within a serviceable area avoids the early-termination fee, although destination availability and your account terms still matter.

When the destination is not serviceable, treat the move as a disconnect and arrange another provider. Do not assume that an address listed as “in the same city” qualifies for a transfer; serviceability is determined for the exact address.
3. Arrange replacement connectivity before the cutoff
If you are switching providers, obtain a firm installation or activation date before you authorize the Xfinity disconnect. For work, school, security systems, medical monitoring, or home-office phones, plan a short overlap rather than scheduling both changes for the same hour. The overlap is a risk-control measure: installation appointments can move, construction can be required, and a new provider may not activate service until its equipment registers on the network.

- Availability: verify the exact service address, not only the ZIP code.
- Activation date: obtain a written appointment window or confirmed self-install date.
- Total recurring price: calculate the post-promotion monthly amount, taxes, and mandatory fees.
- Equipment costs: include gateway rental, modem charges, installation, and one-time activation fees.
- Contract commitment: check whether the replacement plan imposes its own minimum term or cancellation charge.
- Outage and support terms: understand support hours, repair expectations, and any service-level commitment offered to your account.
If you cannot obtain a firm activation date, keep Xfinity active until the replacement connection works. A brief overlap costs more than a gap, but it prevents relying on a mobile hotspot or public Wi-Fi for an unknown period.
4. Submit the cancellation request and lock down the effective date
Use the current cancellation workflow shown in your Xfinity account or one of the notice channels authorized by your Residential Services Agreement. Interface labels and contact routes can change, so follow the path presented for your account rather than an old phone number or third-party instruction.

- Authenticate the account. Have the account holder available, along with the service address and the last four digits of the payment method if requested for verification.
- State the requested action precisely. Say whether you want a full disconnect, a transfer, or cancellation of only a particular service. Give the desired effective date and time zone.
- Ask for the account-specific charges. Request the representative to state any ETF, remaining equipment balance, installation-related amount, or other charge before the request is finalized.
- Confirm equipment instructions. Ask which serial-numbered items are recorded as returns and whether any device is being replaced or transferred.
- Obtain a confirmation number. Save the number, the representative’s name or identification if provided, the date and time, and the effective disconnect date.
- Request written confirmation. Keep the email, chat transcript, or account message showing the scheduled date and the instructions for the final bill.
Do not treat a conversation that merely discusses cancellation as a completed request. Before ending the interaction, ask: “What exact date will service stop, and what date will billing stop?” If those dates differ, have the representative explain why and record both.
5. Return rented equipment within ten days
The current Xfinity Residential Services Agreement requires all Xfinity equipment to be returned to a local service center or designated agent within 10 days after the date services are disconnected. Equipment must be in working order apart from normal wear and tear.

- Collect every Xfinity-owned device at the property, including the gateway or modem, mesh pods, television boxes, remotes, power adapters, and cables supplied with the equipment.
- Separate your personally owned router, switches, access points, and cables so they are not surrendered accidentally.
- Photograph each device’s serial number and physical condition before handing it over.
- Use an Xfinity service center, designated drop-off agent, or the shipping method Xfinity provides for your account.
Keep proof until the account is closed
Obtain a dated store receipt, shipping receipt, or tracking number that identifies the package. Keep the proof until the final bill shows the equipment as returned. If a return misses the deadline, Xfinity may add an unreturned-equipment fee. The agreement says that returning the undamaged equipment later can result in a full refund of that fee, so retain the tracking evidence and request the adjustment if a charge appears.
Returning a device does not by itself cancel service. The disconnect must be recorded separately, and the equipment receipt should be matched to the account number rather than left as an unlinked drop-off.
6. Audit the final bill instead of assuming the last invoice is ordinary
Xfinity warns that a final bill can contain items not present on earlier monthly statements. Review it against your confirmation, agreement, and equipment proof as soon as it is issued.

Pay an undisputed balance by its due date while you challenge a disputed line. Ignoring the entire invoice can create a separate delinquency even when one charge is wrong.
7. Resolve an unexpected fee or missing credit
Start with an account-level correction
Contact Xfinity support with the account number, cancellation confirmation, effective disconnect date, agreement language, and equipment-return proof. Describe one discrepancy at a time—for example, “the gateway was delivered on this tracking date but remains listed as unreturned.” Ask the representative to read back the case number and the promised adjustment or investigation date.
Keep a chronological log of contacts. Include the date, channel, representative, case number, documents supplied, and the result promised. This prevents a later representative from treating the issue as a new, undocumented request.
Escalate an unresolved billing or service dispute
If support does not correct a billing or service problem, the FCC Consumer Complaints Center is an available escalation channel. Submit the confirmation, invoices, and return evidence, and describe the resolution you requested. An FCC complaint does not replace checking the contract or paying an undisputed balance; it creates an additional review path after you have attempted to resolve the matter with Xfinity.
8. A practical cancellation timeline
Several days before the requested date
- Verify the minimum-term status and save the relevant agreement pages.
- Confirm transfer eligibility or book the replacement provider.
- Choose an overlap period if uninterrupted connectivity matters.
- Inventory and photograph all Xfinity-owned equipment.
On the day you submit the request
- Give the exact disconnect or transfer date.
- Obtain the confirmation number and written instructions.
- Verify which services and devices are included in the request.
- Test the replacement connection if it has already been installed.
Immediately after disconnection
- Package the equipment and return it using the approved method.
- Save the receipt or tracking record in two locations.

You are changing providers at the same address
Schedule the new provider’s activation before selecting the Xfinity cutoff. Keep both services active long enough to verify that the new connection reaches the speeds and locations you need. Once it works, submit the Xfinity cancellation, return its equipment, and use the final-bill audit above.
You have no minimum term but want to avoid a gap
The absence of a minimum term removes the contract-based ETF risk described in the agreement, but it does not install a replacement connection. Treat activation timing, equipment return, and final-bill review as separate tasks and schedule them independently.
10. Records to retain
Keep a single folder—digital or paper—with the agreement, screenshots of the account status, cancellation confirmation, chat transcript or call notes, equipment serial-number photos, return receipt or tracking history, final bill, and every support case number.
