To cancel Netflix, open Manage your membership, select Cancel, and then choose Finish Cancellation. Netflix sends a confirmation email. Your service normally continues until the end of the current billing period, and Netflix says it keeps viewing activity, recommendations, ratings, account details, gameplay history, and qualifying game saves for 24 months after the account closes so you can restart the same account. Request a copy of your data before cancelling if you need an offline record.
What cancellation changes—and what it does not
Cancellation stops the next recurring charge; it does not usually shut off viewing immediately. If you cancel while time remains in a paid billing period, Netflix normally lets you watch until that period ends. The account then closes unless you restart it. The exact end date is the one shown in your account’s billing information, not necessarily the calendar day on which you press Cancel.
Signing out, removing Netflix from a phone or television, or deleting the app does not cancel the subscription. Those actions only remove local access. A subscription can continue billing while the app is absent from every device, so cancellation must be completed in the membership settings or with the company that processes the payment.
Netflix’s Help Center instructions are country-sensitive. Labels, available plans, pause eligibility, and payment arrangements can differ by jurisdiction. If the account page sends you to another company to manage billing, that payment partner—not Netflix—is the place where cancellation must be completed.

Cancel Netflix from the account settings
- Sign in to the Netflix account in a web browser and open Manage your membership. A mobile browser can be used if the app does not expose the account controls.
- Select Cancel. Review the date on which access is expected to end and any on-screen explanation of the change.
- Select Finish Cancellation. Stopping at the first Cancel button does not complete the process.
- Wait for Netflix’s cancellation confirmation email and keep it with your billing records.
- Return to the account page and verify that the membership is marked as cancelled or scheduled to end. Until the stated end date, you can generally continue using the service.
If there is no Cancel option, do not assume the account is already cancelled. The subscription may have been started or is being billed through a payment partner. Follow the partner’s cancellation procedure, then look for that provider’s confirmation as well as any Netflix notice.
Check the billing date before you cancel
Before submitting the cancellation, open Payment History and note the current billing-period end date. This date tells you how long the paid access is expected to remain available and helps distinguish a legitimate final charge from a later renewal.
For example, cancelling on the 10th when the paid period ends on the 15th should leave five days of scheduled access. Cancelling on the 16th, after a renewal on the 15th, normally places the next end date roughly one billing period later. These are illustrations of how a billing cycle works; use the date displayed on your account for the actual result.

- Check your bank or card statement after the end date for an unexpected renewal.
- If a payment partner is involved, record the partner’s cancellation reference too.
Make an offline copy of your Netflix data
Netflix lets the account owner request a downloadable copy of personal information while the account is still accessible. Start at https://www.netflix.com/account/getmyinfo. The request is associated with the account owner, so a profile user who is not the owner may not be able to submit it.
What the request can contain
Netflix describes the export as including account-owner information, plan selection, notification and privacy settings, payment and billing information, profiles, viewing activity, ratings, and device-access information from the last 90 days. The exact files and fields supplied can depend on the account and applicable law.

How long the export takes
Netflix says a verified request may take up to 30 days. That is a maximum stated by the service, not a promise that every request will arrive on the thirtieth day. Submit it before cancelling if you need the copy for personal records, a move to another service, or an audit of devices that have recently used the account.
A safe order of operations
- Submit the data request and complete any identity-verification steps Netflix presents.
- Save the request confirmation and note when the 30-day window began.
- When the export arrives, store it in an encrypted location and limit access because it can include billing, profile, viewing, and device information.
- Check Payment History for the paid-through date.
- Complete the Netflix cancellation steps and retain the cancellation email.
The export is a copy for you; it does not change Netflix’s retention schedule and it does not itself cancel the membership.

What Netflix keeps after the account closes
Netflix’s current Help Center cancellation guidance, retrieved October 19, 2026, says: “We keep your Viewing Activity for 24 months after your account closes, so it will be available if you restart within that time.” The same guidance says these items remain available for 24 months:
- Viewing activity
- Personalized recommendations
- Ratings
- Account details
- Gameplay history
- Game saves, subject to the cloud-save limitation below
This means a cancellation can be reversible without rebuilding every profile preference, provided you restart the same account within the stated 24-month period. It is not a promise that every piece of information is preserved forever, nor is it a promise that all records disappear as soon as the account closes.
Game-save limitation
Netflix qualifies the game-save statement: games without cloud saves require the game and its data to remain installed on the device. If you uninstall such a game, replace the device, or erase its local storage, the account-level 24-month retention statement cannot restore that device-only data.

Retention is not immediate deletion
Netflix’s retention notice says it retains personal information as required or permitted by applicable laws and regulations, to honor choices, for billing or records purposes, and as otherwise necessary for the purposes described in its Privacy Statement. Consequently, cancelling stops the membership but should not be treated as an immediate-erasure request. Country-specific privacy rights and legal obligations can affect what is retained and for how long.
Restarting the same account later
If you decide to return, use the original account credentials and restart the membership before the 24-month retention window expires. Netflix says the listed viewing activity, recommendations, ratings, account details, gameplay history, and qualifying saves will be available if you restart within that period.
Restarting is different from creating a new account. A new account has no reason to contain the old profile history, while restarting the original account is the path Netflix documents for recovering the retained information. Netflix may ask you to choose a current plan and payment method when you restart; the options shown then are governed by the plans available in your country at that time.
If you changed the email address or password after cancelling, use the updated credentials. If you no longer control the account email, recover access before attempting a restart; otherwise, the retained data may remain attached to an account you cannot verify.
Canceling when a payment partner controls billing
Netflix may not display a cancellation control when another company handles the subscription charge. Common signs are a message directing you to manage billing elsewhere or an account page that shows no Netflix cancellation option. In that case:

- Identify the payment partner named in the Netflix account or on the billing statement.
- Open that partner’s subscription-management page or app and follow its cancellation workflow.
- Complete the partner’s final confirmation step and save its receipt or reference number.
- Return to Netflix after a reasonable processing interval and verify the membership’s end date.
Do not cancel a second time through an unrelated account or payment method. If the partner still shows an active subscription after you completed its process, use the partner’s support route with the saved reference and billing date.
Compare cancellation, pausing, and changing the billing arrangement
Cancellation is not the only way to stop regular use. Netflix documents pausing as a separate option for eligible plans and payment methods. Linking an existing account to a package can also change who bills you while retaining account preferences. Availability is country- and plan-dependent.

Choose one path deliberately. Pausing or changing billing is not the same as cancelling, and a partner’s terms can supersede the controls shown in Netflix’s own account page.

Cancellation does not automatically sign every device out or prevent someone who still knows the password from restarting the membership. If preventing an unwanted restart matters, Netflix recommends changing the password and selecting Sign out of all devices.

- Use Sign out of all devices from the account security controls.
- Update the password stored in browsers, televisions, streaming boxes, and password managers.
- Tell household members that the membership is scheduled to end so they do not mistake a final-access day for an active renewal.
These security actions protect access; they do not replace the cancellation confirmation. Keep both records.

Troubleshooting common cancellation problems
The app has been deleted, but charges continue
Deleting the app does not send a cancellation request. Reinstalling it is unnecessary; sign in through the account page and complete Cancel followed by Finish Cancellation, or cancel with the payment partner shown for the account.
There is no Cancel button
Check whether billing is controlled by a partner, whether you are signed into the correct account, and whether another household member owns the subscription. A missing button is not proof that the account has already ended.
The confirmation email has not arrived
Check the account email address, spam and junk folders, and the membership status shown in the account. If the status still appears active after the requested cancellation, use the displayed billing owner or payment partner and keep screenshots or receipts of the steps you completed.
A charge appears after cancellation
Compare the charge date with the paid-through date and the cancellation confirmation. A charge posted for the period that was already in progress can be the final scheduled payment; a new charge after the displayed end date indicates that the billing status needs investigation with the payment owner.
You cannot access the old account to restart it
Recover the account using its current sign-in details before creating anything new. Creating a replacement account can separate future activity from the retained history that Netflix associates with the original account.
Country, privacy, and timing cautions
Netflix directs readers to select a country in its Help Center, and the available instructions can vary by jurisdiction. Payment-partner rules, pause eligibility, privacy rights, and the practical timing of account closure are therefore not universal. The 24-month retention period, the up-to-30-day verified data request, and the 90-day device-activity description are the figures in Netflix’s current guidance retrieved October 19, 2026; treat them as policy guidance for the applicable country, not as a guarantee that every region exposes identical screens.
If you need deletion rather than cancellation, review the privacy choices available for your country and distinguish a deletion request from ending a paid membership. Legal, billing, fraud-prevention, and record-keeping obligations can require Netflix to retain some information even after a cancellation or privacy request.

Final cancellation checklist
- Confirm which company bills the account.
- Record the paid-through date in Payment History.
- Request the account-data copy at https://www.netflix.com/account/getmyinfo if you need an offline archive.
- Allow up to 30 days for a verified data request.
- Open Manage your membership, select Cancel, and select Finish Cancellation.
- Save Netflix’s confirmation email and verify the scheduled end date.
- Change the password and sign out of all devices if an unwanted restart is a concern.
- Restart the original account within 24 months if you want Netflix’s retained viewing activity and related data to be available.
