Find who manages the subscription
Start with the account where you signed up, the purchase receipt, or the name shown on your payment statement. The company whose service you use may not be the company that processes billing. If you subscribed through an app marketplace or another intermediary, use that billing manager’s account and cancellation instructions. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises consumers to contact the company that runs the subscription; the correct route depends on how you bought it. FTC consumer guidance on subscriptions
Use the provider’s current instructions rather than assuming every service has the same menu labels or cancellation button. If you cannot find the option, look in the provider’s help center or contact its support team and ask how to cancel online.
Cancel and keep a record
- Open the account or billing service that manages the subscription. Sign in using the account tied to the purchase, then follow the provider’s cancellation instructions.
- Complete every required step. Some services may ask you to confirm your choice or provide a reason. Do not assume the subscription is canceled until the provider indicates the request is complete.
- Save evidence. Keep a copy of the request, any confirmation email or screen, and relevant account-status information. Note the date and method of any support conversation and what was discussed. The FTC advises: “Keep a copy of your cancellation request, along with notes about any conversations you had about canceling.” FTC consumer guidance
Check what cancellation means for access and billing
Read the status message and any effective date the provider displays. A cancellation may stop the next renewal while access continues through a paid period, or the provider may state a different end date. Timing, access, and refund eligibility depend on the service; do not assume that cancellation ends access immediately or automatically refunds a payment.

Keep the confirmation with your other records, but do not treat a single screen or email as proof that no later charge can appear. The practical check is to review your payment account after cancellation and look for further recurring charges. The FTC recommends watching account statements after you cancel. FTC consumer guidance
If the provider makes online cancellation difficult
If you see an error, cannot complete the process, or cannot locate the cancellation route, save screenshots or other available records of what happened. Contact the company that runs the subscription and ask it to cancel; record when and how you contacted support and keep any reply. Be precise in your message: identify the subscription, say that you want it canceled, and ask for written confirmation and the effective date. If you are contacting an intermediary, make clear that it is the billing manager for the subscription.
If another charge appears after you canceled
- Gather the records. Find your cancellation request or confirmation, support notes, account-status evidence, and the payment statement showing the charge.
- Contact the subscription company. Ask why the charge occurred and request that billing stop. Keep a record of the response.
- Contact your card issuer about disputing the charge. Explain that you asked to cancel and provide the supporting records. Follow the issuer’s process and deadlines.
- Report unresolved problems. The FTC says consumers can report subscription problems to the FTC or their state attorney general. FTC consumer guidance FTC consumer alert
What the FTC click-to-cancel rule status means
Do not rely on the FTC’s 2024 broad “click-to-cancel” amendments as a current federal requirement. The Eighth Circuit vacated those amendments in July 2025, and the FTC’s rule page records a February 2026 final rule restoring the text that preceded them. The FTC’s consumer advice still recommends that businesses explain cancellation and make it simple, and its practical guidance can help when a cancellation attempt fails. State laws, rules for particular industries, and other federal protections may also apply; requirements depend on the circumstances and location.
