Yes, you can often cancel a PlayStation preorder, but the deadline and refund depend on who charged you and how far the order has progressed. For a PlayStation Store digital preorder, request the refund before release while the main game has not downloaded, streamed, or preloaded. If payment was taken more than 14 days before release, the current PlayStation policy generally allows a request at any time before release. If payment was taken 14 days or less before release, the usual limit is 14 days from purchase. PlayStation Direct and retail stores use different cutoffs based on shipping, processing, packaging, or return windows.
Start by checking the charge on your receipt or bank statement. Then use the matching procedure below, stop any digital download, and keep the order number and cancellation confirmation.
First, identify where the preorder was purchased
The seller that charged you controls the cancellation and refund. A PlayStation game may be sold through several separate systems:
- PlayStation Store: a digital game, add-on, or bundle tied to your PlayStation account.
- PlayStation Direct: physical hardware, games, accessories, or other products ordered through direct.playstation.com.
- Retailer: a physical or digital preorder from a store such as GameStop, Best Buy, Walmart, or Amazon.
- Marketplace or local store: the individual seller or branch may set the operative terms, even when the order appears in a larger retailer’s account.
Do not use a PlayStation Store refund form for a retailer order, or a retailer cancellation button for a PlayStation account purchase. The transaction history, receipt, or card statement will show which rules apply.

PlayStation Store digital preorders
When a digital preorder is usually refundable
PlayStation’s current refund guidance separates preorders by the date payment was taken and whether the main product has been downloaded or preloaded:

These are policy windows, not a guarantee that every transaction will be approved. Region, product type, payment method, bundles, and local consumer law can affect the result. The request must also concern an eligible PlayStation Store purchase.
Why preloading can remove the change-of-mind option
If the main part of the preorder has started downloading, streaming, or preloading, PlayStation generally treats a change-of-mind refund as unavailable. The stated exception is when the item is faulty. A preload can begin automatically before release, so leaving the console configured for automatic downloads can affect eligibility even if you have not opened the game.

Canceling the game therefore may remove access to early digital items, themes, or other bonus content already made available to the account.
Stop an automatic download before requesting a refund
- On the console, check the game page and download notifications for the preorder.
- Pause or cancel any active download.
- Review automatic-download settings and disable the preorder’s automatic download if the console offers that control.
- Do not start the game, stream the main content, or redeem an included code while you decide.
- Submit the refund request as soon as possible, before release and before the main content begins downloading.
Stopping a download does not reverse content that has already started downloading or streaming. It is a precaution for an order that has not yet begun delivery.
How to request the refund
- Open your PlayStation account’s Transaction History.
- Select the preorder transaction.
- Choose Request Refund and follow the on-screen instructions.
- If the transaction is not offered as eligible, use the PlayStation Support online assistant or contact PlayStation Support.
PlayStation describes eligibility as depending on the type of product and says a refund may be available when you have changed your mind. The transaction page is the fastest way to see whether the specific purchase is currently offered a request option.

If the request button is missing
- Confirm that you are signed in to the account that paid for the preorder.
- Check whether the main game or other primary content has downloaded, streamed, or preloaded.
- Check the purchase date against the 14-day rule and the scheduled release date.
- Look for a separate transaction for a preorder bonus, season pass, or bundle component.
- Use the support assistant with the transaction date, order number, product name, and explanation that the product has not been downloaded, if that is true.
Do not create a second charge or repurchase the game while the first request is pending. Save screenshots of the transaction status and any support case number.

Cancel before the shipping process
For a PlayStation Direct order, sign in at direct.playstation.com, open My Orders or Order Look Up, select the preorder, and choose Cancel. PlayStation Direct says cancellation prevents the order from being processed and shipped. Once the order has been processed, the cancellation option is no longer available.
The PlayStation Direct preorder FAQ says a preorder can generally be canceled until the item enters the shipping process, usually about six days before the currently scheduled release date. “Usually” matters: a changed release date, an unusual fulfillment schedule, or a product-specific status can move the practical cutoff. Use the order page’s current status rather than relying only on the calendar.
If the Direct order has shipped
The stated PlayStation Direct return period is 30 days from the date the item ships, provided the preorder item is unopened. Follow the return instructions associated with the order. Opening or using the product can affect whether it qualifies for that return route.
Retailer preorder cancellation rules
Retailer policies differ more than PlayStation’s digital rules. The key status words are processing, packaged, and shipped. Cancel while the retailer still shows an active cancellation control; after that, the remedy may become a return.

GameStop
GameStop says an order can be canceled only before it is packaged and ready for shipment. If the Cancel Order button is missing, GameStop says the order is too far along for cancellation, including through customer service. The cancellation help page displayed a last-updated date of April 23, 2026.

For an online pickup preorder, an eligible cancellation before release or within 30 days after release is refunded to the original payment method. After that 30-day period, GameStop says the refund becomes a digital gift card. An in-store preorder must be handled through the store where the reservation was made; an online account request is not a substitute for the store’s process.
Best Buy
Best Buy’s entertainment preorder FAQ says an order can be canceled any time before it ships. If it has already shipped, the item must be unopened for a full refund, and return shipping may be charged.
Best Buy’s general cancellation table adds timing detail for preorders: an order placed at least five days before release can be canceled while it remains on preorder. For an order placed within five days of release, the deadline depends on the selected shipping method. If the cancellation control is gone, use the retailer’s return process instead of repeatedly submitting cancellation attempts.

To try to cancel a Walmart order, sign in, open Account > Purchase history, select the order, and choose Request Cancellation when that option is available. Walmart says most orders can be canceled before processing. Once an order has shipped, return it under the applicable return procedure.
Marketplace orders may not be cancellable through Walmart’s standard workflow because the marketplace seller controls fulfillment. Check the seller information on the order before assuming Walmart’s normal timing applies.
For a cancellation before shipment, Walmart says the payment authorization hold is released. For returns paid with a debit or credit card, the refund typically appears within seven days and is sent to the original card when possible. An authorization release may look different from a posted refund because the original charge can simply disappear or be reduced.

Amazon: service-specific examples only
Amazon cancellation rules depend on the service and seller. The available Amazon examples are not a universal policy for every physical preorder or every Amazon Marketplace order.

The table shows why the seller’s current order status matters more than a single universal “preorder deadline.” A digital-use event, processing state, packaging state, shipment, or release date can each be the decisive trigger.

Original payment method, wallet, hold, or gift card
Refund destination is not uniform. A retailer may return money to the original card, release an authorization hold, issue a wallet balance, or convert a late cancellation into a gift card. GameStop’s online pickup rule specifically changes to a digital gift card after its 30-day post-release period. Walmart distinguishes a released authorization hold from a card refund. Keep the payment card or account open until the transaction finishes when practical.
How long to wait
Published timing varies by service: Walmart says card refunds typically appear within seven days, Buy with Prime says 3–5 business days after confirmation, and Amazon Luna says processing takes a few business days. These are expectations, not guarantees; banks, weekends, holidays, and the difference between a pending authorization and a posted refund can change what you see.
If the stated period has passed, contact the seller with the order number, cancellation timestamp, refund amount, payment method, and any confirmation email. Ask whether the amount was refunded, the authorization was released, or the transaction is still pending with the payment processor.

Bundles, bonuses, deposits, and marketplace orders
Several conditions can change the normal result:
- Bundles: a bundle may contain separate transactions or components. Downloading one component can affect the treatment of the whole purchase.
- Preorder bonuses: immediately accessible bonuses can be disabled after cancellation, and redeeming a code can count as using part of the purchase.
- Deposits: a physical-store reservation deposit may have different terms from an online order. Ask the exact store where the reservation was placed.
- Marketplace sellers: the individual seller may control cancellation, shipping, and returns even when the order appears inside a major retailer’s account.
- Promotions and payment wallets: promotional credits, wallet funds, and mixed payment methods can produce separate refund entries or different destinations.
- Local law: consumer-protection rights vary by country or region and can override or supplement a merchant’s standard policy.
Read the terms attached to the exact order, not only a general help page for a different product category.
A practical cancellation checklist
- Find the receipt, order number, seller name, release date, and payment date.
- Confirm whether the order is digital, physical, marketplace, pickup, or store-reserved.
- For a digital PlayStation Store order, stop automatic downloads and do not download, stream, preload, redeem, or launch the main content.
- Submit the cancellation through the seller’s named path: Transaction History for PlayStation Store; My Orders or Order Look Up for PlayStation Direct; the retailer’s order page for a retail purchase.
- If the button is unavailable, record the displayed status and contact the seller promptly.
- Save confirmation emails, screenshots, chat transcripts, and support case numbers.
- Monitor the original payment method for the seller’s stated processing period.
- If shipment has already occurred, keep the item unopened when the return policy requires that condition and start the return process.
Common failure points and the right response
The game began preloading
Pause the download and contact PlayStation Support, but expect that a change-of-mind refund may no longer qualify. Explain whether only a bonus downloaded or whether the main content began downloading; the policy distinguishes the main product from immediately accessible extras.
The retailer removed the cancel button
This normally means the order has crossed that seller’s processing, packaging, or shipment cutoff. Do not assume customer service can override it. Check the return instructions, unopened requirement, return deadline, and any shipping charge.
The payment still appears as a charge
Determine whether it is a pending authorization or a completed charge. Walmart, for example, says a pre-shipment cancellation releases the authorization hold. A bank may take time to remove a pending entry even when the seller has already released it.
The release date changed
Recheck the order page and recalculate any date-based window. PlayStation Direct’s approximate six-day shipping cutoff is tied to the currently scheduled release date, while PlayStation Store eligibility also depends on when payment was taken relative to release.
The order was placed through a marketplace
Open the seller details and contact the marketplace seller using the order’s own messaging or return workflow. The platform’s standard cancellation path may not apply.
When to escalate
Escalate when the seller’s page shows an eligible action but the control fails, a promised refund does not arrive after the stated processing period, the wrong amount is returned, or the product was faulty rather than merely unwanted. Provide one concise record containing the order number, transaction date, release date, cancellation attempt time, download or shipment status, payment method, and screenshots. If local consumer law gives you a right that the standard policy does not address, consult the relevant consumer-protection authority or payment provider.
