Check the game’s revised release date first. Nintendo’s standard eShop cancellation option is normally available until payment is processed and preloading starts—no later than seven days before the current release date. On a Switch, open Nintendo eShop, go to your account’s Your Pre-Orders list, and select Cancel. You can also cancel from Nintendo Account in a browser. If the button is missing, contact Nintendo Support; the U.S. guidance provides an escalation path but does not promise an automatic refund merely because a game was delayed.
What changes when a preorder is delayed?
A delay can move the date on which Nintendo will charge and preload a digital preorder. The important date is the game’s current release date shown in Nintendo eShop or Nintendo Account, not necessarily the date advertised when you placed the order. Nintendo’s U.S. FAQ says a preorder can be canceled before payment is processed and the game is preloaded, “up to 7 days before the game’s release date.” It also says the charge occurs “no sooner than 7 days prior to the game’s release date.” Read Nintendo’s preorder FAQ.
For example, if a game moved from June 20 to July 18, the practical self-service deadline moves with it. Do not rely on the original date or on a publisher’s social-media announcement; open the preorder record and check the date and status tied to your Nintendo Account.

- Account: You must sign in with the Nintendo Account that placed the preorder.
- Timing: The current release date must be at least seven days away for the ordinary cancellation window.
- Payment: Nintendo must not have processed the preorder charge.
- Preload: The game must not have begun preloading on your console.
- Transaction type: These rules apply to a digital Nintendo Switch eShop preorder, not a physical Nintendo Store purchase.
Meeting the date requirement alone is not enough. Nintendo describes cancellation as available before both payment processing and preloading. A title that is more than seven days away can still lack a cancel option if the transaction has already advanced, so check the status shown in your account.

Cancel on a Nintendo Switch
Use the console associated with the Nintendo Account that made the purchase. The menu labels below are Nintendo’s documented path.
- Open Nintendo eShop from the HOME Menu.
- Select the user profile that placed the preorder. Choosing another profile will show that user’s purchases instead.
- Select the user icon in the upper-right corner to open Account Information.
- Scroll to Your Pre-Orders.
- Find the delayed game and select Cancel beside it.
- If identity authentication is enabled, enter the requested account password or PIN.

What should happen after cancellation
The preorder should disappear from the active preorder list or show that it has been canceled. Because the standard eShop process does not charge until the final seven-day period, a successful cancellation normally prevents that future charge. Keep the confirmation screen or email for your records, especially if the release date has changed more than once.

- Go to accounts.nintendo.com and sign in.
- Use the Nintendo Account that placed the preorder.
- Select Purchase History.
- In the Pre-orders section, select View pre-orders.
- Locate the delayed game and select Cancel.
The browser and console manage the same Nintendo Account transaction. If you cancel successfully in one place, you should not attempt to submit a second cancellation from the other; instead, refresh the account and verify the order’s status.
The seven-day rule, payment and preload
Nintendo’s wording combines a date cutoff with two transaction events. The following table shows how to interpret them.

Nintendo states that payment is taken no sooner than seven days before release, not necessarily at exactly seven days. The date is therefore a latest boundary rather than a promise of a particular hour. A delay can move that boundary, but the account record is the authoritative place to check whether your order is still cancelable.
If the Cancel button is missing
Do not assume that a missing button means the game was not delayed correctly or that you are looking at the wrong date. Work through these checks in order.

1. Confirm the Nintendo Account
Sign out and back in with the account that received the preorder confirmation. Family members can have separate Nintendo Accounts on the same Switch, and each account has its own purchase history. On the console, return to the HOME Menu and reopen Nintendo eShop under the correct user.
2. Check both the date and transaction status
Look at the preorder entry rather than an old email, wish-list entry or third-party listing. Confirm the revised release date, whether payment is shown as processed, and whether the software has started preloading. If the date is within seven days or either transaction event has occurred, the normal self-service control may no longer be available.
3. Refresh the account view
Close and reopen Nintendo eShop, or sign out of the browser and sign in again. This can correct a stale account page, but it cannot reopen a window that has already closed. Do not delete the user profile or the game data while troubleshooting; those actions do not reverse a purchase.

4. Contact Nintendo Support
Nintendo’s cancellation article says, “If you are unable to cancel the pre-order, please contact us for assistance.” Use the support route in that article and provide enough information for the agent to locate the transaction:

- The Nintendo Account email address or account identifier requested by support (do not post it publicly).
- The exact game title and edition.
- The original release date and the revised release date.
- Whether a charge has appeared and when.
- Whether the software has begun preloading.
- What you see in Your Pre-Orders or Purchase History, including the absence of the Cancel control.
Support can explain the available remedy for that transaction. The cited U.S. guidance does not guarantee that a refund will be approved after payment or preload, so describe the facts accurately rather than assuming the delay creates an automatic entitlement.
What if Nintendo already charged you?
A completed charge means the order is no longer in the ordinary “cancel before payment” stage. The seven-day rule is tied to when Nintendo processes payment and begins preloading, so a charge can close the self-service path even if you did not notice the release-date change.
First, verify the charge in your Nintendo Account purchase history and check whether the title was preloaded. Then contact Nintendo Support with the details listed above. Do not request a chargeback from your card issuer as a first step: a payment dispute can complicate account support and does not guarantee that the digital license will be reversed. Nintendo, rather than the card issuer, can tell you whether a post-charge cancellation or refund is available for your region and transaction.
Delayed digital preorder versus a physical Nintendo Store purchase
These transactions follow different payment and cancellation arrangements. Nintendo’s purchase overview says eShop preorders are digital purchases that are not charged until seven days before release, while physical pre-purchases from Nintendo Store are charged immediately and require contacting support to cancel. Check your confirmation email and order history if you are unsure which type you bought. A boxed copy, physical bundle or Nintendo Store item should not be treated as an eShop preorder simply because the same game also has a digital edition.
Does a delay guarantee a refund?
For U.S. customers, the Nintendo pages cited here explain when an eShop preorder can be canceled and how to contact support when the control is unavailable. They do not state that a release delay automatically triggers a refund. If the Cancel button is still available, use it before the cutoff. If payment has already been processed, ask support about the specific order instead of assuming that the revised date alone guarantees reimbursement.
Keep the original and revised dates, payment status and preload status together when you contact support. Those facts establish whether the order is still within Nintendo’s documented cancellation conditions and help distinguish a delayed, unpaid preorder from a completed digital purchase.

UK-specific cancellation and consumer-law information
Nintendo’s UK documentation describes a voluntary right to cancel a software preorder up to seven days before release. It also separately discusses a statutory 14-day cancellation right for digital content. That statutory period can end earlier when digital performance begins, provided the customer expressly consented to immediate performance and acknowledged losing the cancellation right.
These are UK-specific terms, not a universal rule for every country. Read Nintendo’s UK explanations for the exact wording: voluntary right to cancel a UK eShop software preorder and UK eShop preorder and preload FAQ. Customers elsewhere should consult the terms for their country and applicable local consumer law; do not apply the UK statutory explanation automatically to a U.S. or other-region account.
A practical checklist for a delayed preorder
- Open Nintendo eShop or Nintendo Account and record the current release date.
- Confirm that you are using the Nintendo Account that placed the order.
- Check whether the game is more than seven days from release.
- Look for evidence that payment was processed or preloading began.
- If the Cancel control appears, cancel and save the confirmation.
- If it does not appear, capture the order details and contact Nintendo Support promptly.
- For a physical purchase, use Nintendo Store support rather than the eShop preorder menu.
- If you are in the UK, consider the separate voluntary and statutory rights described in Nintendo’s UK terms.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the original release date: A delay changes the date that governs the seven-day timing window.
- Choosing the wrong Switch user: The preorder belongs to the purchasing Nintendo Account.
- Confusing an eShop preorder with a physical order: Physical pre-purchases are charged immediately and use a different support process.
- Waiting for an automatic refund: The U.S. guidance does not promise one solely because a game was delayed.
- Assuming seven days means an exact processing time: Nintendo says payment occurs no sooner than seven days before release; the account status determines what is currently possible.
- Deleting software to cancel it: Removing a download or user profile does not cancel the underlying transaction.
The Bottom Line
For a delayed Nintendo Switch eShop preorder, cancel from Account Information > Your Pre-Orders on the Switch or from Purchase History > View pre-orders at accounts.nintendo.com. The ordinary option ends when payment is processed and preloading begins, no later than seven days before the current release date.
