Correct HDR calibration is a sequence, not a universal brightness number: put the display in its low-latency Game mode, enable HDR for the console input, choose the display’s documented HGiG or tone-mapping behavior, connect the console directly, and then run the matching console wizard. Re-run the wizard whenever you change the picture mode, tone mapping, HDMI port, cable, receiver, soundbar passthrough, HDR format, or display firmware.
There is no single slider value that is correct for every television or monitor. The right result depends on the panel’s peak brightness, its tone-mapping implementation, the HDMI path, console settings and the game’s own HDR controls.
Before calibrating: establish a known signal path
Calibration only has meaning when the display and connection are fixed first. A receiver or soundbar that changes the signal, a different HDMI input, or a new tone-mapping mode can invalidate the console’s previous adjustments.
1. Select Game mode and enable HDR
- Set the television or monitor input used by the console to its low-latency Game mode (sometimes called a game preset).
- Enable HDR for that HDMI input. Some displays enable it automatically when an HDR signal arrives; others expose an HDMI “enhanced,” “deep color” or similar bandwidth option.
- Disable picture processing that changes the game image unpredictably, such as dynamic contrast, vivid color presets or automatic energy saving, unless the display manufacturer specifically requires it for HDR.
- Open the display’s HDR gaming or tone-mapping control. If it offers HGiG, note the setting you choose because the console wizard must be run with that setting active.
2. Connect the console directly while calibrating
Connect the PS5 or Xbox directly to the TV or monitor. Use the cable supplied with the console, or a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K at 120 Hz. For 4K/120 Hz, use the display’s HDMI 2.1-capable input; not every HDMI socket on a television supports the same bandwidth.

After calibration you can restore a receiver or soundbar in the chain, but verify the signal again. A device that does not pass the required HDR format, 4K resolution, 120 Hz refresh rate or HDCP 2.2 can produce a different image or make HDR unavailable.
3. Stabilize the display before running a wizard
Install current display firmware and leave the panel in the exact picture mode you intend to use for games. Do not calibrate in a temporary “Cinema” mode and then switch to Game mode; each mode can have different luminance and tone-mapping behavior.
PS5 HDR calibration
PS5 provides two HDR choices and a dedicated adjustment wizard. Use the wizard only after the display steps above are complete.

Choose how PS5 handles SDR content
- Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR.
- Select On When Supported if you want HDR games and apps in HDR while non-HDR games and apps remain SDR.
- Use Always On only if you deliberately want the PS5 to convert non-HDR games and apps to an HDR output. This conversion is not the same as native HDR.
Run Adjust HDR
- Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Adjust HDR.
- Complete every on-screen pattern. Adjust the control only as instructed by the pattern; do not choose a value because it looks brighter in a static menu.
- Finish all screens and leave the television in the same Game mode and HGiG or tone-mapping state used during the wizard.
Sony describes this process as a fine brightness adjustment intended to optimize HDR rendering. It is a console-to-display match, not a universal recommendation for a particular number of presses or a fixed luminance value.
Confirm the PS5 output
In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, inspect Current Video Output Signal and the connected HDMI device information. Confirm the reported resolution, HDR status, VRR capability and refresh-rate information match what your display is supposed to support.
PS5 settings for 4K/120 Hz HDR
- Set Resolution to Auto or 2160p, depending on the display and your preference.
- Use the display’s HDMI 2.1-capable port.
- Use the included PS5 cable or a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz.
- Keep the television’s firmware current.
- If 4K/120 Hz flickers, Sony documents Video Transfer Rate -1 or -2 as a way to limit bandwidth. This can improve stability, but it may reduce the available video transfer rate.
Xbox Series X|S HDR calibration
Xbox separates capability checks from its HDR-for-games wizard. Check the signal first, then calibrate.

Check supported capabilities
- Open Settings > General > TV & Display Options > 4K TV details.
- Look for green checks beside the capabilities you expect, such as 4K, HDR10, 120 Hz and gaming features. A missing check identifies a connection, port, format or display limitation to resolve before calibration.
Run Calibrate HDR for Games
- Go to Settings > General > TV & Display Options > Setup > Calibrate HDR for Games.
- Follow each on-screen pattern and adjust only until the reference detail is barely visible as instructed.
- Complete the wizard while the display remains in Game mode with the chosen HGiG or tone-mapping setting.
Xbox also includes Calibrate TV for broader picture controls. That tool is useful for general setup, but Calibrate HDR for Games is the relevant console HDR step.
Check Xbox HDR formats
Xbox Series X|S supports HDR10 displays and Dolby Vision in supported configurations. Confirm the television’s format support and the selected video modes before calibrating. A display that supports HDR10 but not Dolby Vision will not produce Dolby Vision output simply because the console offers the option.
HGiG versus dynamic tone mapping
HGiG (HDR Gaming Interest Group) is intended to align the display’s handling of game highlights with the tone mapping specified by game developers. In practice, the names and behavior vary by manufacturer and model.

What HGiG changes
On compatible displays, HGiG generally asks the television not to apply an additional dynamic roll-off to the game’s HDR signal. The console and game’s calibration data then determine where highlights should clip. This can preserve the intended relationship between mid-tones and specular highlights, but it can look less bright than a television’s own dynamic tone mapping.
LG television paths and the darker appearance
On LG televisions running webOS 6.0 or later, the current path is All Settings > General > Game Optimizer > Screen > Tone Mapping Compensation. Earlier webOS versions use a different menu path. LG states that HGiG availability depends on the TV model, connected console and game, and warns that selecting HGiG can make the screen look darker than selecting Tone Mapping On.

When dynamic tone mapping is the practical choice
Dynamic Tone Mapping (often labeled Tone Mapping On) analyzes each scene and remaps brightness to the television’s capabilities. It can make a lower-peak display look brighter and can prevent some scenes from appearing dim, but it may change the creator’s intended contrast and can compress or reshape highlights. There is no universal winner: the correct choice depends on the display, the game and whether you prioritize reference behavior or a brighter presentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Game-level HDR controls
Many games expose their own HDR brightness, paper-white or peak-luminance controls. Adjust these only after the system-level wizard.
- Start the game with the console wizard already completed and the display’s final tone-mapping mode selected.
- Use the game’s on-screen reference pattern, not a generic value copied from another television.
- Set black-level or shadow controls so near-black texture remains visible without lifting the entire image into gray.
- Set peak or highlight controls so bright details remain distinct rather than merging into a flat white area.
A game can override or interpret HDR metadata differently from another game. Therefore, a setting that looks correct in one title is not proof that every title is calibrated identically.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsVerification: prove that HDR is working
- Check the PS5 output information or Xbox 4K TV details screen and confirm HDR is reported as active when an HDR game is running.
- Launch a known HDR game and inspect both shadow detail and bright highlights. Black areas should retain texture where the game’s reference image shows texture; bright clouds, lamps or reflections should not become a single featureless patch.
- On PS5, switch to an SDR game or app. With On When Supported, it should remain SDR rather than being unnecessarily converted.
- Test VRR and 120 Hz separately if you use them. A display may support HDR at 4K/60 Hz but have different limits at 4K/120 Hz.
- Repeat the check after changing the television picture mode, HGiG or tone mapping, HDR format, HDMI port, cable, receiver, soundbar or firmware.
Symptoms, causes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely causes | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| HDR looks washed out or gray | Wrong picture mode, incorrect black-level range, an SDR conversion, or a tone-mapping mismatch | Return the input to Game mode, verify HDR is active, use PS5 On When Supported when appropriate, check the display’s black-level setting, then rerun the console wizard. |
| HDR looks too dark | HGiG on a display that appears darker in that mode, an overly conservative game setting, or a low-peak panel | Compare HGiG with the display’s documented Tone Mapping On behavior, inspect shadow detail, and recalibrate after selecting the final mode. Do not compensate by blindly raising every brightness control. |
| Highlights are clipped or flat | Dynamic tone mapping, an excessive game peak setting, or calibration performed in a different display mode | Recheck the game’s reference pattern, try HGiG if supported, and run the console wizard again with the final mode fixed. |
| HDR option is missing | Unsupported HDMI input, disabled enhanced-bandwidth mode, an intermediate receiver or soundbar, incorrect cable, or outdated firmware | Connect the console directly to the display, use the correct HDMI 2.1-capable port for 4K/120 Hz, verify the cable rating and firmware, then inspect the console capability screen. |
| Blank screen, corrupted colors or no 4K/HDR on Xbox | Auto-detect or video-mode mismatch, unsupported HDR format, HDCP 2.2 path problem, cable or firmware fault | Check TV & Display Options, the HDMI port and direct connection. Microsoft lists temporarily disabling HDR10 or Auto HDR as a troubleshooting step for strange colors; re-enable the feature after identifying the incompatible part of the chain. |
| 4K/120 Hz flicker on PS5 | Bandwidth instability, cable or port limits, or an intermediate device | Use the supplied or certified Ultra High Speed cable and the correct HDMI 2.1 port, bypass intermediate equipment, update firmware, and try Video Transfer Rate -1 or -2. |
Do you need an HDMI 2.1 cable?
You need a cable rated for the bandwidth of your target signal, not a cable that magically improves HDR quality. For 4K at 120 Hz with HDR, use the console-supplied cable or a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz. Microsoft recommends the supplied Ultra High Speed cable for Xbox Series X HDMI 2.1 benefits; Sony recommends the included PS5 cable or an Ultra High Speed Cable rated for 4K/120 Hz.
A higher-rated cable cannot add HDR, 120 Hz or Dolby Vision to a display that lacks those capabilities. Its value is reliable transport of the signal the console and display already support. If a setup works at 4K/60 Hz but fails at 4K/120 Hz, bandwidth, port capability, cable quality or an intermediate device is more likely than the HDR calibration values themselves.
A repeatable calibration routine
- Choose the display’s Game mode and enable HDR or enhanced HDMI input support.
- Connect the console directly with the supplied or certified Ultra High Speed cable.
- Select HGiG or the display’s preferred tone-mapping mode and record that choice.
- Run the PS5 Adjust HDR wizard or Xbox Calibrate HDR for Games wizard.
- Confirm the console reports the expected HDR, resolution, refresh rate and VRR capabilities.
- Adjust each game’s own HDR controls using its reference pattern.
- Check a known HDR game for shadow detail and highlight separation, then test an SDR title where applicable.
- Repeat the routine after any change to the display mode, tone mapping, HDR format, HDMI path, cable, receiver, soundbar or firmware.
Bottom line
Calibrate HDR only after the display mode, tone mapping and HDMI path are fixed. Use PS5’s On When Supported to avoid unnecessary SDR conversion, run Adjust HDR, and verify the output information. On Xbox, check 4K TV details first, then run Calibrate HDR for Games. HGiG can better preserve developer-intended mapping but may look darker than dynamic tone mapping; choose based on your display’s documented behavior and verify with real shadow and highlight detail. For 4K/120 Hz, use the correct HDMI 2.1-capable port and a supplied or certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
