Read the ratio exactly as the issuer states it, then multiply your old holding by the correct multiplier. If the ratio means A total shares for every B old shares, calculate old shares × (A ÷ B). If it means A new bonus shares for every B old shares, calculate additional shares with old shares × (A ÷ B) and add them to the old holding.
Start with the issuer’s exact wording
Most calculation errors come from treating every ratio as if it describes the same thing. A stock-split notice usually states the number of total shares you will have for each old share. A bonus-issue notice often states the number of new shares issued for each old share. Those descriptions produce different multipliers.
Before doing any arithmetic, copy the ratio from the official corporate-action announcement, exchange notice or broker entry. Do not infer its meaning from a headline such as “1:2” or “2-for-1”; confirm whether the first number represents total shares after the event or additional shares issued.

new total shares = old shares × (A ÷ B)
A “2-for-1 split” means two total shares replace each one old share. A holder of 1,200 shares therefore has 1,200 × 2 = 2,400 shares.
Additional-shares wording
If the notice says A new shares for every B old shares, first calculate the new allotment:
new additional shares = old shares × (A ÷ B)
Then add those shares to the original holding:
new total shares = old shares + new additional shares
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsEquivalently, the total multiplier is (B + A) ÷ B. A 1-for-2 bonus issue gives one new share for every two held, so 1,200 shares produce 600 additional shares and 1,800 total shares.
The core calculation, with a reliable worksheet
Use this five-line worksheet for any forward split or bonus issue:
- Write the old number of shares held on the applicable record date.
- Write the ratio exactly as published, including which number is old shares and which is new or total shares.
- Convert the ratio to a multiplier by dividing the first quantity by the second.
- Multiply the old holding by that multiplier, keeping additional shares and total shares separate when the notice describes a bonus allotment.
- Compare the result with the broker’s post-event position and investigate any rounding or cash-in-lieu entry.
For a ratio of A:B that describes total shares, the multiplier is A ÷ B. For a ratio of A:B that describes additional bonus shares, the additional-share multiplier is still A ÷ B, but the total-share multiplier is (A + B) ÷ B.
Forward stock-split examples
A forward split increases the number of shares represented by each existing position. The following examples assume the ratio describes total shares after the split.

| Published ratio | Calculation | Old holding | New total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2-for-1 | old × 2/1 |
100 | 200 |
| 3-for-2 | old × 3/2 |
100 | 150 |
| 5-for-4 | old × 5/4 |
800 | 1,000 |
| 3-for-2 | 1,200 × 3/2 |
1,200 | 1,800 |
Example: a 2-for-1 split
Suppose you own 100 shares and the issuer declares a 2-for-1 split. The new count is 100 × (2 ÷ 1) = 200. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s investor example pairs this with a price adjustment from $100 to about $50 per share. Immediately after the adjustment, the position is approximately $10,000 either way: 100 × $100 before, or 200 × $50 after, before later market movements.
Example: a 3-for-2 split
For 1,200 shares, 1,200 × (3 ÷ 2) = 1,800. This ratio adds 600 shares, but the notice still describes 1,800 as the post-split total. If your holding is not divisible by two, check the issuer’s fractional-share rule before assuming that a whole-number result will be credited.
Example: a 5-for-4 split
An 800-share holding becomes 800 × (5 ÷ 4) = 1,000. The increase is 200 shares. For 802 shares, the mathematical result is 1,002.5 shares, so the actual account entry depends on whether the plan retains fractions, aggregates them for sale, rounds, or pays cash instead.
How a bonus issue changes the count
A bonus issue distributes additional shares to existing holders without requiring payment for those shares. HM Revenue & Customs describes bonus shares as brand-new shares issued from a company’s authorised share capital and notes that reducing the quoted share price and improving liquidity are usual aims. The calculation still depends on whether the ratio is stated as new shares or total shares.
1-for-2 bonus issue
“1-for-2 bonus” normally means one new share for every two old shares:
- Old holding: 1,200 shares
- Additional shares:
1,200 × (1 ÷ 2) = 600 - New total:
1,200 + 600 = 1,800
Do not treat this as a 1.5-times total-share ratio unless you have first established that the notice uses additional-share wording. In this example, 1.5 is the resulting total multiplier, not the number of new shares per old share.
2-for-1 bonus issue
A “2-for-1 bonus” generally means two additional shares for every one old share. A holder of 1,000 shares receives 2,000 additional shares and ends with 3,000 total shares. Rule AS 20, issued by the Income Tax Department of the Government of India, gives the same distinction for a two-for-one bonus issue: multiply the pre-issue shares by three to obtain the new total, or by two to obtain the additional shares. The rule also states that, in a bonus issue or share split, equity shares are issued to existing shareholders for no additional consideration.

When the notice uses total-share language for a bonus
An issuer may instead say “three shares for every two held” while defining that as the total post-event entitlement. In that case, 1,200 shares become 1,200 × (3 ÷ 2) = 1,800, not 3,600. Read the explanatory sentence, entitlement table and corporate-action code together; the ratio alone is not enough when terminology differs between markets.

Reverse splits: divide the holding instead of increasing it
A reverse split consolidates several old shares into fewer new shares. Apply the same ratio method, but the multiplier is less than one. A 1-for-10 reverse split converts each ten old shares into one:
new shares = old shares × (1 ÷ 10)
Investor.gov’s example converts 10,000 shares into 1,000 before any fractional-share treatment. A holder of 10,005 shares has a mathematical entitlement of 1,000.5 shares. The issuer or broker must specify whether that half share remains in the account, is combined with other fractions and sold, is rounded, or is paid as cash in lieu.
Reverse splits are often used to increase the quoted price per share, for example when an exchange’s listing rules require a minimum price. They do not, by themselves, create investment value. The economic result depends on the adjusted price and subsequent trading.
What happens to price, value and ownership?
Inverse price adjustment
For a conventional forward split, the quoted price is adjusted in the opposite direction to the share-count multiplier. In a 2-for-1 split, doubling the share count is normally paired with halving the reference price. In a 1-for-10 reverse split, reducing the count to one-tenth is normally paired with multiplying the reference price by about ten.
Recommended Free Tools
The adjustment is mechanical. It does not guarantee that the market will continue trading at the exact theoretical price once trading resumes.
Immediate market value
At the instant of a standard split or bonus adjustment, your position’s market value is approximately unchanged because the number of shares and per-share price move in opposite directions. The SEC illustrates this with 100 shares at $100 becoming 200 shares at $50. Market movements, spreads, fees, taxes and any cash paid for fractions can make the account value differ from the simple before-and-after multiplication.

Ownership percentage
A standard forward split does not dilute existing owners. The SEC says a stock split, unlike an issuance of new shares, does not dilute existing ownership interests. Every outstanding share is adjusted under the same terms, so your percentage of the company remains essentially the same unless another transaction changes the share count.
Per-share cost records
Your broker may adjust the displayed average cost per share to reflect the new count. A 2-for-1 adjustment generally halves the per-share figure while leaving the aggregate basis broadly unchanged; a reverse split generally raises the per-share figure. The tax treatment of basis, holding period, fractional proceeds and bonus shares depends on the jurisdiction and account type, so retain the announcement, old statement, new statement and cash-in-lieu record for your tax adviser or local authority.
Fractional shares and cash in lieu
Do not assume that two brokers will process a fraction identically. The issuer’s plan, transfer-agent instructions and your broker’s corporate-action policy control the result. Common treatments include:
- Crediting the exact fractional position, where the market and account system support it.
- Aggregating customers’ fractions and selling the combined position, then crediting each holder’s cash share.
- Rounding the entitlement under the published terms.
- Paying cash in lieu of the fraction instead of delivering a partial share.
Investor.gov documents cash-out treatment for some reverse splits, particularly where a small shareholder would otherwise receive less than one new share. The cash amount may be based on a sale price and can differ from the theoretical price used in the ratio calculation. Look for a separate “cash in lieu,” “fractional proceeds” or similar line on the statement.
Dates that determine which holding is adjusted
The ratio alone does not tell you which shares qualify or when the new position will appear. Record these dates from the official notice:
- Announcement date: when the issuer first disclosed the action.
- Record date: the date used to identify eligible holders, subject to the market’s settlement rules.
- Ex-date: the date from which trading generally occurs without the entitlement, where applicable.
- Effective date: when the split or bonus becomes legally and operationally effective.
- Payment or allocation date: when the additional shares or cash are posted to accounts.
Market conventions differ by country and security type. If you bought or sold near the record or ex-date, ask the broker which settled position was used rather than relying on the trade date alone.

A verification procedure for your account
- Find the primary notice. Use the issuer’s corporate-action announcement or the exchange filing, then compare it with your broker’s event description.
- Copy the ratio and definition. Record whether it states total shares after the event or additional shares issued.
- Record the dates. Note the record, ex-, effective and allocation dates and the relevant market or security class.
- Calculate both figures. Write the additional-share result and the final total separately for a bonus issue.
- Check eligibility. Confirm that the number of shares used in the calculation is the settled holding on the applicable date.
- Review the statement. Look for the new share quantity, adjusted average cost and any cash-in-lieu line.
- Reconcile differences. Contact the broker’s corporate-actions desk if the ratio, fractional treatment or dates in the statement do not match the notice.
- Archive records. Keep the notice and statements for cost-basis and tax reporting. Tax rules are jurisdiction-specific.
Forward split, bonus issue and reverse split compared
| Event | What the ratio usually describes | Share-count effect | Typical price adjustment | Main issue to verify |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Forward stock split | Total new shares for each old share | Increases | Inverse reduction | Fractional handling and effective date |
| Bonus issue | Often additional new shares for each old share | Increases | Usually inverse reduction | Whether the ratio means additional or total shares |
| Reverse stock split | Total new shares for a number of old shares | Decreases | Inverse increase | Cash-out, rounding or retention of fractions |
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Confusing “1-for-2” with “2-for-1”
A 1-for-2 bonus normally adds one share for every two held, producing a 1.5-times total. A 2-for-1 split normally produces two total shares for every one held, doubling the count. Rewrite the notice in plain language before calculating.

Reporting additional shares as the final balance
If 600 bonus shares are issued on a 1,200-share holding, 600 is the allotment, not the final position. The final position is 1,800 unless the notice explicitly defines the ratio as total shares.
Ignoring fractions
Multiplication can produce a decimal even when the issuer delivers only whole shares. Do not round independently. Use the published fractional policy and reconcile any cash payment with the statement.
Using the announcement date as the eligibility date
Announcements can precede the record and effective dates by weeks. Calculate from the eligible settled holding, not automatically from the number of shares you own today.
Expecting an instant profit
The extra shares are paired with an adjusted price. A split changes denomination and tradability, not the company’s assets or your immediate percentage ownership. Later market movements can raise or lower the position.
Worked scenarios
1,200 shares in a 3-for-2 forward split
The notice defines three total shares for every two old shares. The multiplier is 3/2, so 1,200 × 3/2 = 1,800 total shares. The increase is 600 shares. If the pre-split price were $90, the theoretical adjusted reference price would be about $60, subject to actual trading.
1,200 shares in a 1-for-2 bonus issue
The notice defines one additional share for every two held. Additional shares are 1,200 × 1/2 = 600; total shares are 1,200 + 600 = 1,800. The same final count as the 3-for-2 split results from different wording, so the notice’s definition remains essential.
10,005 shares in a 1-for-10 reverse split
The mathematical entitlement is 10,005 × 1/10 = 1,000.5. The final account could show 1,000 shares plus cash for 0.5, 1,001 shares after a stated rounding rule, or a fractional position if permitted. Only the issuer and broker terms determine which outcome applies.
Jurisdiction and rule changes
Corporate-action mechanics, settlement dates, tax treatment and fractional-share rules vary by jurisdiction. Historical guidance from India’s securities regulator, SEBI, said that a company announcing a bonus issue after board approval had to implement it within six months and could not change that decision. That was historical guidance; confirm the current rule in the relevant jurisdiction rather than applying it universally.
For a cross-border holding, check the issuer’s home-market notice, the exchange where the security trades, the depositary or transfer agent and your broker’s local processing terms. Different accounts can receive the same event on different posting dates even when the entitlement is identical.
Quick Recap
Quick calculation checklist
- Identify whether the ratio describes total shares or additional shares.
- Use
old × (A ÷ B)for a total-share ratio. - For additional-share wording, calculate
old × (A ÷ B), then add the result to the old holding. - For a reverse split, apply the same formula with a multiplier below one.
- Confirm record, ex-, effective and allocation dates.
- Read the fractional-share and cash-in-lieu terms.
- Reconcile the broker statement and retain records for tax reporting.
