To estimate how long a large library of local videos will take to upload to YouTube, add the files’ sizes and divide by your sustained upload speed. With decimal gigabytes and megabits per second, use hours ≈ total GB × 8,000 ÷ upload Mbps ÷ 3,600. This estimates file transfer only; YouTube processing takes additional time.
If you mean the total watch time of videos already in a YouTube playlist, that is a different calculation: add the durations of every video in the playlist.
Estimate how long it will take to upload all your videos
1. Add the file sizes
Find the size of each local video file and add them together. Keep the total in decimal gigabytes (GB) for the formula below. If your files are listed in megabytes, convert consistently: 1,000 MB = 1 GB. If using binary units such as GiB, convert the file sizes and rate to compatible units before calculating.
2. Use a representative upload speed
Use the sustained upload rate you observe during a representative upload, rather than the maximum speed advertised for your internet plan. The observed rate is more useful because actual upload conditions vary. YouTube says uploading time varies with file size and identifies internet bandwidth and upload traffic as factors; higher-quality videos take longer to upload. #1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
3. Calculate the baseline transfer time
For decimal GB and megabits per second (Mbps):
Seconds ≈ total GB × 8,000 ÷ sustained upload Mbps
Then divide seconds by 3,600 to get hours. For example, a hypothetical 100 GB library uploaded at a sustained 20 Mbps gives 40,000 seconds, or about 11.1 hours of baseline transfer time. This is an arithmetic example, not a prediction for a particular connection or library.

How accurate is an upload-time estimate?
The calculation is a baseline, not a guaranteed finish time. It assumes the observed upload rate is maintained for the whole transfer. Network variation, interruptions, retries, and upload traffic can change the actual duration. There is no universal overhead percentage that can be applied reliably to every library and connection.
For a better planning estimate, measure speed during a representative upload and calculate from that sustained rate. If conditions change significantly or uploads repeatedly pause, treat the estimate as a fresh baseline rather than a deadline.

Include YouTube processing separately
Transfer ends when YouTube has received the file; processing happens afterward and can take additional time. YouTube says processing can depend on video quality, length, format, and traffic. A file may finish uploading before higher-resolution playback is ready. See YouTube Help: Upload videos.
Keep transfer and processing as separate parts of your schedule. The formula estimates only the time to send the files; it does not predict when every resolution or playback option will finish processing.

Does uploading in batches change the total time?
YouTube Studio lets you select up to 15 videos at a time. That is a batch-selection limit, not evidence that 15 files transfer simultaneously. It does not justify dividing an estimate by 15 or multiplying it by a fixed factor. The total file size and the connection’s sustained upload rate remain the basis for the transfer estimate. YouTube Help: Upload videos.
Recovering from an interrupted upload
For large files or unreliable connections, Google’s YouTube Data API guide documents resumable uploads. Resumable upload allows an interrupted transfer to continue from the successfully transferred point, which can reduce the need to start over. It does not make the underlying connection faster. See Google for Developers: Resumable uploads.

If you mean a playlist’s total watch duration
To calculate the runtime of videos already in a playlist, retrieve all playlist entries, follow pagination until there is no next-page token, obtain each video’s duration, convert the durations to seconds, and add them. This measures viewing time, not the time required to upload local files.
- Use the YouTube Data API playlist items list method to retrieve the playlist’s items. A response can contain up to 50 items, so request subsequent pages until no next-page token is returned. Google for Developers: playlistItems.list.
- For each playlist item, retrieve the video’s metadata and duration. The API represents video duration as an ISO 8601 value, such as
PT#M#S. Google for Developers: videos resource. - Convert each duration to seconds and sum the values. Divide the result by 3,600 for total hours, or convert it to hours and minutes for a more readable runtime.
