The dependable way to measure a Uniswap v3 liquidity position is to separate principal, fees, gas and impermanent loss, then combine them in one reporting currency at one exit timestamp. Use Net return = (exit value of LP principal + fees collected or accrued − initial contributed value − total gas costs) / initial contributed value. Report impermanent loss (IL) separately by comparing the marked value of the position before fees and gas with the value of holding the exact tokens deposited.
This method works for a position that is still open or one that has been closed. It also makes clear why a position can show attractive fee income yet underperform simply holding the tokens: price movement changes the position’s token mix, a narrow range can become inactive, and every approval, liquidity change, collection and rebalance adds another gas debit.
Define the return before opening a spreadsheet
Choose one reporting currency (such as USD or EUR), one valuation timestamp, and one benchmark. Value every token balance, fee amount and gas payment at that same timestamp unless you explicitly state a different convention. The core cash-flow result is:

“Exit value of LP principal” means the token amounts represented by the position at the exit price, excluding fees. If fees remain inside the position’s uncollected accounting, include them in a separate fee line and state that they are accrued rather than withdrawn. Gas is a real cost even when it is paid in the chain’s native token and not deducted from the pool balance.
Keep the IL calculation independent:
IL value = exit value of LP principal (excluding fees) − exit value of original tokens held
IL percentage = IL value / exit value of original tokens held
A negative IL value means the liquidity position’s principal is worth less than the hold benchmark at the chosen exit mark. Do not multiply fee yield by (1 − IL). Fees, price divergence and gas are different components of the cash-flow statement and must not be blended into one made-up adjustment.
Record the position at entry
Save the on-chain facts before calculating anything. A v3 pool is identified by its token pair and fee tier, so the same pair can have several distinct pools. Record the following in a position ledger:
- Chain and pool contract address.
- Token0 and token1 contract addresses, symbols and decimals.
- Fee tier. Current Uniswap support documentation lists 0.0075%, 0.0375%, 0.25% and 0.8334% for the 0.01%, 0.05%, 0.30% and 1.00% tiers, respectively, before any applicable protocol fee.
- Lower and upper ticks, and the corresponding lower and upper prices.
- Liquidity value, entry block, entry timestamp and the entry sqrt price or tick.
- The exact token0 and token1 quantities transferred into the position.
- The market prices used to convert those quantities into the reporting currency.
- Wallet address and position identifier, so increases, decreases, collections and transfers are not mixed with another position.
Use the amounts actually minted or added, not a rounded front-end display. Keep the token decimals and the price quotation direction (token1 per token0, or its inverse) consistent throughout the calculation.
Why the range matters
A v3 position earns swap fees only while the current price is inside its selected range and the position is active. If price moves outside the range, the position remains exposed to one token but receives no new swap fees until price returns. Narrow ranges can concentrate liquidity and fee capture while increasing the probability of becoming inactive and changing the token mix; wider ranges stay active over more prices but spread liquidity more thinly.

At the exit block, read the pool’s sqrt price or current tick and apply the concentrated-liquidity amount equations for the position’s lower and upper prices. The position’s token amounts are determined by liquidity and the relative square-root prices, not by a permanent 50/50 split.
Price below the lower tick
When the current price is below the range, the position is entirely in token0. Token1 is zero, subject to rounding at the tick boundary. Use the liquidity and both range boundaries to calculate token0, then multiply that token0 amount by its exit price in the reporting currency.

Price inside the range
When the current price lies between the lower and upper ticks, the position holds both tokens. In the usual Uniswap v3 notation, with L as liquidity, sqrtP as the current square-root price, sqrtPa as the lower boundary and sqrtPb as the upper boundary:
amount0 = L × (sqrtPb − sqrtP) / (sqrtP × sqrtPb)
amount1 = L × (sqrtP − sqrtPa)
Use the protocol’s integer math and token decimals when implementing these equations; floating-point approximations can produce visible errors for large positions or tokens with unusual decimals. Convert both resulting balances at the same exit timestamp and add them to obtain the marked LP principal.
Price above the upper tick
When the current price is above the range, the position is entirely in token1 and token0 is zero. Calculate the token1 amount from liquidity and the two boundaries, then value that amount at the exit price.
Boundary and rounding checks
Ticks are discrete prices. A price that appears to be exactly on a boundary in a user interface can be just inside or outside when read from the pool’s integer state. Use the pool’s recorded sqrt price at the exit block, preserve the token ordering, and document rounding. Compare the calculated amounts with the position manager’s amounts during a decrease-liquidity simulation or actual withdrawal as a sanity check.
Calculate fees from fee-growth state
Fees are tracked per token through fee-growth accumulators. Read the fee-growth state at entry and exit, and account for the fee growth inside the position’s lower and upper ticks. For token0, the standard v3 expression is:
fees_0 = liquidity × (feeGrowthInside0(t1) − feeGrowthInside0(t0)) / 2^128
Apply the equivalent formula for token1:
fees_1 = liquidity × (feeGrowthInside1(t1) − feeGrowthInside1(t0)) / 2^128
The fee-growth-inside value is derived from global fee growth minus the fee growth outside the lower and upper ticks. In implementation terms, you need the global accumulator, each boundary tick’s outside accumulator, the tick’s initialized state and the current tick to determine whether each outside value must be subtracted from the global side or from the other boundary. A position’s stored last fee-growth-inside values provide the entry checkpoint for an existing position.

Accrued versus collected fees
Separate “fees accrued” from “fees collected.” Accrued fees are the amount implied by fee-growth state at the valuation block. Collected fees are the tokens actually transferred to the wallet in a claim transaction. If you report accrued fees, they remain subject to execution, rounding and any later change before collection; if you report collected fees, use the transaction receipt and token transfer amount. Never count the same fees in both the position balance and the collection cash flow.
Active liquidity and fee sharing
Fees are distributed proportionally among active liquidity providers at the moment swaps occur. A large nominal position can earn little if it is out of range, while a smaller position in an active range can receive a larger share of contemporaneous fee growth. Therefore, annualizing fees from a short interval without reporting time in range, pool volume and competing liquidity can be misleading.
Add every gas payment
Gas must be summed across the entire strategy, not only the final withdrawal. Include:
- Token approvals, including separate approvals for token0 and token1 when required.
- Mint or initial liquidity transactions.
- Increase-liquidity transactions.
- Decrease-liquidity transactions.
- Collect-fees transactions.
- Every rebalance, including the decrease, any new approval and the next mint or increase.
- Permit or multicall transactions when they consume gas.
For each transaction, calculate:
transaction gas cost = gasUsed × effectiveGasPrice
Convert the resulting native-token amount to the reporting currency at a stated timestamp. A defensible convention is the native token’s market price at transaction execution; another is a contemporaneous block-time price. Use one convention for all transactions and disclose it. Do not substitute a wallet interface’s maximum fee for the receipt’s effective gas price.
Uniswap’s LP API can simulate create, increase-liquidity, decrease-liquidity and claim-fees operations and returns a gasFee estimate for those operations. Treat an estimate as a planning input, then replace it with receipt-level gasUsed and effective gas price after execution. Estimates do not capture a later rebalance or an approval that was already needed for a different token.
Measure impermanent loss against a defined hold portfolio
The cleanest benchmark uses the exact token0 and token1 quantities deposited at entry. At the exit timestamp, value those original quantities at the exit prices:
hold value = (initial token0 quantity × exit token0 price) + (initial token1 quantity × exit token1 price)
Then compare that hold value with the LP principal value calculated from the position’s exit token amounts. This isolates the effect of changing token composition and price divergence before fees and gas.

Some analyses instead use a 50/50 dollar allocation or another portfolio rule. That can be useful for strategy research, but it is not the same as holding the deposited quantities. Name the benchmark in the report and do not switch benchmarks between positions.
Uniswap describes IL as the loss of value that can occur when token prices change after liquidity is added. In v3, concentrated ranges increase sensitivity to price movement because the position can move entirely into one token once price leaves the range. IL is not a fee or a transaction cost, and it does not disappear simply because fees were collected.
Assemble the return statement
Present the result as a small cash-flow table so a reader can audit each component:
| Line item | Definition | Reporting rule |
|---|---|---|
| Initial contributed value | Entry token0 and token1 quantities marked at entry prices | Use one entry timestamp and currency |
| LP principal at exit | Exit token amounts from liquidity and ticks, excluding fees | Mark both tokens at the exit timestamp |
| Fees | Token0 and token1 fee growth, accrued or collected | State which status is reported and avoid double counting |
| Gas | Sum of receipt-level native-token costs | Convert each payment using the stated gas-token price convention |
| Net profit or loss | LP principal + fees − initial value − gas | Keep signs explicit |
| Net return | Net profit or loss divided by initial value | Report as a percentage and the measurement interval |
| IL value and percentage | LP principal versus exact-token hold benchmark | Exclude fees and gas from this line |
If fees are still accrued, label the result “mark-to-market net return.” If all fees have been collected and the position closed, label it a realized result only when the token transfers and gas receipts support that claim.

Illustrative calculation with hypothetical figures
The following numbers are an illustration of the method, not a performance result for any pool. Suppose a position’s deposited tokens were worth $10,000 at entry. At exit, the tick and liquidity math produce an LP principal value of $9,300. Fee-growth accounting shows $520 of fees, and receipts show $180 of total gas. The exact-token hold benchmark is worth $9,700 at the same exit prices.
The net result is:
($9,300 + $520 − $10,000 − $180) / $10,000 = −3.6%
IL is reported separately:
($9,300 − $9,700) / $9,700 = −4.12%
Those two percentages answer different questions. The first includes fees and gas and tells you the investor’s net result. The second shows how the LP principal differed from holding the original tokens before fees and gas.

| Axis | Why it changes the result | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Fee tier | Higher rates can raise fee income per swap but may attract different liquidity and flow | Tier and any applicable protocol fee |
| Range width | Narrow ranges concentrate liquidity but become inactive sooner; wide ranges dilute concentration | Lower and upper ticks, plus width in price terms |
| Time in range | Only active liquidity earns swap fees | Intervals inside, below and above the range |
| Pool volume | More swap volume can produce more fee growth, but volume is shared among active liquidity | Volume and fee growth for the exact interval |
| Competing liquidity | Additional active liquidity reduces each position’s share of fees | Active liquidity at swap times or a documented proxy |
| Rebalance frequency | Repositioning can restore activity but adds gas and changes the benchmark path | Every rebalance transaction and its cost |
| Token volatility | Larger price moves can increase the chance of leaving range and increase IL | Entry and exit prices, plus the path if analyzing risk |
| Gas conditions | High gas can erase fee income, especially for small positions | Gas used, effective price and valuation convention |
| Hold benchmark | Different benchmarks answer different economic questions | Exact deposited quantities, 50/50 allocation or another rule |
Do not use a fee APR from one range as if it were a guaranteed return for another. A narrow range may show a higher fee rate while it is active, yet spend much of the period earning nothing after price exits. A strategy that rebalances can restore fee earning but must overcome additional gas and any price movement during the transition.

Put historical performance claims in context
Uniswap Labs reported historical comparisons in 2022 using observations from September 16, 2021 through March 28, 2022. In that sample, non-rebalancing v3 positions had around 54% higher average fee returns than comparable v2 positions; 100-bps full-range positions had around 80% higher average returns; and selected range-bound stablecoin positions reached 2.6 times the v2 return. These are descriptions of that dated sample, not forecasts or guarantees for a current pool.
The figures also describe fee-return outperformance, not net returns after gas and not IL-adjusted profit. A current evaluation must recalculate fee growth, price movement, active time and transaction costs for its own chain, pool and dates.
Document assumptions and audit the result
Include an assumptions block with every published calculation:

- Recalculate fee growth using both token0 and token1 accumulators and confirm that values are non-negative unless a documented accumulator wrap or checkpoint issue applies.
- Match every gas debit to a transaction receipt and exclude failed transactions unless they consumed gas as part of the strategy.
- Confirm that collected fees are not still included in the accrued balance.
- Revalue both the LP principal and the hold benchmark with exactly the same exit prices.
- Reconcile the final token transfers to wallet balances after accounting for unrelated wallet activity.
Common errors and how to correct them
Using the wrong pool
Choosing a different fee tier for the same pair changes liquidity, fee growth and price history. Match the pool address and tier from the position record.
Assuming every position is 50/50
Only the entry composition may be approximately balanced. Inside a range, token amounts change with price; outside it, the position is entirely one token. Derive balances from liquidity and ticks.
Counting fees while out of range
An inactive position does not earn swap fees. Split the interval at each range crossing if you are analyzing when fee growth occurred.
Subtracting only the final withdrawal gas
Approvals, minting, increases, collections and rebalances all belong in the strategy’s cost basis. Use the complete transaction list.
Mixing valuation times
Pricing LP tokens at one time and gas at an unrelated market peak can produce a distorted result. State the timestamp convention and apply it consistently.
Calling accrued fees realized profit
Uncollected fees are a mark, not a wallet cash flow. Label them accrued and update the result when they are collected.
Applying an IL haircut to fees
Fees are not automatically reduced by an IL percentage. Calculate fee tokens from fee growth, calculate IL from the principal-versus-hold comparison, and show gas separately.
A concise reporting template
A reader should be able to reproduce the result from a single page containing:
- Position identity and range.
- Entry and exit marks.
- Entry quantities and value.
- Exit principal quantities and value.
- Token0 and token1 fees, with accrued or collected status.
- Every gas transaction and its reporting-currency value.
- Net profit or loss and net return.
- Hold value, IL value and IL percentage.
- Assumptions, data sources and uncertainty notes.
This format answers both practical questions: “What did I actually earn after expenses?” and “Would holding the deposited tokens have done better?” It also prevents a high fee figure, a favorable token price or a historical APR statistic from hiding an inactive range, unpriced gas or a materially different benchmark.
