There is no single monthly price for an AI workload on Azure. A defensible estimate adds every billable meter—model tokens or provisioned capacity, compute, storage, databases and search, networking, monitoring, security, support, and any Marketplace software—using the workload’s actual quantities and the rates for its region, model, SKU, deployment mode, currency, and billing agreement.

Start with a meter-by-meter spreadsheet, price it with the Azure Pricing Calculator (or the Retail Prices API for automation), then reconcile the estimate with Azure Cost Management after deployment. Token charges alone are not a total-cost estimate.

1. Define the workload before looking up prices

Azure prices are applied to consumption quantities, so first describe what the system will do over a billing month. Record assumptions in a versioned worksheet and attach a date, region, and source to every rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inference and request volume

  • Requests, conversations, batches, or jobs per month.
  • Average and peak input tokens, output tokens, and context length.
  • Model mix: for example, a smaller model for classification and a larger model for complex answers.
  • Whether prompts contain reusable content that qualifies for a cached-input rate.
  • Required latency, throughput, availability, and maximum queue time.

Training and custom serving

  • Training or fine-tuning runs per month, including hours per run and GPU type.
  • Always-on or scheduled inference endpoints, VM or AKS node count, operating system, disks, images, and autoscaling limits.
  • CPU, GPU, memory, and temporary storage requirements.

Data, retrieval, and operations

  • New data ingested, total data retained, replicas, backups, and transaction volume.
  • Vector or keyword-search queries, index size, and ingestion frequency.
  • Log, metric, and trace volume; retention period; dashboards and alert rules.
  • Inbound and outbound bandwidth, including cross-region or cross-cloud transfers.
  • Private endpoints, firewalls, encryption, identity, security monitoring, and support-plan needs.

Separate steady-state demand from spikes. A monthly average can hide a GPU or provisioned-throughput commitment that must run continuously.

2. Map each assumption to an Azure billing meter

Build one row for each service and meter rather than putting a single “AI” line in the budget. The following map covers the charges most often omitted.

Workload element Typical Azure meter Quantity to forecast Important dimensions
Managed model inference Azure OpenAI or Microsoft Foundry token meter Input, output, and cached tokens Model, region, deployment type, token class, currency, agreement
Reserved model capacity Provisioned throughput units (PTUs) PTUs deployed × billed hours Model, region, capacity tier, reservation term
Training or self-hosted serving GPU/CPU VM or AKS node hours Instance count × runtime hours VM size, GPU, OS, region, disks, autoscaling
Files and objects Blob or Files storage GB-month, operations, replication, data retrieval Redundancy, access tier, region, transactions
Retrieval and databases Azure AI Search, Cosmos DB, or other database capacity Search units, replicas, request units, storage, ingestion Capacity tier, replicas, consistency, region
Networking Bandwidth and egress meters GB transferred by direction and destination Cross-region, cross-cloud, internet, peering, private-link path
Observability Azure Monitor ingestion, retention, queries, alerts GB ingested, GB retained, query and alert activity Workspace tier, retention, region, sampling
Security and connectivity Private endpoints, firewall, security services Endpoint-hours, processed data, protected resources Service SKU, region, traffic volume
Commercial overhead Support, Marketplace software, taxes where applicable Plan fee, license quantity, usage, tax Contract, currency, billing account, negotiated discount

Microsoft billing guidance describes token usage, compute allocation, storage amount and hardware, bandwidth, per-use meters, and region as pricing dimensions. Treat each as a separate driver in your model.

3. Choose the commercial dimensions that control the rate

Before copying a unit price, fix the dimensions that make that price valid:

  • Region: Keep model, data, compute, and search placement explicit. A multi-region design can add transfer charges even when each individual service is inexpensive.
  • Model and deployment type: Different models and deployment modes have different token or capacity meters.
  • Tier and operating system: VM, storage, database, and monitoring tiers change both unit price and included features.
  • Currency and billing agreement: Pay-as-you-go rates may differ from Microsoft Customer Agreement (MCA), Enterprise Agreement (EA), Cloud Solution Provider (CSP), or Microsoft Online Subscription Agreement (MOSA) pricing. Signed-in calculator views can show negotiated prices for eligible agreements.
  • Commitment choice: Compare pay-as-you-go with reservations, savings plans, or PTUs. Record the term, cancellation rules, and whether the commitment applies to the exact resource and region.
  • Billing period: Distinguish a recurring hourly charge from a one-time purchase, promotional allowance, or tax.

Label every quoted rate with its retrieval date and geography. Azure prices can change, and a price copied without its model, region, or tier is not reproducible.

4. Calculate token-based inference

For measured token usage, calculate input and output separately:

Monthly inference cost = ((input tokens × input price) + (output tokens × output price)) ÷ 1,000,000

Use the unit prices for the selected model and region. If one request can use different models, calculate a row for each model and add the rows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Include cached and non-cached input correctly

When a model has a separate cached-input rate, split input tokens into cached and non-cached quantities before applying prices:

Inference cost = ((non-cached input × non-cached rate) + (cached input × cached rate) + (output × output rate)) ÷ 1,000,000

Do not apply a cached rate to the entire prompt unless the service’s usage record confirms that all of those tokens were cached.

Convert business activity into tokens

If you know monthly requests rather than tokens, estimate each component explicitly:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Multiply monthly requests by average input tokens.
  2. Multiply monthly requests by average output tokens.
  3. Add batch, retry, moderation, summarization, and evaluation calls; they are separate token-consuming requests.
  4. Apply a peak-demand scenario if autoscaling or throttling can increase retries.

For example, a support workflow may call a classifier, a retrieval planner, and a response model for one user message. Price all three calls, not just the final response.

5. Price provisioned throughput and reservations

Provisioned throughput units (PTUs) are capacity charges, not a meter of tokens actually consumed. The basic calculation is:

Monthly PTU cost = deployed PTUs × hourly PTU price × reserved hours in the billing period

A deployment that remains active for 24 hours a day is charged for that deployed capacity even when utilization is low. Use PTUs when predictable throughput, latency, or isolation justifies paying for reserved capacity; compare the commitment with the token cost of the same traffic under pay-as-you-go.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use utilization, not averages alone

  • Measure tokens per second and concurrent requests during the busiest interval.
  • Account for headroom required for failover, maintenance, and sudden bursts.
  • Calculate the break-even utilization at which PTUs cost less than on-demand tokens.
  • Model scale-up and scale-down schedules if capacity can be deployed only during business hours.

A Microsoft Foundry sizing example shows 25.92 million normalized tokens over 30 days from 600 units × 60 minutes × 24 hours × 30 days. That figure is an illustrative capacity assumption, not a universal benchmark or a promise of model throughput. Use your model’s documented normalization and measured utilization when sizing PTUs.

6. Add training and serving compute

For VM- or AKS-based training and serving, calculate each resource independently:

Compute cost = instance count × hourly rate × runtime hours

Then add attached disks, images, public IPs, load balancers, and any control-plane or node charges that apply to the selected architecture. For a training job, multiply the GPU count by the hours the job actually runs, then include data staging, checkpoints, failed retries, and idle time between jobs. For an endpoint, model minimum replicas, autoscaling limits, and whether nodes remain allocated while idle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GPU and CPU prices vary by VM family, region, operating system, and purchasing option. A reservation or savings plan can reduce a steady workload’s rate but creates a commitment; compare it with the cost of occasional bursts on pay-as-you-go capacity.

7. Include retrieval, databases, and storage

Storage

Estimate stored gigabytes by tier and redundancy, then add transactions and data retrieval where the service meters them:

Storage cost = average GB-month × storage rate + operations × operation rate + retrieval GB × retrieval rate

Separate raw documents, parsed text, embeddings, indexes, replicas, and backups. Retention policies can make logs and vector indexes grow faster than the source documents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Search and vector retrieval

Price search or vector capacity by the units, replicas, and hours required. Add index creation and refresh activity, query volume, and any data-processing service used to chunk, embed, or enrich documents. A small token bill can still sit on top of a large always-on search footprint.

Operational databases

For a database such as Cosmos DB, forecast request units or provisioned capacity, storage, backups, and multi-region replicas. Use separate scenarios for provisioned and serverless modes when both are available; they have different behavior during idle periods and bursts.

8. Model networking and egress

List every data path: client to API, API to model, model to search, cross-region replication, and outbound responses. Inbound and outbound traffic can use different meters, and cross-region or cross-cloud egress is often the material charge.

  1. Estimate gigabytes per request from prompt attachments, retrieved passages, generated files, and protocol overhead.
  2. Multiply by monthly request or job count.
  3. Split traffic by destination: same region, another Azure region, another cloud, and the public internet.
  4. Apply the rate for each path and include replication traffic separately.

Keep services in one region when latency, residency, and availability requirements allow it, but do not move data solely to reduce egress if that violates regulatory or resilience requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Add monitoring, security, support, and Marketplace charges

Observability

Azure Monitor costs can depend on log ingestion, retention, queries, dashboards, and alerts. Estimate daily log volume from request and token telemetry, multiply by retention days, and model production sampling separately from verbose development logging. Include diagnostic settings on every resource that emits logs.

Security and private connectivity

Count private endpoints, firewall or gateway processing, security-management licenses, protected resources, and data processed by inspection services. A private network may reduce exposure while adding hourly endpoint and processing meters.

Support and software

Add the selected Azure support plan, Marketplace licenses, third-party images, and software usage. Record whether a charge is recurring, consumption-based, or a one-time license. Include taxes where applicable in the financial model, but keep them separate from infrastructure consumption so engineering assumptions remain auditable.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

10. Build a dated, region-specific estimate

The Azure Pricing Calculator is the starting point for turning anticipated usage into an estimated cost. Configure each product, enter its consumption quantity, choose the region and tier, and save the configuration date. The calculator’s unit pricing originates from the Azure Retail Prices API; the API is useful when you need to generate estimates for many regions, SKUs, or scenarios programmatically.

A worked calculation without assuming a universal Azure rate

Use a worksheet like this and replace each rate with the dated quote for your subscription. The quantities below illustrate the arithmetic; they are not a claim about current Azure prices.

Line Illustrative quantity Rate source to enter Formula
Input tokens 120,000,000 tokens/month Selected model’s regional input-token rate 120,000,000 ÷ 1,000,000 × input rate
Output tokens 30,000,000 tokens/month Selected model’s regional output-token rate 30,000,000 ÷ 1,000,000 × output rate
Search 2 replicas, 720 hours/month Selected search tier and region 2 × 720 × hourly search rate
Object storage 500 GB-month plus 20 million operations Redundancy, tier, and operation rates 500 × GB-month rate + operations × operation rate
GPU serving 2 instances, 360 hours/month GPU VM SKU, OS, and region 2 × 360 × instance-hour rate
Egress 1,000 GB/month, split by destination Each applicable bandwidth rate Sum of GB by path × path rate
Monitoring 80 GB ingested/month, 30-day retention Workspace tier and region Ingestion + retention + query/alert charges

The monthly total is the sum of every calculated line, plus support and Marketplace items. Keep a second column for low, base, and high quantities so a single optimistic average does not become the budget.

11. Compare scenarios before choosing an architecture

At minimum, create these scenarios:

  • Low, base, and high demand: Vary requests, tokens, jobs, and bandwidth together; a busy month often increases several meters at once.
  • Pay-as-you-go versus PTUs or reservations: Compare actual token or instance usage with the full committed-capacity charge, including idle hours.
  • One region versus multi-region: Include replication and cross-region egress, not just duplicated compute.
  • Small-model routing versus one large model: Price the additional routing and retry calls alongside the reduction in large-model tokens.
  • Verbose versus sampled telemetry: Keep the same incident-detection requirement while testing lower log volume and shorter retention.

Compare more than dollars. Record token or request volume, latency and throughput, model quality, GPU or CPU utilization, retrieval footprint, regional placement, availability, and the discount or commitment assumptions behind each scenario.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

12. Validate actual spend after launch

Estimates become useful only when reconciled with invoices and usage records.

  1. Apply consistent tags for application, environment, owner, model, and cost center. Use resource groups to separate production, staging, and experiments.
  2. In Cost Management, group costs by service, resource group, and tags. Compare token, compute, storage, search, network, and monitoring lines with the worksheet.
  3. Set a budget for the workload and alerts at thresholds such as forecasted overrun and actual spend. Alerts are controls, not a guarantee that consumption stops.
  4. Export usage and cost data on a schedule so finance and engineering can reconcile the same period and currency.
  5. Investigate variance by quantity first: requests, tokens, hours, GB, replicas, and egress. Then check rate changes, region changes, discounts, and taxes.
  6. Update the model with the observed unit quantities and retain the original estimate so forecast accuracy can be measured.

Common causes of divergence include retries that were not counted, autoscaling that stayed at its maximum, diagnostic logs enabled on every resource, replicas added for failover, and traffic crossing regions unexpectedly.

13. Cost-share guidance and optimization priorities

Microsoft’s AI cost-optimization guidance gives directional examples of typical cost shares: tokens 30–60%, GPUs 20–50%, vector or search 5–20%, storage 3–10%, and egress 2–15%. These are examples for orientation, not guarantees for a particular design; your measured workload may fall outside every range.

Use your meter report to decide what to optimize:

  • Reduce unnecessary input and output tokens through prompt trimming, response limits, summarization, and model routing.
  • Cache stable context when the selected model and service expose a cached-token rate.
  • Right-size GPU replicas and shut down development endpoints outside working hours.
  • Choose PTUs or reservations only after measuring sustained utilization and the value of predictable latency.
  • Compact or tier old documents, indexes, and logs; set retention and sampling deliberately.
  • Keep chatty services in the same region where practical and monitor egress by destination.
  • Use budgets, tags, and automated schedules so cost controls are part of deployment rather than a later audit.

14. A reusable calculation checklist

  • Workload quantities are documented for low, base, and high demand.
  • Input, output, cached, retry, batch, moderation, and evaluation tokens are separated.
  • Model, region, deployment type, tier, currency, and agreement are recorded beside each rate.
  • PTUs, VM or AKS hours, disks, images, and autoscaling headroom are included.
  • Search, vector, database, ingestion, storage, backup, and replication costs are included.
  • Inbound, outbound, cross-region, cross-cloud, and internet traffic are separated.
  • Monitoring ingestion, retention, queries, alerts, private endpoints, and security services are counted.
  • Support, Marketplace software, discounts, commitment terms, and applicable taxes are identified.
  • The estimate is dated and traceable to the Azure Pricing Calculator or Retail Prices API.
  • Cost Management tags, budgets, alerts, exports, and a variance-review owner are assigned before launch.

What the total means

Your total monthly cost is the sum of the selected model’s measured usage or provisioned capacity, all dependent Azure services, network paths, operations tooling, and commercial charges under one clearly stated region and billing agreement. Because Azure rates and workload volumes vary, a region-specific, dated worksheet is more trustworthy than a universal “cost per AI workload” number. Reconcile that worksheet with Cost Management as soon as the workload runs, then revise assumptions using observed meters.
