The price shown for a GPU is only one line on the bill. Calculate the real monthly cost by adding GPU time, the host virtual machine, storage, orchestration, inter-region transfer, internet egress, and any commitment payment, then subtracting discounts and credits. Finally, divide that total by the GPU-hours that actually produced useful work—not by the hours the instances merely existed.
All-in monthly cost = GPU charges + VM host charges + storage + platform/orchestration + inter-region transfer + internet egress + commitment fees + overage − applicable discounts and credits.
Start with the all-in cost, not the GPU sticker price
A cloud invoice can contain separate meters for an accelerator, its host machine, boot and attached disks, snapshots, managed Kubernetes or batch services, public IP addresses, cross-region traffic, internet delivery, and a reservation or committed-use contract. A quoted “GPU per hour” normally covers only the accelerator meter.
Use one monthly model for every provider and region. Record each component in the provider’s billing unit and retain the assumptions beside the result. This makes an apples-to-apples comparison possible when one service bundles a host and another bills it separately.

The two rates you need
The first result is all-in monthly cost. The decision metric is usually effective cost per useful GPU-hour:
Effective cost per useful GPU-hour = all-in monthly cost ÷ (provisioned GPUs × hours in the period × utilization × availability factor).
Utilization is the fraction of provisioned time spent doing useful work. The availability factor represents time lost to startup, queueing, maintenance, failed jobs, or spot interruptions. Keep idle and unavailable hours visible; dividing by 100% utilization makes an underused capacity commitment look artificially cheap.

Create one row for each region, GPU model, host shape, and purchasing method. At minimum, capture:
- Provider and region.
- GPU model, GPU count per host, memory per GPU, and the number of hosts.
- Host machine type and its hourly charge.
- Expected provisioned hours in the billing period.
- Billing model: on-demand, spot/preemptible, reservation, or committed use.
- Expected useful utilization and an availability factor.
- Persistent disk, object storage, snapshots, images, and backup capacity.
- Platform or orchestration services, such as managed Kubernetes, batch scheduling, logging, and monitoring.
- Inter-region traffic and internet output, separated by destination and direction.
- Commitment term, fixed monthly fee, covered resources, expected overage, discounts, credits, and taxes where applicable.
GPU price pages often exclude disks, images, networking, and VM instance pricing. Treat those as separate inputs rather than assuming they are included. A provider calculator can combine a GPU with a machine configuration, but it remains an estimate: Google Cloud cautions that calculator assumptions may not match the final monthly bill, and personalized estimates from other providers can likewise differ after discounts, commitments, taxes, and usage changes are applied.
Calculate the monthly bill step by step
1. Price the GPU meters
For on-demand capacity, multiply the number of GPUs by provisioned hours and the regional GPU-hour price:
GPU charge = GPU count × provisioned hours × GPU price per hour.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf a host carries four GPUs and you run eight GPUs for 720 hours, the GPU count is eight—not two hosts—because the accelerator meter is generally charged per GPU. Confirm whether the provider bills a fractional hour, a minute, or another minimum increment and round usage the same way the invoice does.
2. Add the VM host
Some configurations expose a distinct CPU/RAM host charge even when a GPU is attached. Add:

Host charge = host count × host hours × host price per hour.
Do not multiply a per-host rate by the GPU count. Conversely, do not omit a host charge simply because the GPU catalog lists an hourly accelerator price. If the selected machine includes host resources in one bundled rate, document that fact and use the bundle once.

3. Add storage and platform services
Include boot disks, local SSD or scratch space, persistent disks, object storage for datasets and checkpoints, snapshots, image storage, and backup retention. Price the average and peak capacity separately when the service bills both provisioned capacity and operations.
Then add orchestration and operations: managed Kubernetes or batch control planes, scheduler fees, registry storage, logging, monitoring, load balancers, NAT gateways, and public IP addresses. A short-lived training job can still incur a full month of a control-plane or reserved endpoint charge.
4. Split transfer into identifiable lines
Measure bytes by source, destination, region pair, and direction. Keep at least these lines separate:
- Dataset ingress into the GPU region.
- Inter-region replication and checkpoint copies.
- Traffic between zones or regions inside the provider.
- Internet egress to customers, researchers, or another cloud.
- Downloads from object storage or a serving endpoint.
Inbound transfer may be free while responses and outbound traffic are chargeable. AWS documents no charge for internet-to-AWS transfer in its data-transfer guidance, but that does not make the return path free. Apply each provider’s free allowance before the paid tiers, and preserve the unit used by the tariff: decimal GB and binary GiB are not interchangeable.

Subtract only discounts that the workload actually earns. Keep promotional credits separate from a sustainable operating cost, and show tax as a separate line if your organization needs a cash forecast. A negotiated rate that applies to compute may not reduce network, storage, or third-party platform charges.
Make egress a first-class cost
Egress becomes material when a training run exports checkpoints, a dataset is replicated across regions, or an inference service returns large files. Calculate billable volume as:
Billable egress = metered output − applicable free allowance.

Illustrative AWS tier calculation
The cited EC2 schedule provides 100 GB per month of free internet data transfer out, then $0.09/GB for the first 10 TB, $0.085/GB for the next 40 TB, $0.07/GB for the next 100 TB, and $0.05/GB above 150 TB. Those are the published example tiers accessed in 2026; verify the current regional tariff and whether another service’s transfer meter applies to your path.
Illustrative Google Cloud Premium Tier calculation
The cited Premium Tier table lists North America internet egress at $0.12/GiB for 1–1,024 GiB, $0.11/GiB for 1,024–10,240 GiB, and $0.08/GiB above 10,240 GiB, after the first free GiB. These rates are in GiB, not decimal GB, and apply to the stated destination and tier. A different region, network tier, product, or destination can produce a different schedule.
GB versus GiB
One decimal GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes; one binary GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes. Convert your telemetry to the tariff’s unit before multiplying. A “12 TB” dashboard export may represent 12,000 GB, 12,000 GiB, or a rounded figure; use the provider’s byte count whenever possible.
Model committed-use fees and break-even utilization
A commitment changes the shape of the bill, not the need to measure usage. Google Cloud states: “You’re billed monthly for your commitment and must pay your monthly commitment fee even if you don’t use all of your committed resources.” Model the fixed fee across the whole term and separately model the usage it covers.
Separate covered usage from overage
For each month, calculate:
- Fixed commitment fee: the contractual monthly payment, whether or not capacity is consumed.
- Covered usage: the GPU and host consumption that the commitment offsets.
- On-demand overage: additional GPUs or hours beyond the committed amount.
- Non-covered services: storage, transfer, orchestration, and any resource class excluded from the contract.
Never multiply a discounted hourly rate by 100% utilization unless the workload really sustains that utilization. Include idle committed hours in the denominator only when you are reporting provisioned capacity; exclude them from useful GPU-hours.
Compute the break-even point
At a given workload, compare the commitment’s fixed fee plus expected overage with the on-demand spend for the same GPU-hours, host-hours, and region:
Commitment is cheaper when fixed commitment fee + expected overage + unchanged ancillary costs < on-demand compute cost + unchanged ancillary costs.
To express this as utilization, estimate the monthly useful hours at which the two sides are equal, then divide by the maximum committed GPU-hours. Test several utilization levels because a seasonal workload can be profitable at 80% utilization and more expensive than on-demand at 30%.

How large can the discount be?
Google Cloud’s current documentation says GPU committed-use discounts can reach up to 55% for most GPU types and up to 65% for some GPU types. “Up to” is not a guaranteed rate for every model, region, or term; use the rate offered for your exact commitment in the calculation.
Compare on-demand, spot, and committed scenarios
| Scenario | Compute treatment | Best fit | Main risk to include |
|---|---|---|---|
| On-demand | GPU and host hours at the published regional rate; no long-term obligation | Variable demand, prototypes, and workloads that cannot tolerate a contract | Highest unit price and idle instances left running |
| Spot or preemptible | Lower, variable compute rate when spare capacity is available | Checkpointed training, batch inference, and interruption-tolerant jobs | Interruption, capacity unavailability, restart time, and possible output duplication |
| Committed use | Fixed monthly fee for the term, covered usage, and on-demand overage | Predictable baseline demand that can use the commitment consistently | Paying for unused capacity and losing flexibility if the model or region changes |
For spot, add the expected cost of interruptions: lost GPU-hours, checkpoint storage and transfer, queue delays, and any extra orchestration. A low spot rate is not a saving if repeated restarts erase the discount.
Worked symbolic example: eight GPUs and 12 TiB of output
Assume eight GPUs, 720 hours in a month, 65% useful utilization, a GPU price of P per GPU-hour, a host price of H per host-hour, 12 TiB of internet egress, an egress rate of E in the provider’s billing unit, and a monthly commitment fee C.
- GPU compute: 8 × 720 × P.
- Host compute: 720 × H when the eight GPUs share one host; use the actual host count if they do not.
- Egress volume: 12 × 1,024 GiB, less the applicable free allowance, converted if the tariff uses decimal GB.
- Egress charge: the resulting billable volume multiplied by each applicable tier of E.
- All-in monthly cost: GPU compute + host compute + egress + C + storage and platform charges − discounts and credits.
- Useful GPU-hours: 8 × 720 × 0.65 = 3,744 useful GPU-hours.
- Effective rate: all-in monthly cost ÷ 3,744.
Replace P, H, E, and C with the selected provider, region, term, and account-specific values. Run the same worksheet with C set to zero for on-demand and with an interruption-adjusted compute rate for spot.
Use a consistent comparison across AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure
Do not compare a GPU catalog number from one provider with a bundled machine price from another. For each candidate, normalize the following:
| Comparison axis | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Effective price | What is the all-in cost per useful GPU-hour after host, storage, platform, transfer, discounts, and idle time? |
| Hardware fit | Does the GPU memory, interconnect, CPU, RAM, and local storage meet the workload’s requirement? |
| Region | Where is the data, and what regional, zonal, and cross-cloud transfer charges apply? |
| Egress path | How many GB or GiB leave the region, to which destination, and under which tier? |
| Commitment flexibility | What term and resource scope are fixed, and what happens when demand falls? |
| Interruption tolerance | Can jobs checkpoint and resume if spot capacity is reclaimed? |
| Ancillary services | Which disks, object stores, schedulers, networks, logs, and endpoints are required? |
Use each provider’s current calculator for a first estimate, then reconcile it with a small test invoice or billing export. Calculators do not know your actual utilization, data movement, retries, or commitment coverage unless you enter them correctly.

Report three quantities separately: provisioned GPU-hours, available GPU-hours, and useful GPU-hours. For example, a capacity pool can be provisioned for 5,760 GPU-hours, be available for 5,500 after maintenance and interruptions, and deliver only 3,744 useful GPU-hours after queueing and underloaded jobs. The denominator chosen determines the story the metric tells.
- Provisioned-cost rate: all-in cost divided by provisioned GPU-hours; useful for capacity planning.
- Available-cost rate: all-in cost divided by hours when the service could accept work; useful for reliability analysis.
- Useful-work rate: all-in cost divided by completed useful GPU-hours; useful for unit economics.
Track utilization by job or workload class. Averaging a busy training queue with an idle development cluster can conceal the commitment’s true break-even point.

Using one blended egress rate
Symptom: the model ignores free allowances and tier boundaries. Fix: split traffic by path, subtract the allowance, and calculate each tier in GB or GiB as billed.
Treating a commitment as a discounted hourly rate
Symptom: a low utilization month appears profitable. Fix: enter the full monthly fee first, then offset only the covered usage and add overage.
Counting all provisioned time as useful
Symptom: effective GPU-hour cost looks suspiciously low. Fix: multiply by measured utilization and an availability factor, and expose idle hours.
