The real cost of a Hyundai electric car is its complete cost over the period you keep it—not the ex-showroom price and not merely the home-charging bill. Add the on-road purchase price, loan interest, electricity, public-charging fees, insurance, maintenance, tyres, charger installation and taxes; then subtract eligible incentives and the car’s resale or buyback value.
For a Hyundai CRETA Electric, calculate the battery-as-a-service (BaaS) version separately. Hyundai announced a starting BaaS vehicle price of ₹10.99 lakh ex-showroom and a battery-use charge from ₹3.9 per kilometre. A full-battery purchase has a higher vehicle invoice but no per-kilometre battery fee. Your annual distance, local tariff, state taxes, finance rate and ownership period determine which is cheaper.
The total-cost formula

This follows the total-cost-of-ownership approach described by NITI Aayog, which treats vehicle cost, energy, subsidies, maintenance, road tax and registration, insurance, financing, resale value and battery-pack resale value as separate drivers. Calculate both the total rupee cost and the cost per kilometre:
Cost per kilometre = (all ownership costs − incentives − resale value) ÷ total kilometres driven.
For long ownership periods, also calculate a discounted cash-flow result. A rupee paid in year eight is not financially equivalent to a rupee paid on delivery, so discount future energy, service and resale cash flows using the rate you normally use for major household purchases.

Start with the exact on-road price
Identify the vehicle and location
Record the Hyundai model, battery configuration, trim, optional equipment and state in which it will be registered. The same electric car can have a different on-road cost because registration treatment, road tax, insurance and local incentives vary by state. Request an itemised quotation rather than relying on a headline ex-showroom figure.
Include every delivery-day charge
- Ex-showroom vehicle price, or the lower BaaS vehicle price if you are not buying the battery outright.
- Registration and road tax, including any state EV exemption or concession that is actually available on your purchase date.
- Comprehensive insurance and any add-ons.
- Dealer handling or documentation charges, accessories and mandatory-looking items that you choose to accept.
- Home charger, cabling, earthing work, mounting and electrical-load upgrades.
- Financing fees, loan processing charges and the interest schedule.
Keep a cash case and a financed case. The cash case shows the economic cost without borrowing; the financed case shows what your bank account will actually pay.
Calculate electricity correctly
Use real efficiency, not the battery size
Electricity cost is based on energy drawn from the grid. Start with the car’s observed efficiency in kilometres per kilowatt-hour (km/kWh), preferably measured over your own routes and climate. Then calculate:
Annual grid energy = annual kilometres ÷ km/kWh × (1 + charging-loss allowance).

Charging losses cover heat, conversion and standby consumption between the wall socket and the battery. Use a measured value if you have one; otherwise model a conservative allowance and show it as an assumption. A dashboard efficiency figure can understate wall-socket energy because it may not include all charging losses.
Apply your distribution-company tariff
The Bureau of Energy Efficiency describes the basic relationship as battery energy in kWh multiplied by the electricity tariff per kWh. Enter the tariff on your own bill, including slab rates or time-of-use pricing. Do not use a national average when the purchase decision is state-specific. If your tariff changes by consumption slab, calculate the marginal rate caused by the car rather than the average rate for the entire home.
Add public charging as a separate line
Public charging can cost more than home charging and may include a session fee, parking charge, minimum billing, taxes or an idle fee after the vehicle is full. Estimate the share of kilometres charged away from home and apply the actual network’s tariff to those sessions. Keep public energy and public access fees separate so a change in charging behaviour does not distort the home-energy estimate.
Worked electricity example
The following is an illustration, not a market quote. Assume 12,000 km per year, measured consumption of 6 km/kWh, a 10% charging-loss allowance and a home tariff of ₹8/kWh:

- Grid energy after losses: 2,000 × 1.10 = 2,200 kWh.
- Annual home-charging cost: 2,200 × ₹8 = ₹17,600.
If 20% of the distance is charged publicly at ₹14/kWh and the public operator adds ₹100 in fees per session, calculate that usage separately and add the session fees. Replace every illustrative assumption with your tariff, efficiency and charging pattern.
CRETA Electric BaaS versus buying the full battery
BaaS separates the battery price from the vehicle invoice. Hyundai’s announced CRETA Electric BaaS entry price is ₹10.99 lakh ex-showroom, with battery usage fees starting at ₹3.9 per kilometre. Hyundai’s explainer illustrates ₹3,900 per month at 1,000 km per month and contrasts a ₹18.03 lakh traditional entry price with the BaaS entry price. Hyundai’s product information says separating the battery reduces upfront cost by around ₹7 lakh. These are published starting or illustrative figures, not a final on-road quotation for every trim or state.
| Cost line | Full-battery purchase | CRETA Electric BaaS |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle invoice | Use the full-battery on-road quotation for the chosen trim. | Use the BaaS vehicle quotation; Hyundai announced ₹10.99 lakh ex-showroom as a starting price. |
| Battery payment | No separate per-kilometre battery fee; the battery is part of the vehicle purchase. | Annual kilometres × ₹3.9 as the starting published usage rate. At 12,000 km, this arithmetic is ₹46,800 per year before electricity; it is a derived calculation, not a quoted annual Hyundai price. |
| Financing | Finance the full vehicle invoice and calculate actual interest. | Finance the lower vehicle invoice, then add the BaaS fee from driving. |
| Electricity | Use wall-socket kWh × your home and public tariffs. | Use the same charging calculation; BaaS does not remove electricity cost. |
| Insurance, maintenance and tyres | Use the same categories and trim-specific quotation. | Use the same categories; confirm how the policy treats a leased or service-based battery. |
| Resale or buyback | Estimate ordinary-market resale and, if offered, any Hyundai programme separately. | Check the BaaS contract’s transfer, termination and resale conditions before assigning a residual value. |
Test the usage break-even
Because the published ₹3.9/km is usage-based, low-mileage drivers pay less in BaaS fees but recover the lower upfront price more slowly. A simple, non-discounted illustration uses the approximately ₹7 lakh upfront difference cited by Hyundai and ignores finance, taxes and contract changes:

What the warranty does and does not cover
Hyundai’s warranty table lists a CRETA Electric vehicle warranty of three years with unlimited kilometres. Hyundai also states that normal maintenance and wear items are excluded. The battery warranty is listed as eight years or 160,000 km. A warranty reduces the probability of a large covered defect bill; it does not make routine servicing free and does not eliminate insurance or accident risk.
Build an annual reserve
- Scheduled inspections and replacement parts specified in the service schedule.
- Tyres, puncture repairs, wheel alignment and balancing.
- Brake servicing, even though regenerative braking can reduce friction-brake wear.
- Cabin filters, wipers, washer fluid and other consumables.
- Software, connectivity or subscription charges if the selected service requires them.
- An emergency repair reserve for items outside warranty, accident deductibles and electrical accessories.
Do not insert a made-up battery replacement price into the base case. Model battery replacement outside warranty as a separate high-cost sensitivity, with the amount clearly marked as an assumption. The warranty period is a risk boundary, not a guarantee that every battery issue is covered; check exclusions, diagnostic requirements and transfer terms.
Insurance, finance and home charging equipment
Insurance
Obtain a comprehensive quote for the exact variant and registration location. Compare the premium, voluntary deductible, zero-depreciation availability, roadside assistance and treatment of the traction battery, charging cable, wall box and water or accident damage. An EV-specific add-on can be valuable only if its covered events and limits match your use.
Financing
Record the amount financed, interest rate, tenure, processing fee, down payment and any balloon or residual payment. Sum the scheduled interest rather than multiplying the principal by the advertised rate. For BaaS, confirm whether the battery service fee is included in the lender’s financed amount or paid separately each month. A lower initial EMI can still produce a higher lifetime cost if the term is longer.
Wall-box installation
Hyundai says CRETA Electric HC variants include a 7.4 kW wall-box charger. Verify that the quoted variant actually includes the unit and identify what installation covers. Budget for a suitable connector, dedicated circuit, earthing, protection devices, cable length, civil work, parking access and any sanctioned-load upgrade. Installation conditions can make a nominally included charger an additional expense.
Before purchase, have an electrician confirm the building’s wiring, meter capacity and permission requirements. Do not connect a high-power charger to an unsuitable domestic socket or assume that a housing society will permit a cable route without approval.

Taxes, incentives and geography
Subtract an incentive only after checking the buyer, vehicle category, invoice date, registration state and scheme window. NITI Aayog notes that state subsidies differ. PM E-DRIVE government material describes a ₹10,900 crore scheme outlay and charging-station deployment, but its incentive table is category- and period-specific; a national headline does not establish that a particular CRETA Electric purchase qualifies.
Verify road-tax and registration treatment with the state transport authority or dealer, and retain the written eligibility calculation. Electricity tariffs, public-charging rates, insurance premiums and registration taxes can change the answer more than a small difference in efficiency.
Resale value and Hyundai’s assured buyback
Choose an ownership horizon—three, five, eight or another number of years—and estimate the resale value at that date. Use an ordinary-market estimate based on comparable age, mileage, condition and battery-health evidence. Treat Hyundai’s announced assured buyback of 60% through three years or 45,000 km as a separate scenario with its eligibility and mileage limits; it is not a universal resale value. Confirm whether the percentage applies to a defined invoice amount, which deductions apply and whether BaaS changes eligibility.
For a financed purchase, subtract the expected resale proceeds from ownership cost, but also show the loan balance at the sale date. A car can have a strong resale value and still require cash to settle an outstanding loan if the balance exceeds the sale proceeds.
A year-by-year calculation template
Create one row for each ownership year and one column for each cash-flow category:
| Year | Loan interest | Home electricity | Public charging | BaaS fee, if applicable | Service, tyres and reserve | Insurance | Other costs | Net cash flow |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 (purchase) | Interest due in the period | — | — | — | Pre-delivery items if any | First policy | On-road price, charger and taxes | Acquisition total |
| 1 to final year | Actual scheduled interest | Annual km ÷ km/kWh × tariff × loss factor | Sessions, energy and access fees | Annual km × applicable rate | Service, tyres and repair reserve | Renewal premium | Load upgrades or subscriptions | Annual total |
| Sale year | Remaining settlement, if any | Through sale date | Through sale date | Through sale date | Through sale date | Through sale date | Sale transaction costs | Annual total minus resale or buyback |
Sum the rows for undiscounted TCO, divide by total kilometres for the lifetime rupees-per-kilometre figure, and then repeat with discounted values for a present-value comparison. Keep incentives in the year they are actually received rather than spreading them across later years.
Compare the EV with petrol or diesel on equal terms
A fair comparison uses the same ownership period, annual kilometres, financing method and resale convention. Build a second worksheet for a comparable petrol or diesel Hyundai or another vehicle you are considering.

| Comparison axis | What to enter for each vehicle |
|---|---|
| Upfront cost | On-road price, registration, taxes, accessories and charger only where relevant. |
| Energy | EV wall-socket kWh and public fees; petrol or diesel litres based on real fuel economy and your local fuel price. |
| Finance | Principal, rate, tenure, fees and remaining balance at sale. |
| Maintenance | Scheduled service, tyres, alignment, consumables and repair reserve. |
| Insurance | Comprehensive premium, deductibles and relevant add-ons. |
| Access and convenience | Home-charging availability, public charging, fuel-station access and time spent charging or refuelling. |
| Incentives and tax | Only verified state or central benefits for the exact buyer, vehicle and date. |
| Residual value | Comparable resale estimate, or an eligible assured-buyback scenario shown separately. |
Do not claim that an EV is automatically cheaper. A driver with inexpensive home electricity, high annual mileage and a long ownership period may benefit strongly from lower energy and service costs. A low-mileage driver without reliable home charging may value convenience more than a theoretical energy saving, while BaaS adds a per-kilometre charge that must be included.
Charging access and daily practicality
Hyundai says the myHyundai app can discover, navigate to and access more than 30,000 charging points across India. Treat that as network discovery coverage, not a guarantee that every point is available, compatible, operational or convenient at the moment you need it. Check connector type, charging power, payment method, opening hours and parking rules for your regular routes.
For a home-focused owner, the 7.4 kW wall box on eligible HC variants can make overnight charging practical, subject to electrical capacity and installation. For apartment residents, obtain written permission and confirm where the meter, charger and cable will be located before treating home charging as available in your TCO model.
Sensitivity tests that prevent misleading conclusions
Run the calculation again after changing one assumption at a time:
- Annual distance: 5,000, 10,000, 15,000 and 20,000 km.
- Home versus public charging share.
- Real efficiency in summer, winter, traffic and highway use.
- Electricity tariff and possible slab or time-of-use changes.
- Fuel price and real fuel economy for the petrol or diesel alternative.
- Insurance renewal increases.
- Tyre replacement timing and repair reserve.
- Loan rate, tenure and resale date.
- BaaS rate, contract minimums and early-exit conditions.
- Battery replacement outside warranty as a clearly labelled tail-risk case.
If the preferred option changes when one plausible assumption moves slightly, report the decision as usage-dependent rather than presenting a single precise winner.
Common calculation mistakes
- Using ex-showroom price as the purchase cost: add registration, insurance, accessories, dealer charges and charger work.
- Counting only dashboard energy: include wall-to-battery losses and public-network fees.
- Assuming zero maintenance: budget inspections, tyres, brakes, filters, wipers and repairs.
- Ignoring finance: show total interest and the outstanding balance at resale.
- Applying an incentive automatically: verify state, category, date and eligibility.
- Treating buyback as guaranteed resale: model Hyundai’s 60% through three years or 45,000 km only when the programme terms are met.
- Comparing different distances: use the same annual kilometres for the EV and ICE worksheets.
- Forgetting access: include the cost and time of public charging when home charging is unavailable.
What the calculation should tell you
Your final worksheet should show four outputs: total undiscounted rupees, discounted present-value rupees, rupees per kilometre and the annual cash requirement. Keep a base case and clearly labelled optimistic and conservative cases. The biggest drivers for a Hyundai electric car in India are usually the exact on-road price, annual distance, home-charging tariff and access, BaaS usage fee if selected, financing, state taxes and the resale assumption.
Hyundai Motor India MD and CEO Tarun Garg described the market’s next phase this way: “The next phase of electric vehicle adoption in India will be driven equally by advancements in vehicle technology and by greater customer confidence.” Confidence in the ownership decision comes from making every cost visible, testing the assumptions and verifying the contract, warranty and state rules before signing.
