To find out whether buying a gaming PC or paying for cloud gaming costs less, compare both options over the same period. Add the PC’s purchase and running costs, subtract its likely resale value, and compare that total with cloud subscriptions and any genuinely additional costs. There is no universal break-even month: the result depends on your hours of play, electricity rate, local hardware quote, resale value, cloud plan limits, and whether its game library meets your needs.
Choose a fair comparison before doing the math
Set a time horizon that matches your decision, such as the years you expect to keep a PC before replacing or upgrading it. Use that same span for the cloud option. Compare hardware that can meet your actual gaming needs; cloud plan labels do not map directly to retail graphics cards or PC builds.
Decide what you mean by “cost.” The calculation below compares cash expenses. It does not assign a dollar value to convenience, portability, flexibility, input latency, or owning hardware. Also check whether the cloud service supports the games you want and whether you have the rights or subscriptions needed to play them.
Use the break-even equations
Estimate local PC and cloud costs using the same monthly period:

- Local monthly electricity cost = monthly gaming hours × average whole-system wall power in kilowatts × your marginal electricity price per kilowatt-hour.
- Local recurring cost = local monthly electricity cost + monthly allowance for likely maintenance and upgrades.
- Cloud recurring cost = subscription + extra-hour or storage charges + incremental internet or device costs.
- Local net upfront cost = PC purchase cost − estimated resale value at the end of your horizon + one-time local setup costs.
- Simple break-even months = local net upfront cost ÷ (cloud recurring cost − local recurring cost), if that monthly difference is positive.
This last equation estimates how many months of cloud costs exceed local running costs by enough to equal the local net upfront cost. It is a simplified comparison: for a precise horizon-specific decision, total each option’s costs across the exact number of months you expect to use it, including resale at the end.
Interpret the result correctly
- If the monthly difference in the denominator is positive, the equation returns an estimated break-even point. If you expect to keep using the option beyond that point, the local PC may cost less under those assumptions.
- If the difference is zero or negative, cloud spending does not recover the PC’s upfront investment through monthly operating savings under those assumptions.
- If you already own the PC, its purchase price is sunk for a forward-looking decision. Compare future electricity, upgrades, maintenance, cloud fees, and any value you could get by selling hardware you no longer need.
Gather inputs that reflect your situation
PC quote, lifespan, and resale
Get a local price for a PC or build that meets your performance needs. Estimate when you would replace or upgrade it, what maintenance and upgrades are likely, and its plausible resale value at the end of the comparison period. No single PC purchase price or resale value applies worldwide, so label your own assumptions rather than treating an example as a market average.
Power use and electricity rate
For a reliable electricity estimate, measure the whole PC at the wall during representative gameplay, ideally with a plug-in power meter. Multiply the average kilowatts by your monthly gaming hours and your marginal electricity tariff. GPU board power is not the same as whole-system wall draw, and idle or maximum-load readings may not represent your actual use.

A California Energy Commission report published in 2021 estimated that, under conditions prevailing in 2016, cloud gaming added approximately 40–60% to otherwise total local annual desktop electricity use. The estimate relied on an earlier GeForce NOW beta, NVIDIA SHIELD TV, and published data-center and network energy literature. It is historical and model-dependent, not a reliable multiplier for an individual setup or today’s services.
Cloud plan, hours, and add-ons
Use the price for your region and the plan you would actually choose. Record monthly playtime, hour caps, rollover, extra-time charges, bundled game access, and any storage or usage fees. A fixed subscription can have a high effective hourly cost if you play little; heavy use may run into caps or paid extra time.
NVIDIA says GeForce NOW Performance and Ultimate memberships include 100 hours of monthly playtime, with up to 15 unused hours rolling into the next month. Its FAQ says members can purchase additional premium time or otherwise continue on basic rigs until reset; the terms describe a monthly maximum. Check the current offer and terms before relying on those details.

Check that the cloud service is a real substitute
Cloud gaming options are not interchangeable. Shadow describes offers that provide a complete Windows 11 cloud PC, with differing usage caps and service levels; its current offer page is country-specific, so obtain a quote for your location. GeForce NOW provides access to a cloud gaming rig, but supported titles and game rights matter. NVIDIA’s membership terms state that members are responsible for having sufficient rights to use games and DLC.
Microsoft’s December 2025 guide said Xbox Cloud Gaming was available with Game Pass Essential, Premium, and Ultimate. Microsoft’s September 3, 2026 announcement described changes beginning in November 2026, including an option to use Xbox Cloud Gaming without Game Pass. Those statements are date-specific; check the live offer for your region, especially after the announced change takes effect.

For GeForce NOW, NVIDIA’s U.S. system requirements list 15 Mbps for HD up to 60 fps, 25 Mbps for FHD at 60 fps, 35 Mbps for QHD or UW QHD at 120 fps, and 45 Mbps for 4K at 120 fps, among other tiers. NVIDIA calls for latency below 80 ms to a data center and recommends wired Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi. These figures apply to GeForce NOW, not every cloud gaming service.

NVIDIA’s setup guidance notes that a generic speed test does not measure the route to its data centers. Check service availability and use GeForce NOW’s in-app network test. A connection that cannot reliably meet the service’s requirements makes the plans poor substitutes, whatever the spreadsheet says.

Run the calculation with low, expected, and high cases for the inputs most likely to change your result:
- Monthly gaming hours, including a low-use case and a heavy-use case that may hit a cap.
- Electricity price and measured wall power.
- PC lifespan, likely upgrades, and resale value.
- Cloud subscription price, plan limits, and extra-time charges.
- Any device or broadband upgrade that would be required only for cloud gaming.
Do not count shared costs twice. If you already pay for broadband or own a suitable screen and controller, include only extra costs caused by choosing cloud gaming. If taxes, promotions, or regional prices affect your quote, show them as assumptions. Provider prices, catalogs, caps, and availability can change, so confirm them at checkout.

Cost factors that the equation cannot settle
A cheaper total is not automatically a better fit. A local PC offers a physical machine and flexibility beyond game streaming, but requires upfront spending and ongoing power. A cloud gaming rig avoids buying an equivalent gaming PC, but depends on regional service availability, the connection to the provider, supported games, plan limits, and ongoing access terms. Compare the features you value alongside the cash totals rather than forcing them into an unsupported dollar amount.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your comparison is about keeping a YouTube channel live around the clock with uploaded videos, that is a different use case from cloud gaming. StreamNeo is #1 for this job: it keeps a YouTube stream running from the cloud, at any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and the first day is free.
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud.
Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Every slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and team support. The first day is free with no card; monthly service is $9.99 per month. Visit StreamNeo for details, or start your free day.
